AUTHOR'S COPYRIGHT ALLAHABAD LAW JOURNAL PRESS, ALLAHABAD PRINTER M. N. PANDEY DEDICATED WITH PROFOUND RESPECT AND ADMIRATION TO THE MEMORY OF GENERAL SIR ALEXANDER CUNNINGHAM, C.S.T. 1814 1893 FATHER OF INDIAN ARCHAEOLOGY Colonel A. Cunningham, whale he was the Chief Engi- neer of the North-Western Provinces, laid betore Lord Canning in November 1861, a memorandum praying for a complete and systematic archaeological investigation of the ancient historic ruins of Upper India. This led to his appointment as the first Archaeological Surveyor to the Government of India. As director of the Archaeological Survey (1870 1885) he brought to light the immense importance of the archaeological ruins of more than fifty ancient cities including KauSambi in the United Provin- ces. (A.S.R. Vol. I). PREFACE A few of my articles on the early history of KauSambi were published in papers and journals from time to time, and a paper on a controversial point of its history in the second century B.C. was read at the SIXTH ORIENTAL CONFERENCE, held at Baroda. All these formed the nucleus of the present monograph. In it I have endeavoured to present an account of the ancient greatness of KauSambi, now reduced to a ruined fortress. The facts have been arranged to give the story a con- tinuous form, which, however, has been broken on account of the paucity of materials available on the subject. The materials for these pages have been drawn mainly from primary sources Sanskrit and Pali literature. The references in the ancient texts have been used after careful sifting in the light of epigraphic, archaeological and numismatic evi- dences.

PAPER 4 Detail Study Of Kathak, Nautch Girls, Nritta, Nritya, Different Gharana-s, Present Status, Institutions, Artists Module 12 Pioneers Of Kathak 1930-1950 Pioneers are those who show the path not attempted before. They lead us to light to the new ways of doing something. These are people with vision to fulfill a mission and they are given divine support by history and circumstances to do so. Thus, pioneers are people, ordinary in appearance but with special abilities and mind backed by hard work. Once a form that was long forgotten and got known and established as Kathak, many stars of other forms, most notably Bharatanatyam and Kathakali did much to learn and promote Kathak and help it reach national acclaim. In this, Bharatanatyam trained Ram Gopal, Kathakali trained Uday Shankar and pioneers in films like Menaka and Sadhona Bose took this form further and can be called pioneers, in addition to the generation that followed their example. It would not be wrong to call Uday Shankar a cult figure of the early part of the 20th century. He was a showman, a creator of magical spectacles and a dancer par excellence. He was not a trained dancer, so his movements flowed from the heart. He 1 created the Indian ballet scene because nothing like it existed before. Originally a painter, on his museum visits to delve into books, Uday got fascinated with pictures of sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses in varied poses. He began imitating the poses. Although unfamiliar with dance techniques, the images provided inspiration to translate into dance movement.

Politicizing Islam: State, gender, class, and piety in France and India By Zehra Fareen Parvez A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Michael Burawoy, Chair Professor Raka Ray Professor Cihan Tuğal Professor Loïc Wacquant Professor Kiren Aziz-Chaudhry Fall 2011 Abstract Politicizing Islam: State, gender, class, and piety in France and India by Zehra Fareen Parvez Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology University of California, Berkeley Professor Michael Burawoy, Chair This dissertation is a comparative ethnographic study of Islamic revival movements in Lyon, France, and Hyderabad, India. It introduces the importance of class and the state in shaping piety and its politicization. The project challenges the common conflation of piety and politics and thus, the tendency to homogenize “political Islam” even in the context of secular states. It shows how there have been convergent forms of piety and specifically gendered practices across the two cities—but divergent Muslim class relations and in turn, forms of politics. I present four types of movements. In Hyderabad, a Muslim middle-class redistributive politics directed at the state is based on patronizing and politicizing the subaltern masses. Paternalistic philanthropy has facilitated community politics in the slums that are building civil societies and Muslim women’s participation. In Lyon, a middle-class recognition politics invites and opposes the state but is estranged from sectarian Muslims in the working-class urban peripheries. Salafist women, especially, have withdrawn into a form of antipolitics, as their religious practices have become further targeted by the state.
