Thus, when Peter tries to [email protected] deter Jesus from going to the Cross to fulfill the Father’s Child protection and safety coordinator will, our Lord calls him a “stumbling block” (Mt 16:23). Consider the Church’s sad history with abusive Ginny Beauchamp, Records Manager priests and negligent bishops. We describe such men not [email protected] only as criminal, perverse, and deceitful, but also as Sacramental records, baptisms, registrations, address changes scandalous. Their words, actions, and inactions were and room reservations villainous and for that reason created an obstacle to the truth of the Gospel. They are scandals because they block people Judy Burke, Receptionist from coming to the faith. [email protected] Now, we typically think of a scandal as something Volunteer Coordinators public and shocking. But that’s not necessarily so. If a [email protected] notoriously bad man does something commonly known as wicked, there is no scandal. We all see it for what it is: a bad Rich Blickendorfer, Business Manager man doing bad things. No one is misled. But when an [email protected] apparently good man makes what is evil seem good, then people are misled and – whether they realize it or not – are Kara Rider, Accounting Specialist scandalized. [email protected] With this in mind, I feel obligated to clarify the Church’s teachings in contrast to the example of the now Kathleen Anderson, Director of Development most prominent Catholic in the United States, [email protected] President-elect Joe Biden (whom one gossip columnist shamelessly dubbed the “Catholic-in-Chief”). Many of his Duane Hyland, Communications Specialist [email protected] policy proposals are matters of prudential judgment on which good people can disagree. Unfortunately, others Anne Rohall-Andrade, St. James Disability involve the promotion of intrinsic evils affecting the very Inclusion Committee Liaison foundations of society: namely, the right to life and the truth of marriage. [email protected] President-elect Biden strongly advocates legalized 202-841-3489 abortion. He pledged to make Roe v. Wade the law of the land in the event that it is overturned by the Supreme Court. Music Ministry He recently endorsed federal funding for abortion and at the Don Carolina, Director same time promised to restore federal funding to Planned [email protected] Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the country. The danger is that some might take President-elect Youth Ministry Biden’s example to mean that one can both profess the Fr. Steven Oetjen Catholic Faith and advocate legalized abortion. In fact, these [email protected] two things are diametrically opposed. It is a grave evil and contrary to the Catholic Faith to draft, enact, and enforce Convent laws that give up innocent human life to destruction. 101 N. Spring Street, Falls Church, VA 22046 The same holds true for the President-elect’s 703-532-2388 support for “gay marriage.” When this was still a legal Sister Mary Sue Carwile, IHM, Superior question, he advocated its legalization and himself officiated at a gay wedding. Again, it must be clarified that his words If you’ve moved, changed a and actions in this regard contradict the Church’s perennial phone number, or e-mail address, need to register with teaching. Marriage is only the permanent and faithful union the parish, or would like to subscribe to of a man and a woman. Constant Contacts, Since the 2020 campaign is over and Biden has let the rectory staff know so been confirmed as President-elect, it should be clear that this we can update your records. is not intended as a political statement. Rather, it is simply to [email protected] clarify the Church’s saving doctrine in the face of a misleading, and therefore scandalous, example.
