    SYBILLE KUNTZ Weingut Hugh Johnson Pocket Wine Book 2020: “Progressive individual organic estate at Lieser especially Niederberg-Helden vineyards. Intense wines, one of each ripeness category, intended for gastronomy, listed in many top restaurants.” 2019 Mosel-Riesling Kabinett trocken Alcohol 13,0 Vol%, Residual sugar 6,6 g/l, Acidity 7,3 g/l. General: Kabinett is the basic wine in the superior quality wine category (Qualitätswein mit Prädikat) defined by the German Wine Law. It is gained mainly from old vines farmed according to biodynamic principles in the Pauls Valley, a side valley formed by the River Mosel some thirty-five thousand years ago. Today it is part of the single vineyard site Lieser Schlossberg. The heat is collected here like in a parabolic mirror. The soil is 100% blue devonian shale and adds particular mineral notes into the wines. We cultivate a spontaneous cover crop to grow in the rows which keeps useful and harmful creatures in a natural balance. Low yield is assured through the pruning of the vines to 8–10 buds/vine. At the end of June, shortly after blossom, manual shoot thinning is done as well as removal of leaves and secondary shoots in the grape zone. This results in light-weight, small-berried grapes perfectly exposed to the sunrays. Total yield amounts to 40 hl/ha, which is about a bottle of Riesling per vine. What is important for the timing of the harvest is to reach physiological ripeness in mid-October, with sugar readings of around 100° Oechsle (Specific gravity 100° = 1,100 kg/l or 24,0° Brix).

The founder of the estate, Dr. Robert Weil, purchased his first vineyards on the Kiedricher Berg in 1867, at a time when he was still a German professor at the Sorbonne in Paris. With the approach of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, he was forced to leave France. He settled in Wiesbaden, where he worked as a journalist, and Kiedrich, where he expanded his vineyard holdings by acquiring the best sites on the Kiedricher Berg. Thanks to his unwavering commitment to quality-oriented viticulture, his foresight, and his willingness to invest in the estate, it developed quickly and its wines were soon celebrated in international circles. Spätlese and Auslese wines from Weingut Robert Weil graced the table of many European imperial and royal houses as the white counterparts of the Bordeaux reds. Today, the estate’s 90 ha (222 acres) of vineyards are planted 100% with Riesling. Throughout its history the estate has always focused on the Riesling grape and adhered to strict, quality-ori- ented practices in the vineyard – such as stringent pruning to control yields and selective harvesting by hand – and in the cellar, where the wines are vinified as gently as possible. This unwavering and uncompromising quality management is central to Weingut Robert Weil’s unbroken streak of producing wines at every Prädikat classification, up to and including Trockenbeerenauslese, for every vintage since 1989. The estate’s dedication to Riesling since 1875 has led numerous observers of the international wine world to regard Weingut Robert Weil, with its “château character”, as a worldwide symbol of German Riesling culture.

Very sweet and intense on the palate but at the same time piquant and racy, this is a perfectly lifted and refreshing TBA with a lot of terroir expression. It is an incredibly frisky, salty and textured sweet wine like only very few TBAs you can find today. Again, I don't pick up much sulfur here. Tasted in May 2020. Extremely rare. Drink Date: 2030 – 2080. Weingut Eva Fricke 2019 Lorcher Kapellenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Rating: 99 The 2019 Lorcher Kapellenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese offers a bright and highly finessed yet concentrated raisin and candied lemon aroma intertwined with notes of mandarin, pineapple, waffle with confectioner's sugar and cooked strawberries. Round and intense but also finessed and delicate on the palate, this TBA is hugely refined and even salty, amazingly clear and bright and finishes with piquant, highly stimulating salinity and finesse. A fantastic Rheingau TBA from quartzite soils. Tasted in May 2020. Weingut Eva Fricke 2019 Lorcher Schlossberg Riesling Beerenauslese Rating: 97 From a mix of green, golden, overripe and violet berries picked in the second half of September, the 2019 Lorcher Schlossberg Beerenauslese in concentrated and precise on the spicy nose that comes along as precise as an ice wine, with concentrated yet fine fruit and a touch of honey.

    SYBILLE KUNTZ Weingut 2011 SYBILLE KUNTZ Mosel-Riesling Spätlese trocken Alcohol 13,5 Vol%, Residual sugar 6,8 g/l, Acidity 6,8 g/l. General: Spätlese (“late harvest”) is, as its designation indicates, picked late, usually at the end of October, in the Niederberg-Helden a single vineyard site (designated an Erste Lage or “First Growth“ site). In these steep sloped vineyards grow old vines (40–60 years), planted in the middle of the last century, partly ungrafted and managed under organic farming methods. The grapes have a long ripening phase, hence the sugar reading at harvest is higher, as is the aroma potential. A Riesling hardly to be topped in terms of density and expression. A dry and truly exquisite wine. We allow a spontaneous cover crop to grow in the rows which keeps useful and harmful creatures in a natural balance. Low yield is assured through the pruning of the vines to 6–8 buds/vine. At the end of June, shortly after blossom, manual shoot thinning is done as well as removal of leaves and secondary shoots in the grape zone, followed by green harvest in August. This results in light-weight, small-berried grapes perfectly exposed to the sunrays. Total yield amounts to 25 hl/ha, which is about 500 ml per vine. What is important for the timing of the harvest is to reach physiological ripeness in mid-October, with sugar readings of 110° Oechsle (Specific gravity 110° = 1,110 kg/l or 26,0 ° Brix). The grapes are collected during harvest in small crates to ensure that they reach the cellar undamaged.
