UNPACKING THE CONFLICTING IDEOLOGIES AND CULTURAL ANXIETIES IN "ORPHAN BLACK" Danielle Marie Howell A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2016 Committee: Bill Albertini, Advisor Kimberly Coates © 2016 Dani Howell All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Bill Albertini, Advisor In this project, I undertake a queer Marxist reading of the television series Orphan Black. Specifically, I investigate the portrayal of women and queer characters in order to discover the conflicting dominant and oppositional ideologies circulating in the series. Doing so allows me to reveal cultural anxieties that haunt the series even as it challenges normative power relations. I argue that while Orphan Black’s narrative subverts traditional gender roles, critiques heteronormativity, and offers sexually fluid queer characters, the series still reifies the traditionally ideal Western female body—thin, attractive, legibly gendered, and fertile. I draw on Antonio Gramsci’s theory of ideology and hegemony, Heidi Hartman’s analysis of Marxism and feminism, and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity to unpack the series’ non-normative depiction of gender and its simultaneous reliance on a stable gender binary. I frame my argument with Todd Gitlin’s understanding of hegemony’s ability to domesticate radical ideas in television. I argue that Orphan Black imagines spaces and scenarios that offer the potential to liberate women from heteronormative expectations and limit patriarchy’s harm. The series privileges a queer female collective and envisions a world where women have freedom from normative conceptions of gender and sexuality. -

Abrams* Existing legal responses to sexual assault and harassment in the military have stagnated or failed. Current approaches emphasize the prevalence of sexual assault and highlight the masculine nature of the military’s statistical composition and institutional culture. Current responses do not, however, incorporate masculinities theory to disentangle the experiences of men as a group from men as individuals. Rather, embedded within contestations of the masculine military culture is the un- stated assumption that the culture universally privileges or benefits the individual men that operate within it. This myth is harmful because it tethers masculinities to military efficacy, suppresses the costs of male violence to men, and positions women as perpetual outsiders. -

The second goal of the study is to create a model of the causes of discrimination against men. According to the model, which synthesizes administrative sciences, gender studies and memetics, gender discrimination is caused by a mental diff erentiation between men and women. This diff erentiation tends to lead to the segregation of societies into masculine and feminine activities, and to organizations and net- works which are dominated by either men or by women. -

Hegemonic Masculinity and Counter-hegemonic Feminist Discourses for Peace Abstract Utilizing a pacifist eministf position, this paper looks at the relationship between ideas of masculinity and war, militarism and peacekeeping intervention. I argue that it is necessary to revise and redefine a pacifist feminist position, especially because, from this viewpoint, the current masculinist war-prone world order may best be combated by attacking its gender biases. In this context, pacifist eministsf have often been challenged by non-feminists, but also by non-pacifist eministsf who accuse them of drawing on essentialist notions of women as peace –makers. A non-violent attack on oppressive masculinity would need to be successful in disseminating a counter-hegemonic and non-essentialist, non-violent feminist education not just in academia, but also through increased access of pacifist eministf perspectives in the media. -

MenEngage Alliance and North American MenEngage Network (NAMEN)’s Joint Response to accusations of harassment, misconduct and bullying by men within the field of engaging men and boys in gender equality 15 August 2018 It is with grave concern that we address two distinct cases of allegations of harassment, misconduct and bullying by two men, Michael Kimmel, Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and Ravi Karkara, Senior Advisor at UN Women, who are considered longstanding leaders in the field of engaging men and boys in gender equality. We acknowledge that the investigation into these cases is still in progress. However, while we await the outcomes of formal investigation processes, we believe silence and inaction is not an option. MenEngage Alliance takes a survivor-centered approach to such cases, which involves listening to and supporting survivors. We do not need to wait until someone has been formally charged or proven guilty in order to offer those who have come forward empathy and ally-ship. While the specific allegations of these cases differ significantly, we agree that these cases share key underlying factors that have become all too familiar. Namely, men in positions of power are alleged to have used and abused their influence to manipulate, coerce, bully and systematically subordinate others - which includes deeply troubling reports of sexual harassment and misconduct. The nature of these allegations is all the more concerning because the two men who are implicated have been widely regarded as leading advocates and mentors to others in our field for many years. -

Choi Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Natalie Jolly, Ph.D. School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences The intent of this thesis is to explore existing gender norms in mixed martial arts cultures. Masculinity is particularly valorized in sport, creating tension for female athletes who are forced to balance masculine norms with feminine beauty ideals. While there is a robust literature on the intersections of mixed martial arts (MMA) and masculinity, female voices are rarely heard in that literature. My research goes beyond the work of others by incorporating female voices and perspectives. Grounded in gender constructionism, my thesis addresses how both male and female MMA fighters conceive of their and others’ participation in gendered terms, and how this informs their gender identities. My thesis further examines the intersections of masculinity and gender that are readily observable within MMA, and those that are less conspicuous or go largely unnoticed. Finally, my thesis explores how norms perpetuate gender stereotypes and highlight differences, as masculine norms persist in the fighting culture. The examination of gender norms in MMA contributes to a larger body of research concerning gender roles and norms in other social contexts.
