Language, Culture, and National Identity BY ERIC HOBSBAWM LANGUAGE, culture, and national identity is the ·title of my pa per, but its central subject is the situation of languages in cul tures, written or spoken languages still being the main medium of these. More specifically, my subject is "multiculturalism" in sofar as this depends on language. "Nations" come into it, since in the states in which we all live political decisions about how and where languages are used for public purposes (for example, in schools) are crucial. And these states are today commonly iden tified with "nations" as in the term United Nations. This is a dan gerous confusion. So let me begin with a few words about it. Since there are hardly any colonies left, practically all of us today live in independent and sovereign states. With the rarest exceptions, even exiles and refugees live in states, though not their own. It is fairly easy to get agreement about what constitutes such a state, at any rate the modern model of it, which has become the template for all new independent political entities since the late eighteenth century. It is a territory, preferably coherent and demarcated by frontier lines from its neighbors, within which all citizens without exception come under the exclusive rule of the territorial government and the rules under which it operates. Against this there is no appeal, except by authoritarian of that government; for even the superiority of European Community law over national law was established only by the decision of the constituent SOCIAL RESEARCH, Vol. -

The joint statement expressed several expectations, inter alia, for both parties to accept a temporary international presence in the City of Al-Quds and to monitor cessation of hostilities, as well as for the Security Council and the General Assembly to address the grave developments. In this regard, we strongly support the convening of the General Assembly formal plenary meeting on Thursday, 20 May 2021, as announced by the President of the Assembly, in line with the spirit contained in the joint statement as agreed by the leaders of the three countries. Although the Chinese leadership unarguably saw Obama’s absence as a not-to-be-missed diplomatic opportunity, their visits were primarily efforts to begin correcting Beijing’s policy missteps, especially in the disputed South China Sea, that created friction between China and the members of ASEAN in recent years. The strongest party which will take its seats in the plenary chambers in Brus- sels (and, as an expensive anachronism, also in Strasbourg), albeit only for a brief period, is the Brexit Party, with 29 seats, whose programme is implicit in their name. Protocol to Amend the Framework Agreements on Enhancing ASEAN Economic Cooperation The Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, the President of the Republic of Indonesia,the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the President of the Republic of the Philippines, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore and the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand; RECALLING the Framework Agreement on Enhancing ASEAN Economic Cooperation ("the Agreement") signed on 28 January 1992 at the Fourth Summit Meeting held in Singapore; DESIRING to expedite the implementation of the Common Effective Preferential Tariff (CEPT) Scheme for the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA); NOTING that Article 1 2A of tile Agreement provides for amendments to it; HAVE AGREED AS FOLLOWS: ARTICLE 1 Article 2, section A, paragraph 1 of the Agreement shall be amended by deleting the expression "l5 years" and substituting it with the expression "l0 years (beginning I January 1993)". ARTICLE 2 The following shall be inserted after Article 1 2 as a new Article 1 2A to the Agreement: "Accession of New Members New Members of ASEAN shall accede to the Agreement oil terms and conditions consistent with it and which have been agreed between them and the existing Members of ASEAN.". ARTICLE 3 This Protocol shall enter into force upon the deposit of instruments of ratification or acceptance by all signatory governments with the Secretary-General of ASEAN which shall be done not later than 1 January 1996. This Protocol shall be deposited with the Secretary-General of ASEAN, who shall promptly furnish a certified copy thereof to each Member Country. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the undersigned have signed the Protocol to Amend the Framework Agreement on Enhancing ASEAN Economic Cooperation. -

She and her Tory Party began to dismantle the welfare state by selling off nationalized industries, reducing social programs, and implementing monetarist economic policies. In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan, president of the United States, was elected on a similar neoliberal agenda. To the Thatcherite critique of the welfare state, Reagan and his Republican Party added to their list of causes of the United States’ economic malaise the hedonism of the 1960s, the rise of the new left, the anti–Vietnam War movement, the radicalization of the civil rights movement, and, later, the rise of feminism. In 1989, the Soviet Union withdrew from Eastern Europe and, in 1991, collapsed, thus ending the bipolar system that had divided the world into two spheres of influence, one American and one Soviet, since the end of World War II. As Russian power faded and the United States emerged dur- ing the 1990s as the world’s only superpower, the neoliberal agenda articu- lated by Thatcher and Reagan began to spread to the major states in Europe, including Russia and the states of Eastern Europe, and beyond to states in Asia, Latin America, and even Africa. -

April 2020 «Corona-Pandemie»: imagingswiss – der Fotoverband fordert die Öffnung des KMU-Detailhandels Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, Bundesrätinnen und Bundesräte imagingswiss – der Fotoverband hat die am 16. April vom Bundesrat vorgestellten «Exit»-Pläne zur Kenntnis genommen. Auch wenn unser Verband die an die epidemiologische Lage angepasste Öffnung begrüsst, sind für ihn die Entscheide betreffend dem Detailhandel inakzeptabel. Genauso wie der Bundesrat, setzt auch imagingswiss – der Fotoverband auf eine etappierte Rückkehr zur Normalität. Diese Etappierung muss in Funktion der gesundheitspolitischen Indikatoren erfolgen. Diese Indikatoren entwickeln sich sehr zufriedenstellend. Der 3-Tages-Durchschnitt der Ansteckungsrate betrug per 16. April 1.5 Prozent pro Tag, die Anzahl Tage bis zur Fallverdopplung 49.3. Diese Indikatoren erlauben eine weitgehende Öffnung der Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft. Dieses Urteil scheint auch der Bundesrat zu teilen, ansonsten würde er den «Betrieben mit personenbezogenen Dienstleistungen mit Körperkontakt» keine Öffnungserlaubnis geben. Der Entscheid des Bundesrates ist ein Schlag ins Gesicht des KMU-Detailhandels. Vor allem die eklatante Ungleichbehandlung innerhalb des Detailhandels selbst – der KMU-Detailhandel bleibt geschlossen aber die Grossverteiler dürfen das gesamte Sortiment verkaufen – stösst bei uns und bei den Mitgliedern von imagingswiss – der Fotoverband auf Unverständnis. Die Enttäuschung und Fassungslosigkeit des KMU-Detailhandels sind spürbar. Denn: Gerade diese KMU haben mit selbst erarbeiteten Plänen gezeigt, wie sie die Öffnung gesundheitspolitisch korrekt umsetzen können. Sie legen dabei grossen Wert auf die Gesundheit der Mitarbeitenden sowie der Kundinnen und Kunden. -

Based on the ethno-symbolist approach to the study of nationalism, this thesis proposes to see the Thai nation as a result of a long process, reflecting the three-phases-model (ethnie , pre-modem and modem nation) for the potential development of a nation as outlined by Anthony Smith.
