ESSAY Untangling Attribution David D. Clark* and Susan Landau** I. Introduction In February 2010, former Director of the National Security Agency Mike McConnell wrote, "We need to develop an early-warning system to monitor cyberspace, identify intrusions and locate the source of attacks with a trail of evidence that can support diplomatic, military and legal options and we must be able to do this in milliseconds. More specifically, we need to reengineer the Internet to make attribution, geolocation, intelligence analysis and impact assessment - who did it, from where, why and what was the result - more manageable."I The Internet was not designed with the goal of deterrence in mind, and perhaps a future Internet should be designed differently. McConnell's statement is part of a recurring theme that a secure Internet must provide better attribution for actions occurring on the network. Wobbrock is a Professor of human-computer interaction (HCI) in The Information School, and, by courtesy, in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, which U.S. News ranked the 8th best global university for 2021. Prof. Wobbrock’s work seeks to scientifically understand people’s experiences of computers and information, and to improve those experiences by inventing new interactive technologies, especially for people with disabilities. His specific research topics include input & interaction techniques, human performance measurement & modeling, HCI research & design methods, mobile computing, and accessible computing. Prof. Wobbrock has co-authored ~200 publications and 19 patents, receiving 25 paper awards, including 7 best papers and 8 honorable mentions from ACM CHI, the flagship conference in HCI. For his work in accessible computing, he received the 2017 SIGCHI Social Impact Award and the 2019 SIGACCESS ASSETS Paper Impact Award. He was named the #1 Most Influential Scholar in HCI by the citation-ranking system AMiner in 2018 and 2021, and was runner-up in 2020. He was also inducted into the prestigious CHI Academy in 2019. His work has been covered in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, USA Today, and other outlets. Special Issue on “Urban Informatics” Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science This special issue will bring together state-of-the-art research that bridges urban science and emerging technologies, which will lead to advances in urban informatics and the practical domain of urban systems. The aim of this special issue is to publish original research and papers to stimulate discussions on recent trends in urban informatics. The wide availability of sensing technology and geo-big data provide new opportunities for gaining a deeper understanding of this type of knowledge with unprecedented resolutions. For instance, “much of our urban theory and data in the past has been about the low frequency city - how cities change over years and decades but to this we now add changes in seconds, minutes, hours days and so on” (Batty, 2013). In particular, “Many examples will cover this mix and essentially we need new theories and new models to handle many of these questions” (Batty, 2013). Thus, priorities will be given to full papers that focus on environmentally related techniques, tools, methodologies and policies. In this special issue, we would like to solicit innovative and original ideas on how advances in urban informatics can help and improve smart cities. In short, we are looking for innovative papers on urban informatics and smart cities. Topics include (but are not limited to): 1. Urban Sensing 2. Urban Big Data Infrastructure 3. Urban Computing 4. Brad Myers is the principal investigator for the Natural Programming Project and He served as UB’s provost from 2004-2011, was dean of the Bourns College of the Pebbles Handheld Computer Project. He has been a consultant on user interface Engineering at the University of California-Riverside from 1997-2004. Previously, design and implementation to over 75 companies, and regularly teaches courses on user he spent 19 years as professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, interface design and software. He is IEEE Fellow, ACM Fellow, a member of the CHI including seven years as department chair. Fellow of the IEEE and AAAS, Tripathi also Academy and winner of three Most Influential Paper Awards. Myers’ research interests he holds an honorary doctorate from the Indian Institute of Information Technology, focus on user interface development systems, user interfaces, handheld computers, Allahabad. This course builds the foundation of the skill set and tools necessary to address urban analytics problems with urban data. It starts with basic computational skills, statistical analysis, good practices for data curation and coding, and further introduces a machine learning paradigm and a variety of common supervised and unsupervised learning tools used in urban informatics, including regression analysis, clustering and classification. After this class you should be able to formulate a question relevant to Urban Informatics, locate and curate an appropriate data set, identify and apply analytic approaches to answer the question, obtain the answer and assess it with respect to its certainty level as well as the limitations of the approach and the data. The course will also contain project-oriented practice in urban informatics, including relevant soft skills – verbal and written articulation of the problem statement, approach, achievements, limitations and implications. The course heavily relies on Python on the implementation end and understanding of probability concepts on the theoretic end. However, it is not a course in programming, statistics, econometrics, or computer science per se. Rather, it is a practice-oriented synthesis of these disciplines with strong urban focus — concepts and techniques are motivated and illustrated by applications to urban problems and datasets, illustrated by iPython notebooks.
