  • The Death of Klinghoffer,'' Which Had Its United States Premiere in 1991 at the Academy, Six Months After Its World Premiere in Brussels
MOVIES, PERFORMING ARTS/WEEKEND DESK NEXT WAVE FESTIVAL REVIEW; Giving Voice To an Act Of Terror By ANTHONY TOMMASINI Published: December 5, 2003, Friday All those entering the Brooklyn Academy of Music on ARTICLE TOOLS Wednesday night had to empty their pockets and pass Printer-Friendly Format through metal detectors set up right inside the four doors to the spacious lobby. The reason behind the heightened Most E-Mailed Articles security was the opening-night performance of John Adams's opera ''The Death of Klinghoffer,'' which had its United States premiere in 1991 at the academy, six months after its world premiere in Brussels. The opera has come back to the academy in an arresting new production, with Robert Spano conducting the Brooklyn Philharmonic, that will be repeated tonight and tomorrow night at the Howard Gilman Opera House. Few works in recent years have ignited more controversy than this audacious, multilayered opera about the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro, an Italian cruise ship, by a group of Palestinian terrorists, which resulted in the brutal murder of Leon Klinghoffer, a disabled American Jew. World events have intersected with each presentation of this work. As the critic Michael Steinberg points out in his liner notes for the 1992 Nonesuch recording, Mr. Adams began composing ''The Death of Klinghoffer'' in 1989, when the United States was lavishing support on Saddam Hussein. By the time of its 1991 premiere, he adds, America was ''dropping 'smart bombs' down Baghdad ventilator shafts.'' Just months after 9/11, the Boston Symphony Orchestra canceled a series of performances of excerpts from the opera, including the ''Chorus of the Exiled Palestinians,'' in deference to a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus whose husband was on one of the planes that was crashed into the twin towers.

Spanish police arrested the apparent ringleader Thursday. Syrian-born Monzer al Kassar has been described by the embassy as an "international weapons trafficker." His co-defendants, Tareq Mousa al Ghazi and Luis Felipe Moreno Godoy, were arrested Thursday in Romania, the embassy said in a statement Friday. "Kassar and his co-defendants are accused of conspiring to sell surface-to-air missile systems (SAMs), rocket-propelled grenade launchers (RPGs), thousands of machine guns and millions of rounds of ammunition to the FARC," the embassy said. An indictment from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York "charges the men with conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist organization, conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and officials, and conspiracy to acquire and use an anti-aircraft missile," the embassy said. "Kassar and Moreno are also charged with money laundering," the statement said. Al Ghazi has worked with Kassar for about 30 years, brokering weapons, according to the indictment, which was viewed by CNN.

Liput∗ ∗ Copyright c 1985 by the authors. Fordham International Law Journal is produced by The Berke- ley Electronic Press (bepress). http://ir.lawnet.fordham.edu/ilj An Analysis of the Achille Lauro Affair: Towards an Effective and Legal Method of Bringing International Terrorists to Justice Andrew L. Liput Abstract This Note will propose five steps towards establishing an effective method of bringing terror- ists to justice. Part I of this Note will detail the facts surrounding the Achille Lauro incident. Part II will discuss the laws governing extradition, including the obligations of Egypt and the United States arising under the United States-Egypt Extradition Treaty, the Convention Against the Tak- ing of Hostages, and the doctrine of mala captus bene delentus. Part III will also discuss the international community’s historical inability to define terrorism. Part III will examine the legal precedent for acts of abduction. Part IV details the criticism of the use of abduction as an alter- native to extradition, and examines the threat abduction poses to the international legal system, which depends upon voluntary compliance to be effective. AN ANALYSIS OF THE ACHILLE LAURO AFFAIR: TOWARDS AN EFFECTIVE AND LEGAL METHOD OF BRINGING INTERNATIONAL TERRORISTS TO JUSTICE INTRODUCTION On October 10, 1985 United States Navy fighter planes intercepted an Egyptian commercial aircraft' and forced it to land at a North Atlantic Treaty Organization 2 (NATO) airfield in Sigonella, Italy.

VIOLETTING THROUGH AUGUST’S END (OR THE SUNSET IN WATER, THE CARILLON-CHIME IN SQUARE): AN ORIGINAL CHAMBER OPERA AND A CRITICAL ESSAY ON THE TRAJECTORY OF AMERICAN MINIMALIST OPERA James Joseph Doyle Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS December 2014 APPROVED: Joseph Klein, Major Professor and Division Chair Peter Mondelli, Minor Professor Andrew May, Committee Member Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music James Scott, Dean of the College of Music Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Doyle, James Joseph. Violetting through August’s End (or the sunset in water, the carillon-chime in square): An Original Chamber Opera and a Critical Essay on the Trajectory of American Minimalist Opera. Master of Arts (Composition), December 2014, 130 pp., 35 figures, bibliography, 37 titles. When the dust settles, John Adams’s Nixon in China and Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach may stand as the most important operas of the latter twentieth century. The critical essay portion of this thesis examines the trajectory of minimalist opera, from its beginnings with Glass’s Einstein on the Beach through the more romantic operas of John Adams, Steve Reich’s multimedia opera The Cave, David Lang’s musical-influenced The Difficulty of Crossing a Field, and finally the post-minimalist operas currently being staged by young composer Nico Muhly. It examines the differences between the more abstract trajectory established by the early Glass operas and the plot driven trajectory established by operas more commonly associated with John Adams, most significantly Nixon in China.
