About Emotions There are 8 primary emotions. You are born with these emotions wired into your brain. That wiring causes your body to react in certain ways and for you to have certain urges when the emotion arises. Here is a list of primary emotions: Eight Primary Emotions Anger: fury, outrage, wrath, irritability, hostility, resentment and violence. Sadness: grief, sorrow, gloom, melancholy, despair, loneliness, and depression. Fear: anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, dread, fright, and panic. Joy: enjoyment, happiness, relief, bliss, delight, pride, thrill, and ecstasy. Interest: acceptance, friendliness, trust, kindness, affection, love, and devotion. Surprise: shock, astonishment, amazement, astound, and wonder. Disgust: contempt, disdain, scorn, aversion, distaste, and revulsion. Shame: guilt, embarrassment, chagrin, remorse, regret, and contrition. All other emotions are made up by combining these basic 8 emotions. Sometimes we have secondary emotions, an emotional reaction to an emotion. We learn these. Some examples of these are: o Feeling shame when you get angry. o Feeling angry when you have a shame response (e.g., hurt feelings). o Feeling fear when you get angry (maybe you’ve been punished for anger). There are many more. These are NOT wired into our bodies and brains, but are learned from our families, our culture, and others. When you have a secondary emotion, the key is to figure out what the primary emotion, the feeling at the root of your reaction is, so that you can take an action that is most helpful. .

  • Identifying Expressions of Emotions and Their Stimuli in Text
Identifying Expressions of Emotions and Their Stimuli in Text by Diman Ghazi Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty of Engineering University of Ottawa c Diman Ghazi, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract Emotions are among the most pervasive aspects of human experience. They have long been of interest to social and behavioural sciences. Recently, emotions have attracted the attention of researchers in computer science and particularly in computational linguistics. Computational approaches to emotion analysis have also focused on various emotion modalities, but there is less effort in the direction of automatic recognition of the emotion expressed. Although some past work has addressed detecting emotions, detecting why an emotion arises is ignored. In this work, we explore the task of classifying texts automatically by the emotions expressed, as well as detecting the reason why a particular emotion is felt. We believe there is still a large gap between the theoretical research on emotions in psy- chology and emotion studies in computational linguistics. In our research, we try to fill this gap by considering both theoretical and computational aspects of emotions. Starting with a general explanation of emotion and emotion causes from the psychological and cognitive perspective, we clarify the definition that we base our work on. We explain what is feasible in the scope of text and what is practically doable based on the current NLP techniques and tools. This work is organized in two parts: first part on Emotion Expression and the second part on Emotion Stimulus.

  • Alteration of Complex Negative Emotions Induced by Music in Euthymic Patients with Bipolar Disorder
Article Alteration of complex negative emotions induced by music in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder CHOPPIN, Sabine, et al. Abstract Background Research has shown bipolar disorder to be characterized by dysregulation of emotion processing, including biases in facial expression recognition that is most prevalent during depressive and manic states. Very few studies have examined induced emotions when patients are in a euthymic phase, and there has been no research on complex emotions. We therefore set out to test emotional hyperreactivity in response to musical excerpts inducing complex emotions in bipolar disorder during euthymia. Methods We recruited 21 patients with bipolar disorder (BD) in a euthymic phase and 21 matched healthy controls. Participants first rated their emotional reactivity on two validated self-report scales (ERS and MAThyS). They then rated their music-induced emotions on nine continuous scales. The targeted emotions were wonder, power, melancholy and tension. We used a specific generalized linear mixed model to analyze the behavioral data. Results We found that participants in the euthymic bipolar group experienced more intense complex negative emotions than controls when the musical excerpts induced wonder. Moreover, patients [...] Reference CHOPPIN, Sabine, et al. Alteration of complex negative emotions induced by music in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder. Although it is used in numerous studies, the discrete model is of great importance in the Indian tradition. This study assesses two discrete interfaces for continuous rating of Hindustani classical music. The first interface, the Discrete emotion wheel (DEW) captures the range of eight aesthetic emotions relevant to Hindustani classical music and cited in Natyashastra, and the second interface, Intensity-rating emotion wheel (IEW) assesses the emotional arousal and identifies whether the additional cognitive load interferes with accurate rating. Forty-eight participants rated emotions expressed by five Western and six Hindustani classical clips. Results suggest that both the interfaces work effectively for both the music genres, and the intensity-rating emotion wheel was able to capture arousal in the clips where they show higher intensities in the dominant emotions. Implications of the tool for assessing the relation between musical structures, emotions and time are also discussed. Keywords Arousal, continuous response, discrete emotions, Hindustani classical music, interface Emotions and Their Intensity in Hindustani Classical Music Using Two Rating Interfaces Continuous assessment of music stimuli emerged as a tool in 1980s, a field dominated by self-report or post-performance ratings till then (Kallinen, Saari, Ravaja, & Laarni, 2005; EMOTIONS AND THEIR INTENSITY IN MUSIC 3 Schubert, 2001).

  • Light from a Thousand Stars: the Proper Emotion Is Wonder December 2020
The Seekers Forum Transcript Light From a Thousand Stars: The Proper Emotion is Wonder December 2020 Mark Matousek: Hello everybody and welcome to this month’s edition of The Seekers Forum, “Light From a Thousand Stars: The Proper Emotion is Wonder.” We’re going to be looking this month at the importance of wonder and awe to human survival and spiritual development. Before we begin, let’s just have a moment of silence to bring our thoughts together into the room for the next hour. Whenever you’re ready, just gently close your eyes, take a couple of deep breaths in and out through the nostrils and we’ll just sit for one minute together, please. [pause 00:00:57] After your next exhalation, gently open your eyes and come into the room and soft focus and let’s say hello to our co-host, Jay Koebele. How are you, Jay? Jay Koebele: It’s great to be here and nice to be here with everyone. Thank you. Mark: Thank you, Jay. Now science tells us that we are actually wired for wonder. Evolution has prepared us for awe, elevation, wonder, epiphany revelation, and second sight as part of our survival repertoire. Indeed, the body is primed for awe on a cellular level. For example, did you know that every morning when you open your eyes, the previous day’s top layer of vision receptor cells are literally scorched away by the entering light, exposing new cells that have never before seen the light of day, thus giving you new eyes? Or that the first sound that you hear on waking actually vibrates away the prior day’s auditory cells? Meaning that when the rooster crows you hear it with physiologically fresh ears.

3/6/2018 Hope for Healing: Miscarriage and the Dignity of the Human Body by Andrew J. Sodergren, M.S. HomePage Prof May Home Page Hope for Healing: Miscarriage and the Dignity of the Human Body Andrew J. Sodergren, M.S. Abstract This paper examines the issue of miscarriage from the perspective of the mother-child couplet. A discussion of the psychology of motherhood and miscarriage highlights the negative impact miscarriage has on the mother. Mothers must be helped to mourn the irreplaceable child lost in miscarriage. A review of Catholic teaching on the human body and dignity of the unborn emphasizes the respect owed to pre-natal human life and the bodies of embryos and fetuses who have died. Finally, it is argued that holding a funeral/burial is the best possible way to assist the mother’s grieving and to respect the deceased child. Current practices and attitudes fail to recognize either of these norms. Hope for Healing: Miscarriage and the Dignity of the Human Body Catholic bioethicists today are continually confronted with a number of pressing issues raised by the culture of death and new medical technologies: stem cell research, http://www.christendom-awake.org/pages/may/hopeforhealing.htm 1/34 3/6/2018 Hope for Healing: Miscarriage and the Dignity of the Human Body by Andrew J. The ones you hesitate to ever speak out loud, admit you have, or let anyone else know you think? Questions like: “Does God hear me when I pray?” “Does He have a plan for my life?” “Does God really have everything under control?” Questions and doubts can be unsettling if they are left unsaid. We begin to think we are alone in our doubts, and often our doubts only grow until they paralyze our faith. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship Repository WILDLIFE-INSPIRED AWE IN LEISURE-BASED LEARNING BY JONATHAN ROBERT HICKS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor William Stewart, Chair Adjunct Associate Professor Craig A. Miller Associate Professor Cary McDonald Professor Emerita Joanne Vining Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to illuminate that awe is a part of wildlife experiences and that people learn from those experiences. Previously noted in literature, these notions were evidenced in this study through quantitative and qualitative measures spanning three stages of data collection. Data collection was guided by a theoretical framework, which integrated the Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) (Kolb 2000, 1984) and the Theory of Emotional Memory (TEM) (LeDoux 2000, 1996) into what was referred to throughout this manuscript as the Wildlife Experiential Emotion Model (WEEM; see chapter two). Guided by the important work of Human Dimensions of Wildlife scholars, this model was successfully utilized to demonstrate the processes by which people experience wildlife-inspired awe. Specifically, stage one intercept interviews documented the ways in which people come to make meaning of significant experiences with wildlife. Personal reflections allowed participants to appraise or make sense of their emotional wildlife encounters, beginning a learning process evidenced through memory recall and storytelling. The stage two survey sought to identify factors that contribute to reflective understandings of wildlife-inspire awe.
