We may convince ourselves that it is the poor who are favored. In today’s readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gifts more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that matters most. Today’s scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God’s gifts in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Las Escrituras de hoy señalan el valor de los dones de la sabiduría, la confianza en Dios y una cualidad que permite que nuestras acciones reflejen el amor de Dios que llevamos en nuestro interior. No es el oro lo que nos hace tropezar, sino el desear el oro por encima de todo lo demás. En las lecturas de la Sabiduría y Hebreos, descubrimos la fuente de los dones de Dios en nuestra vida.     The Origin and Early Development of All Saints University Parish: A Journey of Relationships and Persistence Turlock, California Introduction The following summary history report is primarily an attempt to factually record from first-hand knowledge, and verification from accessible surviving documents, the infancy and maturation of the Catholic Newman Student movement in Turlock from a tiny college student club through the planning and building of a multipurpose worship facility (1960-1999). It will be left to recent Pastoral Council members and other current parishioners to write a more complete and detailed modern history (2000-present) of this community, currently known as All Saints University Parish. The author takes complete and exclusive responsibility for the content of this publication, although he wishes to acknowledge that he received from All Saints staff and community members helpful cooperation, support and assistance with preparation and distribution of this report. Chaplain Salvador deserves much credit for the initial gentle insistence many years ago which led to production of this document. A final draft of this history report has been read by the three most recent All Saints priests, but no Community priest can be held accountable for report content or presentation. An attempt has been made to acknowledge all of those who have made a worthy effort or contribution to the foundational development of this church community. Merz Preface The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops commissioned this history in November, 2009, “to serve as an internal chronology” of the National Review Board. Its intended audience is present and future members of the Board, the Bishops’ Committee on Child and Youth Protection, and members and staff of the Conference. Because of a policy of rotating NRB members, there were no members in 2009 whose personal memories covered the entire history of the Board. Those changes, as well as appointment of new bishops and new members of the CPCYP and staff at the Conference make this history necessary. Hopefully it will be useful as an index to the people who have served on the NRB, the issues they have confronted, and their interactions with the Conference and its bishop members. The author served on the Board from October 2004 until June 2009, acquiring many personal experiences and reactions to events in the NRB history, many of which are reflected in this history, which ends with the June 2009 meeting of the Board. Nevertheless, this is not an interpretive history; the author was cautioned not to editorialize. Although this is a straight factual chronology, the author believes readers will be able to draw useful lessons from it so that the Board’s successes during its first seven years can be built upon and its less successful approaches can be avoided. As you know, it is my intention in the course of this year to reflect with you on some of the spiritual and cultural chal- lenges of the new evangelization. One of the most memorable aspects of my Pas- toral Visit to the United States was the opportunity it afforded me to reflect on America’s historical experience of religious freedom, and specifically the relationship between religion and culture. At the heart of every culture, whether perceived or not, is a consensus about the nature of reality and the moral good, and thus about the conditions for human flourishing. In America, that consensus, as enshrined in your nation’s founding documents, was grounded in a worldview shaped not only by faith but a commitment to certain ethical principles deriving from nature and nature’s God. Today that consensus has eroded significantly in the face of powerful new cultural currents which are not only directly opposed to core moral teachings of the Judeo-Christian tradition, but increasingly hostile to Christianity as such. For her part, the Church in the United States is called, in season and out of season, to proclaim a Gospel which not only proposes unchanging moral truths but proposes them precisely as the key to human happiness and social prospering (cf.
