Birla Planetarium, Kolkata, India E-mail: [email protected] (Received November 30, 2014; Reviced May 31, 2015; Aaccepted June 30, 2015) ABSTRACT In modern Astronomy the vernal equinoctial (VE) point is taken as the starting point for measuring celestial longitudes. Due to the precession of equinoxes, the above point is receding back along the ecliptic. As a result, the longitudes of fixed stars are increasing every year. In ancient India, the Hindu astronomers did not favour the idea of fixed stars changing their longitudes. In order to stabilize the zodiac, they had taken as the origin a point which is fixed on the ecliptic and as such is quite different from the VE point. This initial point being a fixed one, the longitude of stars measured from this origin remain invariable for all time. There was an epoch in the past when this initial point coincided with the VE point and thus the epoch may be called the zero-year. There is controversy over the determination of the zero-year. The reasons for the choice for the fixed zodiacal system by the Hindu astronomers as well as the epoch of zero-year have been found out on the basis of information available in various astronomical treatises of ancient India written in Sanskrit. -

Re-Defining Tajaka Varshaphal Charts (Annual Solar Return Charts)

Introduction Annual solar return charts based on Sun's return every year to his exact natal position are popular in Vedic and western astrology. Divisional charts of Tajaka varshaphal never worked with any consistency for this author with Lahiri ayanamsa. The discovery of Pushya-paksha ayanamsa and refinement of the definitions of some divisional charts based on an independent interpretation of Parasara and resulting experimentation, made divisional charts work reasonably well with Tithi Pravesha charts, but not with Tajaka varshaphal charts. When this author broke from tradition, went back to a teaching of Maharshi Parasara in “Vishnu Purana” on solar years and re-defined Tajaka varshaphal chart, divisional charts of Tajaka varshaphal started showing more consistent patterns. The new definition will be shared in this article with examples. Acknowledgment The basic idea of this research was inspired by a writing of Sri K.N. Rao, albeit in a different context. In his article “Jaimini Chara Dasa – My approach – 2” in “Journal of Astrology” (please see the internet link http://www.journalofastrology.com/article.php?article_id=317 ), he wrote in 2010 November that a particular pratyantardasa ended on Aug 17 th as per his calculations and on Aug 18 th as per “Jagannatha Hora” software. -

Hora, the Least Understood Divisional Chart By Shiv Kumar Chadha Hora is the divisional chart in Vedic Astrology, used for assessing the financial standing of the subject. The first half of odd signs and second half of the even signs, have the Hora of the Sun, whereas the second half of odd signs and first half of even signs have the Hora of the Moon. Currently Hora chart being made by the astrologers or computer programs, displays planets in Cancer and Leo signs only, leaving other signs blank. This is not correct way of making this chart and therefore does not help in interpreting it properly. Parashar in chapter 6 verse 6, has clearly stated that Horas are 24 in number with the 12 signs Aries to Pisces making two rounds to occupy these 24 Horas. To explain it, divide each sign in two parts and place Hora signs in Romans underlined as I, II, III, make them look distinguished in the diagram attached. Drekkana Varga By Ernst Wilhelm www.astrology-videos.com “Happiness, etc. with relations should be known from Drekkana.” -Sanketi Nidhi “A planet in its own decanate confers virtues".” -Saravali Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra states that the Drekkana indicates happiness with siblings, though Sanketi Nidhi expands upon this idea to include happiness with all relations. An important point, the Drekkana indicates the happiness that the native has with siblings/relations, not the life of the siblings. The life of the siblings is indicated by the relevant Bhava cusp that represents the sibling (3rd for younger, 11th for elder) and that Bhava cusp needs to be read in all Vargas – that is how the life of the siblings is to be read. What the Drekkana itself represents is the capacity that we have to work with all our relations towards mutually fulfilling goals and thus it indicates our happiness with our relations. Afflicted Bhavas and afflicted lords indicate those people in our live with whom we work less effectively; while strong Bhavas and lords in good Lajjitaadi Avasthas indicate those people with whom we work very effectively. Individuals with a good Drekkana are socially able, while those with troubled Drekkanas are socially unable. Remember that the 3rd Bhava, for which the Drekkana is the important Varga, represents an individual’s social ability. The social ability represented by the Drekkana and by the 3rd Bhava is initially developed through the association with siblings, and so ability with siblings is an important aspect of the Drekkana, but the Drekkana is not limited to our social ability with just siblings, it reflects our social ability with everyone that we come across. -

Introduction The issue of ayanamsa has vexed astrologers following the sidereal system for a long time. There are many popular ayanamsas and yet there is no conclusive proof, or evidence otherwise, for any of them. An ayanamsa deduced based on Surya Siddhanta and some philosophical rationalization enabled the author to discover some objective astrological principles. It will be shared with interested scholars and students of astrology in this write-up. Tropical vs Sidereal Zodiacs Sun's transit through tropical zodiac brings seasons and is associated with observable phenomena. For example, entry of Sun into tropical Aries is always aligned with spring equinox (when daytime and night time are of equal duration) and Sun's entry to tropical Cancer is always aligned with summer solstice (when daytime duration reaches a maximum). Tropical zodiac is tied to seasons and can be reliably fixed based on observable phenomena. Thus, some cultures started using it in astrology. However, zodiacal signs are supposed to be aligned to nakshatras, which correspond to constellations of stars in the sky. For example, the sign of Aries should contain Aswini nakshatra, Bharani nakshatra and a part of Krittika nakshatra.
