They were if you like, the password in times of persecution. Christian symbols can be seen carved upon the graves and walls of the early Christian catacombs in Rome, especially St Priscilla, Domitilla, and Calixtus.

It was a hard word given him to preach: King Jeroboam would “die by the sword,” and Israel would “go into exile away from his land” (Amos 7:10–11). For this word, Amos was hated and threatened. St. John the Bap- tist also suffered for his faithful preaching of repentance. King Herod “sent and seized John and bound him in prison,” even though he knew that John “was a righteous and holy man” (Mark 6:17, 20). Out of pride and fear, Herod “sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head” (Mark 6:27). Yet in Christ, St. John the Baptist “has been raised from the dead” (Mark 6:14, 16). For Christ is the destruction of death itself “before the foundation of the world,” and even now by faith, “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” has blessed us in Christ “with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Eph. 1:3–4).     The Rite of Second Marriage CONCERNING SECOND, THIRD AND FOURTH MARRIAGES Second Marriage • A second marriage is an extension of the Church’s mercy due to human failings and frailty and is permitted only in certain circumstances. • If one (or both) of the parties has been once married and then divorced (rather than widowed), permission from the Metropolitan Archbishop must be petitioned and received in order for the marriage to take place. This petition will be filed by the Priest in accordance with the policies and procedures specified in the Archdiocesan Priest’s Guide. • If both parties have been once previously married and then either widowed or divorced, the Rite of Second Marriage will be used. If the Orthodox party has been once previously married and then widowed or divorced but the non-Orthodox party has not been previously married, the Rite of Second Marriage will be used. If the Orthodox party has not been married but the non-Orthodox party has been once previously married and then widowed or divorced, the usual Rite of Marriage may be used. • The bishop does not serve at the Rite of Second Marriage. Traditionally the clergy do not attend the wedding dinner or reception. • Only one priest serves at the Rite of Second Marriage, and that without a deacon. • If it is the second marriage of the bride, her gown may not be white or elaborate nor does her father give her away. • If it is the second marriage of the bride, there is no bridal procession but the wedding party is simply led by the priest from the narthex to the table on the solea.

During the school year, our Adult Education programs are at 8:45, Sunday School for K-5 begins at 9:45 with children returning at the peace, and Middle and High School groups meet at 9:00. Child care is available for children four years old and under from 9:30-11:30 all year long. As is our custom, all baptized Christians are most welcome to receive communion.     The Diocese of Wichita and Mid-America Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America Procedures to be Followed upon the Death of a Clergyman [1] 1. Upon the death of a priest or deacon, the Diocesan Bishop must be informed immediately so that the brother clergy may be notified and the appropriate funeral rites arranged. The Diocesan Bishop will then inform the Metropolitan Archbishop in Englewood, NJ, the members of the Diocesan Council of Presbyters and Clergy Brotherhood. With the blessing of the Diocesan Bishop, local Orthodox Christian clergy of all other jurisdictions ought also to be notified. 2. After the nearest priest is called in and says the Trisagion Prayers of Mercy for the Departed at the place of death, the departed may be removed to the mortuary where the mortician prepares and clothes the departed as far as his undergarments. No cosmetics should be used on the departed unless absolutely necessary. 3. Upon arriving at the mortuary all of the clergy appointed to vest the departed will themselves vest - PRIESTS vest in cassocks, exorassa and epitrachelia, and DEACONS vests in cassocks, exorassa and oraria. After the priests lightly wipe the body with a sponge soaked in oil, the clergy clothe him in his clerical attire (shirt, trousers, socks, shoes and cassock). The Vesting Prayers are slowly intoned as the clergy, assisted by the mortician as necessary, vest the departed in full sacerdotal vestments: IF THE DEPARTED IS A BISHOP the deacons cense him, as usual, while he is vested with sticharion, epitrachelion, zone, epimanikia, epigonation, sakkos, great omophorion, pectoral cross, engolpion and miter.
