    ANGOLA FOOD SECURITY UPDATE July 2003 Highlights The food security situation continues to improve in parts of the country, with the overall number of people estimated to need food assistance reduced by four percent in July 2003 relieving pressure on the food aid pipeline. The price of the least-expensive food basket also continues to decline after the main harvest, reflecting an improvement in access to food. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the results of both the latest nutritional surveys as well as the trend analysis on admissions and readmissions to nutritional rehabilitation programs indicate a clear improvement in the nutritional situation of people in the provinces considered at risk (Benguela, Bie, Kuando Kubango). However, the situation in Huambo and Huila Provinces still warrants some concern. Household food stocks are beginning to run out just two months after the main harvest in the Planalto area, especially for the displaced and returnee populations. In response to the current food crisis, relief agencies in Angola have intensified their relief efforts in food insecure areas, particularly in the Planalto. More than 37,000 returnees have been registered for food assistance in Huambo, Benguela, Huila and Kuando Kubango. The current food aid pipeline looks good. Cereal availability has improved following recent donor contributions of maize. Cereal and pulse projections indicate that total requirements will be covered until the end of October 2003. Since the planned number of beneficiaries for June and July 2003 decreased by four percent, it is estimated that the overall availability of commodities will cover local food needs until end of November 2003.

    98 AFRICAN MUSIC SOCIETY JOURNAL MUSICAL BOWS IN SOUTH-WESTERN ANGOLA, 1965 by GERHARD KUBIK Musical bows are frequently seen in south-western Angola among populations which speak Humbi, Handa and related languages. During a week's stay in the area of Quilengues and Dinde, northeast of Sa da Bandeira, in 1965, I was able to collect some data on bows and make tape recordings and 8 mm. shots of some of their varieties. Area Characteristics The people settled in south-western Angola mostly have a mixed economy based on animal husbandry (cattle) and agriculture. In 1965 women in particular were almost exclusively seen in traditional clothing and hair-style, using olukula, a red dye-stuff, and beads. This south-western culture area stretches as far as the Kuvangu (Cubango, Okavango) river in the east, and to the south into parts of Namibia. Music and dance are distinct stylistically from the rest of Angola, compared with the Lunda/Chokwe music in the east or with the Kongo musical culture in the north. In some of its man­ ifestations it reminds the observer of Hima/Tutsi influenced regions in Ruanda, Burundi, south-western Uganda and parts of western Tanzania, especially as far as choral singing is concerned. Vocal style and motional patterns are often rather divergent from what is known in west-central African music. This is obvious as far as the Herero and Ambo are concerned, but it is also apparent in much Humbi and Handa music, for example in such Humbi men's dances as chitita. It is not easy to account for this historically, due to the lack of sources about migration and culture contact in earlier centuries.

SIL makes diligent efforts to identify and acknowledge sources and to obtain appropriate permissions wherever possible, acting in good faith and on the best information available at the time of publication Abstract This survey was conducted in the west and central parts of Huíla Province in south-western Angola, specifically in the communities of Kakwa, Mupembati, Derruba, Mapunda, Mume and Hupa. The main focus of this study was the local varieties of !Xun ([vaj] and [knw]), part of a northern Ju macrolanguage that is spoken by San communities in the provinces of Huíla, Kuando Kubango and Cunene. The main purpose of this research was to ascertain the number and location of distinct linguistic variants spoken by the San population in Huíla Province in order to inform potential language development efforts. Language mapping exercises were facilitated in five communities to identify neighbouring speech varieties and discover the relationship between them. The results of this study point to the existence of two major variants of !Xun in Huíla Province. In spite of the linguistic differences, the San in this province have a highly cohesive group identity. The use of !Xun is restricted to the domain of the family and !Xun-speaking neighbours.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15553/ c2021v761a13 The Portuguese naturalist Joaquim José da Silva (c. 1755 – 1810) was sent to Angola in the late 18 th century to collect natural history specimens, as part of the “viagens philosophicas”, a series of expeditions funded by the Portuguese state to its overseas territories. Silva arrived in Angola in 1783 and remained in the country until his death 27 years later. An account of Silva’s life and activities is provided. His travel itineraries in Angola are mapped and a list of his collections that could be located is presented. The little-known expedition to the Cunene River in which he participated is discussed. It was the first expedition to the interior of Angola during which plants were collected for deposition in a herbarium. His plant collections are recorded in the literature as numbering over 200 specimens that are held in the Herbarium of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris (P), after they were removed from Lisbon, Portugal, by Étienne Geoffroy St. Hilaire (1772 – 1844) during the Napoleonic War, in 1808. The Silva collections served as original material for describing at least 24 names.
