  • Walking Tour of Harrisburg Is Both Enjoyable and Rewarding
“Creating a Sense of Place and a Healthy Community” Walking Tour Hosted by the City of Harrisburg Department of Building and Housing Development in cooperation with the Department of Parks and Recreation Stephen R. Reed, Mayor - Harrisburg City Council Welcome to Harrisburg! With pleasure, we are delighted to welcome you to Pennsylvania’s Capital City of Harrisburg and City Island. We are honored to serve as your host community and hope that your unique walking tour of Harrisburg is both enjoyable and rewarding. From Native American occupation dating back nearly 10,000 years to its earliest days as a colonial outpost, the Union Army’s largest training camp during the Civil War, and a major industrial power into the mid-Twentieth Century, or continuing today as the Heart of Pennsylvania’s focal point for commerce, government, the arts and entertainment, Harrisburg has been in the forefront of this state’s and nation’s growth for many centuries. Today, Harrisburg is considered a national role model for successful urban revitalization, with more than $2 billion in new investment realized during the current era. Our gratitude is extended to each of you for participating in today’s tour. Proper nutrition is essential to performing at one’s full capability, and the absence of proper diets for many Americans has led to a host of health and other physical problems that can severely affect one’s quality of life. Your good efforts prove that you understand these critical issues, and are willing to do something about it. For this, you have our appreciation and regard.

  • Inventing and Invoking Tradition in Holocaust Memorials
Inventing and Invoking Tradition in Holocaust Memorials New Directions in Folklore 4.2 October, 2000 Newfolk :: NDiF :: Archive :: Issue 4.2 :: Page 1 :: Page 2 Inventing and Invoking Tradition in Holocaust Memorials Simon J. Bronner Distinguished Professor of Folklore and American Studies Penn State Harrisburg This essay is an expanded revision of a presentation made at a symposium entitled "The Meaning of Things" held at the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum (Smithsonian Institution) in New York City, May 18, 1996. When ground was broken for the World War II Memorial on Veteran's Day of 2000 in Washington, D.C., a symbolic center for the nation, several speakers shared the hope that the structure about to be built would provide a sacred space that could become a backdrop for a ritual of remembrance. They hoped for the kind of ritual response that the Vietnam Memorial on the National Mall had inspired, and privately worried that the memorial would go the way of neglected sculpture for the Korean War (see Haas 1998). They hoped that the memory of a conflict in "good time" more than fifty years after the event, and thought of as "a good war," fought for a noble cause, would inspirit the memorial, indeed go beyond being symbolic to become "cultural." In ritually breaking ground, and expressing hopes and plans for memorials, especially for wars and tragedies, speakers confront a central problem of inventing and invoking tradition for public consumption. While private ceremonies for individual deaths have prescribed customs of grief, according to ethnic and regional traditions, the process of constructing memorials for the whole meant for public display, have less predictable responses.

  • Introduction
Introduction THE FOLKLOREASPECTSof names and naming have received notice in American scholarly circles only through a scattering of articles in random journals, a sprinkling of folklorists in the American Name Society, and a few onomastic specialists in the American Folklore Society. Neither the folkloristic nor the onomastic establish- ment, however, has taken any official notice of this borderline sub- ject: name studies either are lumped with "folk speech" or become "lost" in the AFS bibliographies, while folklorists must write-in their specialty for it to appear after their names in the member- ship roster of the AN S. Nor does the total number of publications or of scholars suggest that this is a significant area; only about 50 pertinent articles have appeared in the past 20 years, and the latest ANS roster, in Names, 14: 4 (December, 1966) contained but three members whose special interest was designated as "folklore." These were the present guest editor, the author of the lead article of this special issue of Names, and Professor Marie Campbell of the Uni- versity of Massachusetts. Perhaps another 18 or 20 listed members may be identified as folklorists on the basis of their publications; among them is Francis Lee Utley, who was president of the Ameri- can Name Society in 1966 and of the American Folklore Society in 1951 and 1952. With an acute awareness that Professor Utley has a far better right to wield the editorial pencil than he himself does, your special editor is grateful to the American Name Society for making this issue of Names available so that an almost invisible speciality may now manifest itself.
