Mathieu Lommen Books &Printingin theNetherlands 1998 january On 16 January graphic designer Ben Bos was appointed honorary member of the bno [Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers – the Professional Association of Dutch Designers]. On this occasion a full-colour yer appeared. Bos was also the ini- tiator and rst chairman of the nago [Nederlands Archief Gra sch Ontwerpers – Dutch Graphic Designers Archive]. Treasures from the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica in Amsterdam were on view from 16 January to 21 February in the Bibliotheca Wittockiana in Brussels. [Undated press release] From 20 January to 30 March the Museum van het Boek/Museum Meermanno- Westreenianum in The Hague paid attention to the bibliophile publishing house Philip Elchers, which had been in existence for twelve and a half years. [Undated press release] On 28 January the graphic designer and publicist Fons van der Linden (b. 1923) passed away in his place of residence ’s-Hertogenbosch. An obituary by A.S.A. Struik appeared in De Boekenwereld , 144 (1998), and one by Karel F. Treebus in Quærendo, 29/4 (1999). From 29 January to 12 April there were two exhibitions on view in the Museum van het Boek/Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum in The Hague: ‘W.J. Rozendaal (1899-1971): gra sch werk’ and ‘Susanne Gruber-Heynemann: text design & typo- gra e’. Rozendaal, artist and book designer, taught drawing and painting at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague during the years 1937-60. On the occasion of this exhibition the monograph W.J. Rozendaal ( 1899-1971) (208 pp.) appeared, pub- lished by De Walburg Pers. Later in the year the museum of Glasfabriek Leerdam was to pay attention to Rozendaal as a designer of services, vases and commemo- rative plates. The exhibition on Heynemann, which was subsequently on view in the University Library of Groningen, was accompanied by the publication Susanne Heynemann, typografe (142 pp.). This book contains among other things reminiscences by the emigré Heynemann (Berlin, 1913), who is particularly known for her work for the publishers Querido and J.B. Wolters (later Wolters-Noordho V ). AYches van ptt, 1920-heden’ [Graphic persuaders. ptt posters, 1920 to the pre- sent]. Some two hundred posters were selected from the poster collection of the museum which comprises well over 2300 posters. The accompanying book of the same title ( 173 pp.) was published by Waanders and contained articles by Paul Mertz, Paul Hefting and H.J.A. Ho and. The Vormgevingsinstituut [Netherlands Design Institute] in Amsterdam commis- sioned graphic designer Marten Jongema to select contemporary Dutch work for an international poster exhibition. The thirteen posters were shown at an exhibition organized by the Salon Internationale de l’A Yche et des Arts de la rue in Paris. [Nieuwsbrief Vormgevingsinstituut January-March 1998] Jozee Brouwer (b. 1965) won the 1998 Frans de Jong Prize for her project Rietveld tegen de muur, a ‘muurkrant’ [Mural newspaper] specially designed for the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. [ De Boekenwereld , 15/4 (1999), Vormberichten , 1999, no. 1-2] february At Stroom in The Hague an exhibition of the work of graphic designer Irma Boom was on view until 21 March. [de Volkskrant 10.02.1998] On 13 February the fth Charles Nypels Award was presented to Zuzana Licko (Slovakia 1961) and Rudy VanderLans (the Netherlands 1955). They won this award for their innovative type designs, graphic design and contents of the magazine Emigre which was founded in 1984. In the goodwill series of printing o Yce Rosbeek num- ber 43 (70 pp.) was devoted to the laureates. [ de Volkskrant 17.02.1998, Vormberichten 1998 no. 4] On 18 February the Amsterdam University Library presented its project of type specimens with the publication Dutch typefounders’ specimens from the Library of the KVB and other collections in the Amsterdam University Library with histories of the rms represented (1852 items, 350 pp.). This catalogue was written and edited by John A. Lane and Mathieu Lommen, and compiled together with Johan de Zoete. It was designed by Sander Pinkse (the interior in cooperation with Gerard Unger) and Piet Gerards (binding, y-leaves, dust jacket). Issued as a joint publication of De Buitenkant and De Graaf Publishers, Dutch typefounders’ specimens appeared as the eleventh volume of the Catalogus van de Bibliotheek van de KVB . On the occasion of this publication an exhibition in the university library had been opened on 22 January, entitled ‘Van Kis tot Kisman: 4 eeuwen Nederlandse letterproeven’ [From Kis to Kisman: 4 cen- turies of Dutch type specimens], compiled by Lommen and Lane. Frits Knuf Antiquarian Booksellers issued a special list containing type specimens. The selection panel consisted of Wim Crouwel, Steven Hond, Vincent König, Rob Spee, Alwin van Steijn and Arjen Woudenberg. From the panel’s report: ‘The reason to award the prize to Pieter Brattinga is in the rst place his exemplary.
