I now write to you nearly one year later as we prepare for Purim 5781. The weight of this looming anniversary is ironically juxtaposed with our Holy Day all about fun and joy. But Purim teaches us to be resilient, no matter what or who stands in our way. It is our reminder that while resilience is not easy, it is our only option. We can only keep on when we rely on each other. And as Rabbi Latz teaches us, joy in the face of adversity is an act of ometz lev, or courage. I am thrilled to share with you this Purim Haggadah, a set of resources for your celebration. Print the entire packet, one page, or anything in between. We hope it prepares you in the days leading up to Purim, enables your celebrating the week- and day-of, and serves as an important artifact of pandemic times (but that you will continue using it in years to come). Like Esther and Mordechai before us, I pray we find the strength to face our fears head-on this Purim season. Oh, and wear your masks! Chag purim sameach, Forrest P.S. Please let us know how you engage with this Haggadah, and take photos of your Purim celebrations this year! Tag #ShirTikvahPurim on social media for your costume and game pictures. Coming Out As Who You Are BY JUDY LUTZ THROW OFF YOUR MASK THROW OFF YOUR FAÇADE I AM WITH YOU TO HELP YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO BE WHO YOU ARE MAY YOU BE LIKE ESTHER AND NOT BE AFRAID TO REVEAL WHO YOU ARE MAY YOU BE LIKE VASHTI AND NOT BE AFRAID TO SPEAK OUT MAY YOU DEFEAT ALL OF YOUR HAMANS MAY YOU BE BLESSED IN YOUR COMING OUT AND IN BEING WHO YOU ARE MEANT TO BE The Purim Story Part I: Megillah at Home Everything is turned upside down for Purim (this year, more than ever), and we welcome you to turn your own homes inside out to explore an impromptu Purim spiel in your living room! Below is a (very) condensed version of the Purim story for you to explore. Whether you are at home alone, with family, or with house/pod mates, we encourage you to dress up, set a stage, and tell the story however you like! Here are some ways you can help set the scene: 1.Create a stage for yourself! Maybe you move a dining room table a couple feet over, or roll out a carpet to make a setting. Alternatively, maybe it is a walking Purim spiel and you perform a different scene in each room or space of your home. Take a moment to find and create your space. 2.Wiggle it out! Purim invites us to welcome silliness into all aspects of ourselves, and you need some silliness for this activity. Turn on some tunes or just dance and wiggle it out. Maybe you laugh and make funny sounds, maybe it is just 30 seconds of your weirdest dance move ever - whatever allows you to welcome some Purim goofiness. 3.Give yourself permission to get weird - even if it is just reading the script aloud in 60 seconds! So without further ado, here is a short and sweet Purim story for you to play with to your heart's content! The Purim Story Part II: 60-Second Megillah There was this king, Achashverosh, who had a lot of land and a lot of subjects, and he had a big party. Like half a year long. At the end of this party, he asked his queen, Vashti, to show off her dancing skills for his friends, and Vashti refused. So he kicked her out. Now he needed a new queen, since he kicked out his old queen, and he invited anybody who wanted to be queen to be part of the contest. Lots of beautiful people wanted to be queen. One woman, Hadassah, who you know as Esther, did not want to be queen. But her cousin, Mordechai, convinced her to try out for the role. Of course, Esther was chosen to be the new queen, but she kept a secret from King Achashverosh. She did not tell him she was Jewish. At the same time, there was this horrible man named Haman (BOO!) who had a lot of control. He was the king’s right-hand man, and he was not a good person. When Mordechai refused to bow down to Haman, he got really mad and he decided he wanted to get rid of all the Jews. He drew lots (called "purim" in Hebrew) and he randomly chose a day for his evil plan to take place. He chose the 13th of Adar. Mordechai heard about this and told Esther she had to stand up to the king. She tried to refuse but eventually gave in. She fasted for days and then threw a party for the king and Haman. She told the king that somebody was out to get her, and the king was so mad! Remember, he did not know his queen was Jewish. Achashverosh decided he should honor Mordechai and get rid of Haman. All of the Jews celebrated and they made a new holiday called Purim. We eat hamantaschen, shaped like Haman’s hat, or maybe his pocket, or maybe his ears. We give tzedakah to people in need, and we party!!! Mask Cut-Out Print, cut, and decorate this mask. Then add string or a popsicle stick. Mask Cut-Out Print, cut, and decorate this mask, too.
