Toward A Gender-Inclusive Hevra Kadisha 1 Tahara I’m wondering about you, chevra kadisha, the “holy society,” who will prepare my body, once I’m no longer in it, for the earth. Will you know me already, or see me for the first time as you wash and shroud me, as my father was washed and dressed in simple white tachrichim, for those about to stand before God. Perhaps by then I’ll know if I believe in God. I like the democratic nature of the shroud, an equalizing garment. You may see a body that surprises you. You may not have seen a man’s body like this one before you, which I hope is very old, wrinkled, and (since I’m wishing) fit, muscled as much as an old man can be. You’ll see scars. Ragged dog bit forearm, elbow my father picked gravel from over the sink, then flushed with foaming iodine, and the long double horizons on my chest, which trunked my body like a tree. If I am unexpected, let me not seem grotesque to you, as I have to many people, perhaps even my own parents, and others whose highest kindness was to say nothing. Curriculum for HaCheder HaCheder is the part-time education centre for the United Synagogue communities of Stanmore & Canons Park, Belmont, Edgware and Kenton 1 HaCheder Curriculum Introduction Dear Parents, I am delighted to introduce our curriculum, which has been developed in order to ensure that your children are learning in the manner most appropriate to them. Cheder means different things to different people. Here at HaCheder, we are offering a learning experience that is up-to- date and modern, in both its focus and presentation, without losing any of the traditional values that we cherish. At HaCheder we utilise technology and workshops as well as traditional learning techniques in order to make cheder an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Alongside our traditional curriculum we have annual events such as our Purim Fair, Pesach Seder and Chanukah plays as well as exciting practical workshops where students learn not only about a Festival but actually get hands-on experience in creating something special for that festival. I would like to assure each and every parent that HaCheder will not only continue to grow in strength through this curriculum but that we will continually strive to meet the needs of your children. Mizrahi Course for Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia Hanukkah and Purim: Similar yet Different Introduction -Hanukkah and Purim, the next two holidays, are not in Torah: Both are rabbinic. -Torah only has Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the three pilgrimage festivals – Pessah, Shavuot and Sukkot. -Both colorful – stay in mind of kids. -Both celebrate Jewish victory over persecution. -Both miraculous: We recite Al HaNissim on both. -Both so important rabbis turned their observance into post-Torah (rabbinic) commandments. YET: -The story of Purim has a book in the Bible (Esther), a tractate in the Talmud (Megillah) and a volume in the Midrash (Esther Rabbah). Hanukkah has none of them. It rates only a few mentions in Talmud [Shabbat 21a-24a], as an appendage to a discussion of what wicks and oils one can use for Shabbat lights. -The Book of Esther does not mention God, yet is in the Bible; the Books of Maccabees do, yet are not in the Bible. -The story of Purim is not known outside the Bible, yet is in the Bible. The events of Hanukkah are known outside the Bible, yet are not in the Bible. -Hallel (psalms of praise for God) recited on Hanukkah, but not Purim. -Hanukkah began with the physical (armed rebellion) and ended with the spiritual (rededication of the Temple). Purim began with the spiritual (prayer and fasting) and ended with the physical (armed resistance to killers). -On Purim, persecutors wanted to kill ALL the Jews. -

These are the words that Moses spoke to Joshua as Moses neared death. Moses was aware that death and mourning, endings and beginnings, require strength and fortitude. And so, over three thousand years later, I say to you “Chazak v’amatz,-May you be strong and of good courage”. Whether you are reading this booklet as a one loved one is nearing death or simply because you are interested in Jewish traditions, may you be granted strength. In our death denying society, death and mourning is a subject most people would rather avoid. You have chosen to address this difficult yet important topic head on and for that you should be strengthened. Please note that this booklet is our congregation’s attempt to offer you a brief overview of death and mourning practices in Jewish tradition. We hope that it gives you the critical information you require in your time of need. For a more detailed description of Jewish laws and customs surrounding death and mourning, please feel free to contact me. JEWISH MOURNING TRADITIONS Shmira / The Vigil (From Chevra Kadisha) When a person dies, the soul or neshama hovers around the body. This neshama is the essence of the person, the consciousness and totality, the thoughts, deeds, experiences and relationships. The body was its container and the neshama, now on the way to the Eternal World, refuses to leave until the body is buried. In effect, the totality of the person who died continues to exist for a while in the vicinity of the body. Jewish mourning ritual is therefore most concerned with the feelings of the deceased, not only the feelings of the mourners. How we treat the body and how we behave around the body must reflect how we would act around the very person himself. IMMEDIATELY AFTER DEATH Jacob is promised that when he dies, “Joseph’s hand shall close your eyes.” (Genesis 46:4). The 16th century “Code of Jewish Law” dictated that the eyes should be closed, arms and hands extended and brought close to the body and the lower jaw closed and bound. The body was placed on the floor, with the feet towards the door. The body was covered with a sheet and a lit candle placed near the head. The Midrash states that on Shabbat one does not close the eyes, bind the jaw or light a candle. Some Jewish communities would place potsherds on the eyes; Russians placed coins. Ancient superstitions in many cultures held that if the eyes were opened, the ghost of the deceased would return to fetch away another of the household. -

Purim, which literally means “lots”, is the holiday in which Jews commemorate being saved from prosecution in the ancient Persian Empire. According to the Book of Esther in the Bible, the Jews of the city of Shushan were threatened by the villain Haman (boo!!!) a prime minister who convinces the King Ahaseurus to kill the Jews because the Jew Mordecai refused to bow down to Haman (boo!!!) Haman casts lots, hence the name of the holiday, to determine the date he would carry out his plan: the 13th of Adar. In the end the Jews are saved by the heroic Queen Esther, Mordecai’s niece and adopted daughter who married Ahasuerus after he banished his first wife, rebellious Vahshti. When Ahasuerus discovers that his wife Esther is Jewish he decided to reverse Haman’s ( boo!!!) decree and instead of the Jews being killed, Haman (boo!!!), his sons and other enemies are killed instead. How is Purim Celebrated? Purim is the most raucous holiday on the Jewish calendar. Observance of the holiday begins with dressing up in costume–some people dress as characters from the Purim story. It is a mitzvah, yes, a commandment, to listen to the story of Purim chanted from the Megillah Esther (The Scroll of Esther), which we are so blessed to have in our possession, and to hear every word. It is customary to make noise with a grogger every time Haman’s name is mentioned in order to fulfill the obligation of blotting out Haman’s name.
