KLEMENS SANDER, BASS-BARITONE Austrian baritone Klemens Sander made his operatic début in 2001 at the Volksoper Wien THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. A regular guest at the Theater an der Wien, he has performed Handel’s GIULIO CESARE under René Jacobs, Poulenc’s DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES under Bertrand de Billy, Strauss’ INTERMEZZO under Kirill Petrenko and Britten’s DEATH IN VENICE under Donald Runnicles. Further operatic engagements include Papageno DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE for Grand Theatre Luxembourg under Christopher Moulds, DIE GEZEICHNETEN under Kent Nagano for the Salzburg Festival, both the title-role in Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI and Escamillo in Bizet’s CARMEN for the Klosterneuburg Opera Festival, Seikyo in Tan Dun’s TEA at both Teatro Carlo Felice Genova and Neue Oper Wien, and Conte Almaviva LE NOZZE DI FIGARO for the National Opera Vilnius. Klemens Sander made his Wigmore Hall recital début in 2005 with Charles Spencer after winning the “Richard Tauber Prize for singers”. Furthermore, after being awarded the Lied Prize at the International Competition in S’Hertogenbosch, he has established himself a prominent recitalist performing for BBC Cardiff, Salzburg Easter Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival and at venues including Schubertsaal (Wiener Konzerthaus), Gläserner Saal (Wiener Musikverein) and with Justus Zeyen at both Mozarteum (Salzburg) and Centre des Arts Pluriel (Luxemburg). Recent concert highlights include Mozart’s C-minor Mass under the baton of Jeremie Rhorer (Salzburg Festival), Handel’s MESSIAH, JUDAS MACCABÄUS and Bach’s ST MATTHEW PASSION (Wiener Konzerthaus), Fauré’s REQUIEM under Georges Prêtre at both the Berliner Philharmonie and for MDR Leipzig at the Gewandhaus Leipzig, Beethoven’s MISSA SOLEMNIS (Wiener Musikverein), Bach’s ST JOHN PASSION under Kwamé Ryan with Orchestre National de L’Aquitaine Bordeaux, Brahms’ EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM with Concerto Köln (Hamburg Laeiszhalle), Martin’s GOLGATHA (Stefaniensaal Graz) and Orff´s CARMINA BURANA in Tokyo, Taipei and Madrid. He has also performed under Helmuth Rilling, Franz Welser-Möst, Leopold Hager, Martin Haselböck, Christian Arming and Andreas Spering. Forthcoming engagements include Weill’s THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS under H.K. Gruber, Bach’s CHRISTMAS ORATORIO and a recording of Schubert’s A-FLAT MAJOR MASS under Andrés Orozco-Estrada with Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich, and an Italian tour of Bach’s ST. JOHN PASSION with Salzburger Bachchor. Klemens Sander studied at the University of Music and Applied Arts Vienna with Helena Lazarska, Robert Holl and David Lutz. Additionally, he has taken part in masterclasses with Thomas Hampson, Gundula Janowitz, Dagmar Pecková and Hartmut Höll.
