Opening Keynote Speaker Merelle Rodrigo GREAT TEAMS PRODUCE OUTSTANDING WORK Increasingly the responsibilities of Administrative Professionals have expanded to such a great extent that no longer is the role solely comprised of reporting to one single person. Today, it is not uncommon for Administrative Professionals to have reporting relationships with many people, some of which are lateral as opposed to vertical. Skilled Administrative Professionals will often find themselves in the role of managing projects, managing people and working in a structured group environment in order to accomplish tasks. Understanding team dynamics, the optimal ways in which teams function, and the best methods to increase team engagement and efficiency is therefore an important key to enhancing positive outcomes. In her presentation on Organizational Team Dynamics, Merelle will discuss ways to: • Create a cohesive and productive team structure; • Manage and resolve conflicts at work using ten strategies for everyone on the team; • Divide or Conquer: How great teams turn conflict into strength; • Motivate and inspire members of the team who have lost their enthusiasm and engagement; • Stop Workplace Drama: Train your team to have no excuses, no complaints, and no regrets; • Discourage gossip and other forms of toxic behaviour that detract from team accomplishments. Lauderdale, The Bahamas All aboard for the sweet life with Princess Cruises’ new cocoa temptations. Regal Princess Hurricane season aside, the balmy Caribbean is always enticing, especially during the throes of a chilly USA winter. But Princess Cruises really knocked my thermal socks off when I boarded their newest ship, the huge 3,600passenger Regal Princess, to embark on the maiden voyage of the dramatically expanded “Chocolate Journeys” program. Yep, it’s all about chocolate, 24/7, and it’s the most expansive gourmet desserts program on the ocean. Impressively, the endeavor is spearheaded by one of the world’s top master chocolatiers, Norman Love, the former Godiva specialty chocolatier whose Norman Love Confections team now produces 55,000 handpainted, gourmet chocolate candies on a daily basis. (Love on the Love Boat. It’s a match made in sweet heaven.) To celebrate Princess Cruise’s 50th anniversary, Norman Love worked with the cruise line to create a new onboard experience that includes premium chocolate offerings for desserts, cocktails, candy making demos, chocolate/wine tastings, turndown service pillow treats, and even spa treatments at the ship’s Lotus Spa. By the end of 2016, it’ll be available throughout the 18ship fleet. http://www.holidaygoddess.guide/destinations/bahamastheloveboatsailstochocolateparadise/ 1/5 2/12/2016 BAHAMAS: The Love Boat’s New Chocolate Voyage : Holiday Goddess, Travel for Less Master Chocolatier Norman Love.

  • Sexuality in the Horror Soundtrack (1968-1981)
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Monstrous Resonance: Sexuality in the Horror Soundtrack (1968-1981) A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology by Morgan Fifield Woolsey 2018 © Copyright by Morgan Fifield Woolsey 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Monstrous Resonance: Sexuality in the Horror Soundtrack (1968-1981) by Morgan Fifield Woolsey Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Raymond L. Knapp, Co-Chair Professor Mitchell Bryan Morris, Co-Chair In this dissertation I argue for the importance of the film soundtrack as affective archive through a consideration of the horror soundtrack. Long dismissed by scholars in both cinema media studies and musicology as one of horror’s many manipulative special effects employed in the aesthetically and ideologically uncomplicated goal of arousing fear, the horror soundtrack is in fact an invaluable resource for scholars seeking to historicize changes in cultural sensibilities and public feelings about sexuality. I explore the critical potential of the horror soundtrack as affective archive through formal and theoretical analysis of the role of music in the representation of sexuality in the horror film. I focus on films consumed in the Unites States during the 1970s, a decade marked by rapid shifts in both cultural understanding and cinematic representation of sexuality. ii My analyses proceed from an interdisciplinary theoretical framework animated by methods drawn from affect studies, American studies, feminist film theory, film music studies, queer of color critique, and queer theory. What is the relationship between public discourses of fear around gender, race, class, and sexuality, and the musical framing of sexuality as fearful in the horror film? I explore this central question through the examination of significant figures in the genre (the vampire, the mad scientist/creation dyad, and the slasher or serial killer) and the musical-affective economies in which they circulate.
