Household of Prince George of Denmark 1680-1708 The Household of Prince George of Denmark was established in 1683-84 upon his marriage to Lady Anne, daughter of James, Duke of York, whereupon she became the Princess of Denmark. The household was paid for by a grant of £20,000 pounds per annum supplied evenly by Charles II and the Duke of York. This was to be supplemented by the Prince of Denmark’s personal estates, estimated, optimistically, to yield £17,500. In 1689 the Crown contribution rose to £50,000 per annum.1 Danes were not to be appointed, though exceptions were made for a number of the Prince’s closest confidants, in particular Christian Siegfried von Plessen, who was nevertheless forced to exercise his duties from Denmark. 1. SHR Notes and Comments A 1706 Manifesto for an Armed Rising against Incorporating Union Abstract This paper presents a draft manifesto by Robert Wylie, minister of Hamilton parish, for a popular Presbyterian rising designed to halt the ratification of incorporating union by the Scottish parliament in its 1706-07 session. The document has been preserved in Robert Wodrow’s extensive collection of papers held by the National Library of Scotland. Speaking in the name of the ‘free people’ of Scotland, the manifesto demands new elections to produce a parliament more representative of national opinion on incorporation. The new parliament would proceed to confirm the Hanoverian succession with limitations on monarchical powers. The document illustrates common arguments against incorporating union held by some Presbyterians in 1706-07 and indicates the importance of the settlement of the Hanoverian succession with limitations as an alternative to incorporating union. The document demonstrates the political activism of clergy like Wylie, acting in cooperation with opposition leaders in parliament. Recent studies have shown how religious concerns led Scottish Presbyterians to divide over the question of incorporation during the parliamentary session of 1706-07. Though incorporating union offered a means of confirming Sophia, electress of Hanover as Scotland’s successor to Queen Anne and thus sustaining the Protestant Revolution interest against the threat of a Jacobite restoration, some felt that the covenants of 1638 and 1643 demanded the preservation of the Scottish realm and parliament and made an entire union with Anglican England impossible.1 There was ferocious debate in the Commission of the General Assembly on how far the institutional church 1 Presbyterian attitudes towards incorporating union have been discussed in specialised and general studies including Colin Kidd, ‘Religious Realignment Between the Revolution and the Union’ in J. -

Pocock argues: Every one of Burke’s cardinal points, as just enumerated, can be found in Hale rebuking Hobbes, in Coke rebuking James I, or in Davies rebuking the partisans of written law;... From what sources Burke derived it, and with what elements of eighteenth-century thought and his own genius he enriched it, are questions for the specialist; but that Burke’s philosophy is in great measure a revitalization of the concept of custom and the common-law tradition may be safely asserted as part of the present study’s contentions.(1) In his essay entitled ‘Burke and the Ancient Constitution’, (2) Pocock repeats his argument that Burke’s traditionalism should be understood in the context of the common law tradition, and also that Burke was aware of this tradition. At the end of this essay he also writes: in order to explain Burke’s traditionalism, there is no need to suppose more than his continued employment and highly developed understanding of certain concepts which came from the common law (as he [Burke] recognized) and were generally in use * This essay is largely based upon the present author’s MSc dissertation submitted to University of Edinburgh in August 2009. School Resource Key characters James II was the second son of Charles I, the monarch who was executed by his own people after years of civil wars in England and Scotland. James grew up in exile in France and moved back to England when his brother Charles II was invited to take back the throne in 1685. James was born a Protestant, but converted to Catholicism in the 1660s. At first he kept it a secret because Catholics were feared and hated in England, but during the 1670s and 1680s he worked to gain religious freedoms for Catholics. His daughters, Mary and Anne, from his first marriage were brought up Protestant. But he married the Catholic Mary of Modena in 1673 and when their son James was born in 1688, people feared that England would stay Catholic and looked to the Protestant William of Orange for help. James II He fled England after the Glorious Revolution in 1688. He attempted to get Born 1633, died 1701 back his throne, but was defeated in battle in the Battle of the Boyne in King 1685–88 Ireland in 1690. He retired to France and died there in 1701, but his supporters, the Jacobites, continued to make trouble and try and put his heirs on the throne until 1746. William was the son of one of Charles I’s daughters, meaning James II was his uncle, and his wife Mary, was also his cousin. His marriage to his cousin Mary didn’t start well: she cried at the wedding. But they grew to love each other very much. -

CHAPTER SIX Roger L’Estrange and the Huguenots: Continental Protestantism and the Church of England1 Anne Dunan-Page, University of Montpellier At the end of October 1680, Roger L’Estrange disappeared from his London home. Traversing muddy roads and wintry seas, he first joined the duke of York in Edinburgh and then set sail for The Hague. There he informed Thomas Ken, the almoner of the Princess of Orange and the future bishop of Bath and Wells, that he intended to take communion at Ken’s Anglican service.2 This was one way to escape charges of crypto-catholicism.3 Another was to make himself scarce. -

English Book Owners in the Seventeenth Century: A Work in Progress Listing How much do we really know about patterns and impacts of book ownership in Britain in the seventeenth century? How well equipped are we to answer questions such as the following?: • What was a typical private library, in terms of size and content, in the seventeenth century? • How does the answer to that question vary according to occupation, social status, etc? • How does the answer vary over time? – how different are ownership patterns in the middle of the century from those of the beginning, and how different are they again at the end? Having sound answers to these questions will contribute significantly to our understanding of print culture and the history of the book more widely during this period. Our current state of knowledge is both imperfect, and fragmented. There is no directory or comprehensive reference source on seventeenth-century British book owners, although there are numerous studies of individual collectors. There are well-known names who are regularly cited in this context – Cotton, Dering, Pepys – and accepted wisdom as to collections which were particularly interesting or outstanding, but there is much in this area that deserves to be challenged. Private Libraries in Renaissance England and Books in Cambridge Inventories have developed a more comprehensive approach to a particular (academic) kind of owner, but they are largely focused on the sixteenth century. Sears Jayne, Library Catalogues of the English Renaissance, extends coverage to 1640, based on book lists found in a variety of manuscript sources. Evidence of book ownership in this period is manifested in a variety of ways, which need to be brought together if we are to develop that fuller picture.
