1 FRA PRESIDENTEN (september og oktober 2013) God Dag, Summer is going by fast. What a wonderful turnout we had at our August 12th meeting. With over 100 in attendance, we had initiation of 10 new members, as well as 22 member awards for various years of membership and 10 members received new member recruitment awards. Our post meeting festivities included a fabulous performance by “Kaivama” the Finnish- American Folk group from Minneapolis. Jonathan Rundman on guitar, harmonium and piano and Sara Pajunen on violin played song after song for the crowd’s enjoyment. I believe a good time was had by all. (See photos from concert on Page 4.) Look for the details of our next meeting on September 9th on Page 3. Pam Steuernagel and I will be cooking Chicken Tetrazzini and providing garden salad, bread and dessert for you. Folk Fair Summer has ended so it's time to think about Folk Fair! Please check your calendar because we need your help to make it a success. Shifts are 4-1/2 hours long and the booth has to be staffed when Folk Fair is open during the following hours: Friday, November 22nd 9am to 10pm (Education Day from 9am to 4pm & General Public from 2pm to 10pm) Saturday, November 23rd 10am to 10pm Sunday, November 24th 10am to 7pm We also need help loading the rental truck on Wednesday, November 20th around 4pm at Norway House and then unloading the truck at State Fair Park and again packing up the booth and loading/unloading the truck on Sunday, November 24th at 7pm. WE NEED YOUR HELP FOR THE SCANDINAVIAN FESTIVAL Where can you help? Your help is needed each year at the Scandinavian Festival. We could not share our heritage with Milwaukee's diverse cultural mix and at the same time earn some money for Fosselyngen Lodge and Norway House without your help. The festival is Saturday, October 5th, from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm and will be held at Ronald Reagan Elementary School in New Berlin, same as last year. The school is located on the west side of Calhoun Road about a block north of W. National Avenue. That area is west of Moorland Road and will be the next stop and go light after Moorland. There are many areas you could work in. We ask that you work a minimum of 4 hours, but don't feel you have to limit yourself to that amount of time. Many stay longer and some are there all day. The 4 hours entitle you to enter the festival without having to pay the $8 fee. You may work 4 hours in the same area or spend 2 hours in each of 2 different areas with or without a break between. Think about it and then call Pam at 414-651-4575 or call her at Norway House Thursdays 2:00-6:00 at 414-321-2637. She'll match you up with the best place for you. Your name, area and times will be on a list at the admission table inside the front (main) door. Please check in there. The festival depends on your help. This is also a source of volunteering that goes on the "community" area, not the “fraternal” area. Remember, Sons of Norway International depends on our volunteer hours to maintain its tax-free status. Please remember to park in one of the far lots, not in the area in front of the school. This is for the public to park in. If they cannot find a parking place, they will leave and we will lose their business. Fosselyngen Runespeak 7 september og oktober 2013 Fridtjof Nansen Remembered 120 years ago Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) set out on a courageous and historic exploration of the Arctic. His ship, Fram, was built to withstand the pressure of the ice and carried 12 men and enough food and equipment to last five years. Nansen’s mission was to head north to the remotest and least understood place on earth, the Arctic, in order to study the polar ocean currents. His approach was to get his ship stuck in the ice in order to track the ocean currents. The daring journey and the discoveries found surprised Nansen, his team and the world. Before the turn of the century, research on the North and South Poles was non-existent, and travel to these places was even more unheard of. “So little was known that some experts believed the poles would be warm or there was land at the North Pole and the surrounding seas would be shallow,” said University of Oslo professor and historian Robert Marc Friedman. Nansen’s journey would change the tides of oceanographic research. The risky voyage planned to use the Northern Hemisphere’s east-to-west ocean current. Nansen believed that the current would carry their ship across the North Pole. This theory was doubted by many. He convinced the Norwegian government to grant his crew NOK 20,000 in order to build Fram, their heavy-duty ship and home for the next three years. The findings were spectacular and even stunned Nansen. Their first goal was to measure the ocean depth, a simple enough task that became an unexpected difficulty. Their 2,000 meter sounding line was too short because the polar sea was surprisingly very deep, twice as deep, in fact as Nansen anticipated. The men were able to measure the depth of the ocean to 3900 meters with line constructed from their ships rigging. Nansen realized that the ocean depths and the different combinations of fresh, salt, warm and cold water played a crucial role in the oceanographic currents and affected weather patterns around the world. “He recognized that measuring different types of water, based in salinity and temperature, would enable him to determine the origins of the water,” noted Friedman. These, he says, are “some of the most significant building blocks in our contemporary understanding of physical oceanography.” Nansen’s discoveries answered many questions and researchers are still sorting through data in order to figure out ocean mysteries. In fact, a research group at the Norwegian Polar Institute has planned their own voyage to the Arctic, following in Nansen’s tracks over a century later. Their vessel “The Lance” and its crew will set out into the ice next winter to study the Arctic and its ever-changing climate. Nansen’s legacy transformed the way we predict weather patterns. After returning from his journey in 1896, Nansen had successfully pioneered the unknown. Nansen went on to become a leading politician and activist for humanitarian efforts in Norway and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1922. 120 years after his Arctic adventure, Nansen continues to influence the way we understand the world. Vikings: A New View By Gail Larson Toerpe, Fosselyngen Member When my husband, Bob, and I visited England some years ago, we planned on also going into Scotland, having rented a car. Driving through the North York moors of England, we discovered a “museum village” in which various craftsmen and women demonstrated ancient crafts. At one small building we saw a woman creating objects from yarn. However, the implement she was using was unlike any loom I’d ever seen. It was wooden and looked like a 2 X 4* with pegs stuck in holes on top. The woman, whose name we learned was Caroline, was very informative telling us watchers that she was weaving on a Viking peg loom, brought to England by the Vikings some 1200 years past. Caroline had on display a number of items she had woven: a small purse, a rug and a woolen scarf, to name a few. Seeing as how Bob and I both hail from Scandinavian ancestors, and that we both love history, we were most interested in the loom. Responding to my request to buy one, I was told that Caroline’s husband made them. And, yes, we could buy one. The problem was that we were on our way to Scotland but would be traveling back through England in a few days. The weaver kindly offered to have us meet at her home and she’d have a loom for us. Directions to her house were written down and we were on our way to the highlands. Ending our tour there we drove back through the moors and headed to the weaver’s home. Although we naturally had never ever been there I was sure we could somehow find our way. If not, we would ask someone if we were anywhere near her home. We were asked, however, not to come past 11 p.m. at night. I must digress here to say that I believe Bob was born with a compass in his head and could find his way to anywhere. We pulled up in front of Caroline’s home at one minute to 11 p.m. Our British “cousins” greeted us warmly, serving us tea and the like. Can you imagine? They were so trusting that they welcomed total strangers into their home late at night (strangers from another country, mind you). Not only had she written down weaving directions for the Viking peg loom, but Caroline gave me her email address in case I h ad questions. While I haven’t yet woven anything on the loom, I’m thrilled to have it at the ready. The whole experience was something one doesn’t forget. We got much more than a Viking peg loom; we got a large portion of hospitality from some British cousins. * The loom is 2 ft long by 1-1/2” high by 2” deep. Ours has 32 holes and has extra pegs if needed. (See photo at right.)
