  • Cnn International: Why We Need It
CNN INTERNATIONAL: WHY WE NEED IT After the sweat and grime of a day in Cairo, nothing feels better than a good shower in a fine hotel and the comforting presence of CNN International on the television screen. The business traveler in Johannesburg, and the vacationer in Jakarta, both share the ability to bring the world into their hotel rooms via Ted Turner’s least appreciated and most significant television achievement. CNN International may be the most important television network in the world. That is because it is the only network that tries to cover the world. All of it . Michael Jordan’s heroics on the basketball court are combined with Dortmond’s success on the soccer field, as well as the exploits of the Indian Rugby team. This is a network that tries to put the planet in perspective. The United States is seen as a part, not the whole. The relationship of world trade and commerce is presented in a clear, meaningful manner. It isn’t just Wall Street that one hears about, all of the world’s key markets are treated, almost equally, by CNN anchors based in Europe. The CNN Asian Business Report is worth the price of admission. I have, during my travels, become a fan of this network, wishing that it were available in the States. How valuable, I’ve often thought, it would be if our high school geography and government instructors could have students tuned in at home to the world is an unbiased way. How wonderful to know that the weather report will include draught in portions of sub-Sahara Africa, as though that portion of the world, and the people who inhabit it, actually matter.

Burke 1 Women Representation on CNN and Fox News Ryan Burke April 1st, 2018 PLS 4600 Research question: What difference does a political bias matter when analyzing how CNN and Fox News portray women’s issues, the number of women guests on their shows, and how much airtime women receive. Hypothesis: My hypothesis is that both networks will have relatively low coverage on women’s issues and guests on the show will be predominately male, but I do hypothesize that CNN will have a higher yield of women as guests on the show. Burke 2 Introduction: Politics is often associated as a bad word. “Playing Politics” is stigmatized as playing dirty and cheap and in association with being corrupt. In 2018, politics have been so sharply polarized and rhetoric from both sides of the aisle have been divisive to energize their bases.

  • Media Ownership Chart
In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly . In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation. In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly , shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth. Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library White House Communications Agency (WHCA): Videotapes of Public Affairs, News, and Other Television Broadcasts, 1973-77 WHCA selectively created, or acquired, videorecordings of news and public affairs broadcasts from the national networks CBS, NBC, and ABC; the public broadcast station WETA in Washington, DC; and various local station affiliates. Program examples include: news special reports, national presidential addresses and press conferences, local presidential events, guest interviews of administration officials, appearances of Ford family members, and the 1976 Republican Convention and Ford-Carter debates. In addition, WHCA created weekly compilation tapes of selected stories from network evening news programs. Click here for more details about the contents of the "Weekly News Summary" tapes All WHCA videorecordings are listed in the table below according to approximate original broadcast date. The last entries, however, are for compilation tapes of selected television appearances by Mrs. Ford, 1974-76. The tables are based on WHCA’s daily logs. “Tape Length” refers to the total recording time available, not actual broadcast duration. Copyright Notice: Although presidential addresses and very comparable public events are in the public domain, the broadcaster holds the rights to all of its own original content. This would include, for example, reporter commentaries and any supplemental information or images. • Submission on Senate Enquiry Into Media Diversity in Australia The
Submission on Senate enquiry into media diversity in Australia The state of media diversity, independence and reliability in Australia and the impact that this has on public interest journalism and democracy. DATE: 6TH DECEMBER 2020 MY BACKGROUND I am a retired business professional who has worked in the information technology and information industry all my working life. My roles have included technical, management, account management, regional sales management and worldwide product marketing. I have taken an interest is current affairs all of my life and am very cognisant of the technical capabilities of the internet and social media. MY SUBMISSION The greatest change to the media landscape in Australia over recent years is the influence of the internet and online media and advertising and the commensurate fall in advertising revenue in the traditional masthead newspapers. The arrival of Google, Facebook, Twitter and other social media has changed the way users explore news, current affairs and other content of interest. The operational model of social media is to fund their business through advertising which extracts large sources of revenue from traditional media. This results in the need for commercial media to cut costs, change their business model, introduce paywalls requiring subscription to access media content, and merge into larger conglomerates. The other major media providers in Australia are the publicly funded Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and SBS. The internet and social media has not affected their funding source and has in fact increased their reach. The ABC receives over $1 Billion annually and is forever complaining about cuts, be they cuts in real terms or simply through a lack of inflation indexed cost increases.

Case 1:17-cv-02268 Document 1 Filed 11/01/17 Page 1 of 10 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA UNITED STATES OF AMERICA United States Department of Justice Antitrust Division 450 Fifth Street, N.W., Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20530, Plaintiff, v. ENTERCOM COMMUNICATIONS CORP. 401 E. City Avenue Suite 809 Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004, and CBS CORPORATION 51 W. 52nd Street New York, NY 10019, Defendants. COMPLAINT The United States of America brings this civil action to enjoin the proposed acquisition of CBS Radio, Inc. by Entercom Communications Corporation, and to obtain other equitable relief. The acquisition likely would substantially lessen competition for the sale of radio advertising to advertisers targeting English-language listeners in the Boston, Sacramento, and San Francisco Designated Market Areas (“DMAs”), in violation of Section 7 of the Clayton Act, 15 U.S.C. § 18. The United States alleges as follows: Case 1:17-cv-02268 Document 1 Filed 11/01/17 Page 2 of 10 I. NATURE OF THE ACTION 1. Pursuant to an Agreement and Plan of Merger dated February 2, 2017, between Entercom, CBS Radio, Inc. and CBS Corporation, Entercom agreed to acquire CBS Radio in a Reverse Morris Trust transaction valued at over $1.6 billion. CBS Radio is a subsidiary of CBS Corporation. 2. Entercom and CBS Radio own and operate broadcast radio stations in various locations throughout the United States, including multiple stations in Boston, Massachusetts, Sacramento, California, and San Francisco, California. Entercom and CBS Radio compete head- to-head for the business of local and national companies that seek to advertise on English- language broadcast radio stations in these three DMAs.
