Karl Rahner and Liberation Theology
KARL RAHNER AND LIBERATION THEOLOGY Jon Sobrino URING THE 1970s, A NEW CHURCH AND A NEW THEOLOGY arose in DLatin America. This article is a personal reflection on what Karl Rahner has meant for me in that context, though I hope that what I say will apply to liberation theology more broadly. I write out of the life-experience in El Salvador that has led me to read with new eyes the theology I had previously studied, in which Rahner’s work was a very important element. I am also writing out of my close personal and intellectual relationship with Ignacio Ellacuría, Rahner’s student in Innsbruck between 1958 and 1962. On account of his defence of faith and justice, Ellacuría, as many will know, was murdered on 16 November 1989, along with five other Jesuits and two female workers from the university in which he taught. But we should remember that Ellacuría was not just Rahner’s pupil. He took forward important ideas in Rahner’s theology, as he sought to express them in his own historical situation and in a way appropriate for the world of the poor. This article begins with an account of Rahner’s attitude towards the new things that were happening ecclesially and theologically in Latin America during the last years of his life. Then I shall try to explore Rahner’s influence on liberation theology. The Demands of a New Situation In an interview he gave to a Spanish magazine shortly before his death, Rahner was asked what he thought about the current state of the Church. -

ABSTRACT The encyclicals and speeches of Pope John Paul II placed solidarity at the very center of the Catholic social tradition and contemporary Christian ethics. This disserta- tion analyzes the historical development of solidarity in the Church’s encyclical tradition, and then offers an examination and comparison of the unique contributions of John Paul II and the Jesuit theologian Jon Sobrino to contemporary understandings of solidarity. Ultimately, I argue that understanding solidarity as spiritual exercise integrates the wis- dom of John Paul II’s conception of solidarity as the virtue for an interdependent world with Sobrino’s insights on the ethical implications of Christian spirituality, orthopraxis, and a commitment to communal liberation. -

Beaches, starringBette Midler, was the day's discussion subject. Students milled about the audito rium, many in Levis and Reeboks. With a Coke and popcorn in hand, I felt as close to home as a foreigner can feel in El Salvador. EntreAmigos-"Among Friends" is how the movie title was translated into Spanish. Readers may be famil iar with the plot: two young girls meet by chance in California and build a friendship that stretches to lew York and lasts for life. When the lights came on, a tall man with a long greying beard took his place at the front of the class. He spoke in a deep raspy voice. "What does it mean to be friends?" he asked paternally. "What does it mean to have a friendship?" But the discussion soon took its own track. "What is the meaning of friendship," asked one woman, "in the midst ofwar?" RESUMEN 1. El 16 de noviembre de 1989 la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (en adelante "la Comisión" o "la CIDH") recibió de la organización no gubernamental Américas Watch (en adelante "Americas Watch" o "los peticionarios") una petición en la que se denuncia la violación por parte de la República de El Salvador (en adelante el "Estado salvadoreño", el "Estado" o "El Salvador") de la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos (en adelante la "Convención Americana") en perjuicio de seis sacerdotes jesuitas y dos mujeres ejecutadas extrajudicialmente por agentes del Estado. Conforme a la denuncia, los hechos ocurrieron en la madrugada de ese mismo día, en la residencia de los jesuitas ubicada en el predio de la Universidad Centroamericana "José Simeón Cañas" (en adelante "la UCA") en San Salvador. Los sacerdotes jesuitas eran el Rector de la UCA, Padre Ignacio Ellacuría, de 59 años; el Vicerector, Padre Ignacio Martín Baró, de 47 años; el Director del Instituto de Derechos Humanos de la UCA, Padre Segundo Montes, de 53 años, fundador del Socorro Jurídico Cristiano "Oscar Arnulfo Romero" y presidente del Instituto de Derechos Humanos (IDHUCA) de la misma universidad, y los profesores Armando López, Joaquín López y López y Juan Ramón Moreno. Paying the Price: Ignacio Ellacuría and the Murdered Jesuits of El Salvador
FOREWORD I remember the moment when I learned of Ignacio Ellacuría’s murder as vividly as I do the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the death of Ernesto “Che” Guevara. This, I suspect, pigeonholes me as a member of a certain class and generation of Latin Americans. This cultural identity may also explain my reaction upon hearing the news—from a Guatemalan diplomat, in the ornate Council Chamber of the Pan-American Union in Washington, D.C. What shot into my mind were the words of the fascist general Millin Astray at a rally during the Spanish Civil War: “¡Viva la Muerte! ¡Abajo la Inteligencia! “ As the U.N. secretary-general’s representative, I devoted the better part of 1990 and 1991 to conducting the negotiations between the government of El Salvador and the Frente Farubundo Martí para la Liberución Nacional (FMLN) that culminated in the comprehensive peace accord signed on January 16, 1992 at Chapultepec Castle, in Mexico City. The negotiations had an ambitious, four-fold purpose: to end the armed conflict, promote democratization, guarantee unrestricted respect for human rights, and reunify Salvadoran society. El Salvador has come a long way since then. As part of a radical reform involving unprecedented constitutional amendments, the Salva- doran armed forces have been restricted to defense from external threats, and deprived of their previous roles in public security matters and as the ultimate arbiter of national political life. 'Be a Patriot: Kill a Priest'
‘BE A PATRIOT: KILL A PRIEST’ Michael Campbell-Johnston The slogan that gives this article its title, which was daubed on the walls of El Salvador’s capital during its civil war, took on a terrible actuality when the entire Jesuit staff of the University of Central America, except Jon Sobrino, who happened to be abroad, were murdered. Who were these priests? Why were they killed? And what is their legacy? The man who was at that time Jesuit superior of the British province, and was himself in El Salvador for three years before being called to London, answers these questions. This article was originally published in the British Catholic weekly, The Tablet, a few days after the murders.1 N SOME WAYS THE SIX JESUITS who were killed in El Salvador last I week were typical of the other 65 working in the country, and of Jesuits anywhere else for that matter. Five of them had been sent to Central America as ‘missionaries’ from Spain during the early years of their training. Ignacio Ellacuría left his native Vizcaya as a second-year novice at the age of eighteen. THE JESUIT MARTYRS OF EL SALVADOR The six Jesuits who were killed by a military death squad on the campus of the Jesuit University of El Salvador (UCA) on November 16 th 20 years ago were typical of many of the others working in the country at the time. Five had been sent to Central America as “missionaries” from Spain during the early years of their training. Ignacio Ellacuría left his native Vizcaya as a second-year novice at the age of 18. During the 40 years he lived and worked in the region, he became identified with its people and problems. Like missionaries elsewhere, he adopted local citizenship. The same was true for Segundo Montes, superior of the small community where they lived, and for Ignacio Mártin-Baró, at 47 the youngest of the group. The other two Spaniards had mainly worked outside El Salvador, in one of the other five countries which make up the Jesuit Province of Central America. Amando López had been rector of the Central American University in Managua, Nicaragua, from 1979 to 1982 and had only been teaching in the theology faculty at the UCA for six years. Juan Ramón Moreno was an even more recent newcomer from Nicaragua where he had edited Diakonía, a bi-monthly review of spirituality. Before that he had been novice master in Panama of the then vice-province from 1968 t0 1973. The exception was Joaquín López y López, at 71 the oldest member of the group, who was born and bred in El Salvador. For many years he taught in the Jesuit secondary school in San Salvador, the Externado San José. -
