Iwas Lucky to Be in London in May and Catch
The Scream REBECCA NEMSER I was lucky to be in London in May and catch Fram , Tony Harrison’s latest play,* in its short but spectacu - lar run at the Olivier Theatre at London’s National Theatre. The play, all in rhyming verse, begins in Westminster Abbey, with moonlight shining through the stained glass of the great Rose Window, casting a reflection of Aeschylus on the cold stone floor. In walks the ghost of Gilbert Murray (Jeff Rawle), rising up from his grave and carrying a tragic mask. Murray, the early-twentieth-century Oxford professor and classicist, was also a humanitarian, deeply involved in the League of Nations and the United Nations and co-founder of Oxfam. But since his death fifty years ago, his once-admired verse translations of Aeschylus and Euripides have been scorned, and the world he tried to save has been ravaged by even more unimaginable horrors. So instead of decomposing in his urn, he has spent his afterlife composing this play. He calls up the spirit of Sybil Thorndike (Sian Thomas, as splendid as the character she plays), the actress who tri - umphed on the London stage as Clytemnestra, Hecuba, and Medea in Murray’s once wildly popular versions, and whisks her off to the Olivier stalls of the National Theatre—for Fram is not just a play within a play, but a theater within a theater. Most of all, it is a poem about poetry. The hero of the play is Fridtjof Nansen (Jasper Britton), Murray’s long-ago friend (and admirer of his translations)— the dashing Norwegian scientist, artist, and Arctic explorer *Tony Harrison, Fram . -

MEDIA RELEASE EMBARGOED UNTIL 6AM THURSDAY 24 MARCH SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 20 FINALISTS AND DISTINGUISHED JURY FOR LEXUS AUSTRALIAN SHORT FILM FELLOWSHIP The Sydney Film Festival and Lexus Australia today announced 21 filmmakers have been shortlisted by producers at The Weinstein Company, to compete for the largest cash fellowship for short film in Australia. Presiding over the selection process as Jury Chair is renowned Australian actress Judy Davis. The other jury members are Sydney Film Festival Director Nashen Moodley, Lexus Australia’s Adrian Weimers, and Australian producers Jan Chapman AO and Darren Dale. The industry luminaries will assess each finalist’s proposed short film projects to select up to four filmmakers, each of whom will receive a $50,000 Fellowship grant. The four successful candidates will be announced at the Sydney Film Festival (8-19 June 2016). C H A P T E R O N E ᨰ Introduction: The Shakespeare Test That’s what I like about Shakespeare; it’s the pictures. —Al Pacino, Looking for Richard The making of Shakespeare films dates nearly from the start of commer- cial presentations of the cinematic medium. In the earliest screen adapta- tions from Shakespeare, there were palpable tensions at work, not only between aesthetic and financial objectives, but also between developing notions of what film is and does. One filmic impulse is to document, but with Shakespeare there are any number of subjects worth documenting: the playtext, a particular theatrical realization of that playtext, or the his- torical conditions reflected or represented in either playtext or stage ver- sion. Another filmic impulse is, of course, to tell a story: here, too, Shake- speare’s playtexts offer an embarassment of rich possibilities. Further complicating matters are the uneasy, inescapable relations that the genres of nonfictional and fictional film bear with one another. The problem of distinguishing between modes of representation and ways of manipulat- ing materials (Plantinga 9–12) is as old as narrative filmmaking itself, and Shakespeare very quickly became part of the developing dilemma. It was in the 1890s that Georges Méliès pioneered the practice of storytelling through the exciting new medium; he also pioneered the 1 2 SHAKESPEARE IN THE CINEMA practice of borrowing from familiar materials, such as the Faust legend in The Cabinet of Mephistopheles (1897) or Charles Perrault’s account of Cin- derella (1899). Méliès would later borrow from Shakespeare—an abridged Hamlet and a film, starring himself, about the composition of Julius Caesar, both in 1907—but his were not the first Shakespeare films. -

And Psycho... it was just one of these absolute instant connections of perfect union of music and image, and Hitchcock at his best, and Bernard Herrmann at his best." Film composer Danny Elfman Herrmann's now-equally-iconic soundtrack to Hitchcock's iconic film showed generations of filmmakers to come the power that music could have. It's a rare example of a film score composed for strings only, a restriction of tonal colour that was, according to an interview with Herrmann, intended as the musical equivalent of Hitchcock's choice of black and white (Hitchcock had originally requested a jazz score, as well as for the shower scene to be silent; Herrmann clearly decided he knew better). Also known as the 'Psycho theme', this prelude is frenetic and fast-paced, suggesting flight and pursuit. -
