  • Player Pairs Valuation in Ice Hockey
Player pairs valuation in ice hockey Dennis Ljung Niklas Carlsson Patrick Lambrix Link¨opingUniversity, Sweden Abstract. To overcome the shortcomings of simple metrics for evalu- ating player performance, recent works have introduced more advanced metrics that take into account the context of the players' actions and per- form look-ahead. However, as ice hockey is a team sport, knowing about individual ratings is not enough and coaches want to identify players that play particularly well together. In this paper we therefore extend earlier work for evaluating the performance of players to the related problem of evaluating the performance of player pairs. We experiment with data from seven NHL seasons, discuss the top pairs, and present analyses and insights based on both the absolute and relative ice time together. Keywords: Sports analytics · Data mining · Player valuation. 1 Introduction In the field of sports analytics, many works focus on evaluating the performance of players. A commonly used method to do this is to attribute values to the different actions that players perform and sum up these values every time a player performs these actions. These summary statistics can be computed over, for instance, games or seasons. In ice hockey, common summary metrics include the number of goals, assists, points (assists + goals) and the plus-minus statistics (+/-), in which 1 is added when the player is on the ice when the player's team scores (during even strength play) and 1 is subtracted when the opposing team scores (during even strength). More advanced measures are, for instance, Corsi and Fenwick1. However, these metrics do not capture the context of player actions and the impact they have on the outcome of later actions.

  • Dobber's 2010-11 Fantasy Guide
DOBBER’S 2010-11 FANTASY GUIDE DOBBERHOCKEY.COM – HOME OF THE TOP 300 FANTASY PLAYERS I think we’re at the point in the fantasy hockey universe where DobberHockey.com is either known in a fantasy league, or the GM’s are sleeping. Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Any updates beyond this original release will be in bold blue.

Researchers have developed a variety of advanced statistics to assist general managers and coaches in evaluating player actions. These advanced statistics fail to account for the context in which an action occurs or to look ahead to the long-term effects of an action. I apply the Markov Game formalism to play-by-play events recorded in the National Hockey League to develop a novel approach to valuing player actions.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips May 6, 2021 Sabres organist Curtis Cook plays empty arena, strikes chord with fans By Jason Wolf The Buffalo News May 6, 2021 Curtis Cook wore his blue Buffalo Sabres jersey as he sat in Section 120 before the team’s home finale Tuesday at KeyBank Center, where he placed his hands upon the keys of the Lowrey organ, its rich tones resonating throughout the empty arena. “As an organist, you kind of feed off and judge the situation by how the crowd is reacting, depending on what’s happening on the ice,” Cook said. “So not having that reaction was weird. That’s for sure. I was playing rallies and responding to them myself by using a drum sound instead of having people respond to me. “But I think, ultimately, I’m sitting there at the organ and doing everything I normally do during a game, which is going, ‘Yeah!’ or ‘Aww, c’mon,’ as a fan myself. So I just sort of tapped into my own energy to try to bring the music to people at home.” Cook, 27, has played the organ at every Sabres home game this season, nearly all of them without fans in attendance, yet found a way to strike a chord with his audience. The Williamsville North High School and Niagara County Community College graduate has delighted crowds for more than a decade, since he began playing at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Clarence, a gig that began with the self-taught 15-year-old taking hymn requests from the congregation.
