  • 200), and Don Schumacher's 7.38 Stardust 'Cuda
In truth it began on Wednesday, but ignorance is bliss, and Courtesy nhra.com cruising at 625mph almost 7-miles high in a smooth-as-silk Air New Zealand 777, sipping champagne and rewinding my mind back through earlier visits to California I was more than just blissfully unaware! First came a mini-mind-movie on the 2nd Manufacturers Funny Car Championships held at Orange County International Raceway in 1968, a track where Gene words & photos mike collins Snow’s 205.46mph "Rambunctious" Charger (first AA/FC over 200), and Don Schumacher’s 7.38 Stardust ‘Cuda held the records at the first US race I’d covered, happily in the UK, as images of 24 fuel coupes were followed rapidly by a flashing title “Fog Foils Funnies at OCIR!” Actually, it was said that the fog “rolled in,” and there’s a fog monster “rolling” down into the valley like a run-a-way juggernaut to obliterate the forest in seconds! Not joking folks, shortly later another fog monster rolled out of nowhere on US395 to engulf my wagon! Cruising blind for almost a few hundred feet was not much fun - imagine being hit by one at 200mph and it’s easy to understand the race being called! Then it rained before a 3rd attempt saw the race dominated by Mopar; Snowman was fastest at 204.08 and Rich Siroonian’s 7.48 quickest in Big John Mazmanian’s ‘Cuda and Team Mopar won the Manufacturers title. Their low ET cars raced for the big buck$ in the final with a 7.50 putting Don Schumacher next to Siroonian who made Image found on E-Bay, two smokey burnouts to Schumacher’s three.

October 22, 2009 A Storied Rivalry Put Drag Racing on the Map By DAVE CALDWELL ONE day in 1964, Ed Donovan, a drag-racing pioneer who was known as the Mole, came up with a nickname for Tom McEwen, his lead-footed driver. There was not much money in drag racing then — winners were often given a $100 savings bond, plus free parts and oil — but every hotshot had a nickname. One of McEwen’s top funny-car rivals was Don Prudhomme, a lanky driver from Southern California who was so cobra-quick off the starting line that he was known as the Snake. So Donovan tagged McEwen the Mongoose, a mammal that seizes and kills venomous snakes. Their match races became genuine showdowns. “This wasn’t rasslin’ or anything fake like that, and that’s what made it so popular,” Prudhomme said in a recent telephone interview from his office in Vista, Calif. “We just wanted to beat each other.” Because the rivalry grew between the two drivers — McEwen in his Plymouth Duster, Prudhomme in his Plymouth Barracuda — the sport changed. In 1970, McEwen talked Mattel into producing 1:64 scale Snake and Mongoose cars as part of its Hot Wheels die-cast toy line — and into becoming drag racing’s first sponsor outside the automobile industry.

Mongoo$e and Scott, gone but not forgotten... CCaallliiifffoorrrnniiiaa ddrrreeaammiiinngg......... wwoorrrddsss & & p phhootttoosss mmiiikkee c ccoolllllliiinnsss Photo by Being privy to this powerful Saturday afternoon Wojtek warm-up on at the 2018 FIA Finals made me realise just how powerful today’s Top Fuel cars With thanks to Tommi, Anita and the gang, and to the young lady who used are, especially when I noticed Anita’s two-handed L’Oréal shampoo, “Ei ongolmia!” grip on the brake lever, recalling many times in earlier days, when far less potent fuelers jumped off jack stands! The sweet taste of NitroPower made me realise just how lucky I was to be here and then mcPix thought you might enjoy a peek behind the nitro fog! And also see my last shot before having to leave to catch my spaceship, with Tommi and crew still busy just prior to Anita’s stunning 4.004 half pass on Friday night It was while looking at these two images on the way home (and even more so after Wojtek sent me his power-filled shot of Anita’s thundering 3.87 at 312.44mph from Sunday’s first round that Tommi was tuning for at left!), that I began to think about going to Pomona! In fact later while chillin’ with a cold Bud, my mind took me back in time to my first personal Pomona memories from 1967 when Billy the Kid’s pal Hawaiian Henry gifted me some photos he’d taken there the year before, including these rare shots of Big Daddy’s only red fueler, the Snake’s B&M Torkmaster Special and the legendary Hemi Cuda - great clip, replay from the start! Notice there’s Mongoo$e missing from Tom McEwen’s name on the door – soon to be repainted! Pomona’s Winternats in 1966 - the first NHRA national event Mongoo$e and Snake raced at – Don Prudhomme’s first win as an AAFD owner driver with a 7.59 to a 7.69.

IPMS ORANGE COUNTY Newsletter – January 2019 Volume 27 # 1 Southern California’s Premier Model Club The President’s Column By David Frederick “Happy New Year: Changes for 2019” As a look upon the 2018 in review, we have several changes that had to be overcome. The first change to OrangeCon was the new challenge coin trophies. Wood trophies which In This Issue require a lot of member participation for assembly over the last ten years, was replaced with the challenge coins which Table of Contents Page has been received well by most modelers. The second US Navy Reference Photo 3 challenge was the OrangeCon venue. California State Meeting Time and Place 4 University has imposed a NO CASH policy from the new Monthly Contest Themes 5 administration that has taken over the student union center. Financials and Contest Theme 7 Unknown at the time was that we were the first group IPMS USA Membership 8 selected to make this change and tried to comply with the OC Membership Form 9 new unwritten rules. Having determined the day of the Contest Table and Results 10 event no cash rules would not work with the facility we Contest Winning Photos 16 quickly reverted to the way we always conducted Water, Ore, Sweat and Fortune 20 OrangeCon. I often wonder if the current renters of the Lions Drag Strip Pt 1 23 Titan Student Union would have to comply with the new Tanks Again Military Tour 44 rules and how do they manage. The California State News From The Deep Frozen 46 Fullerton administration stated that our type of event would Spindizzies and Tether Cars 47 not make sense with the new cash policy, so the IPMS board Spitfires in the Pacific 47 has spent the last few months looking at prospective venues Flying History Day P-51 51 for 2019 OrangeCon.

OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE OFFICIAL DIRECTORY PARTNER OFFICIAL EVENT SOUVENIRS BUILDING T July 11-13, 2014 • Carlisle, PA elcome to the 24th edition of the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals! Time Wreally does fly. It was seven years ago (2007) that I sat down to write my first welcome column for the event guide and a lot has changed in that time. We all watched Chrysler become independent from Daimler, get bought by Cerberus, file for bankruptcy and then get bought by Fiat. Crazy times! At the 2006 Chrysler Nationals, Chrysler announced that they would build the Challenger in 2008 and we had eight of them at the show that year. The following year that number jumped to nearly 100 and last year there were more than 260 “new” Challengers here! Since this show was built around the classic Mopars you are probably wondering why I’ve brought these new cars to your attention. What’s impressive is that while all of these late model Challengers, Chargers, Magnums, 300s and Darts have grown in attendance, we haven’t lost any of the classics. The growth is from some folks bringing both their late models and classics and all the new blood that has joined the hobby. Something else that’s relatively new to the show is the Mopar Hall of Fame. This will be the third year and maybe the best yet! It is held in Camp Hill Saturday evening and ticket information is available at www.MoparH- allOfFame.com. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear the stories right from the source and mingle with the legends of our hobby! The 2015 Chrysler Nationals is already in the planning stages with a celebration of the ’80s and fins of the ’50s.

  • A Brief History of Funny Cars….. Even Today, Race Fans Still Love to Watch the Classics Run
A Brief History of Funny Cars….. Even today, race fans still love to watch the classics run. By: Jim Maxwell / PERFORMANCE BUSINESS – DEC 2010 In late October in Bakersfield, Calif., 37 Nostalgia Funny Cars entered the California Hot Rod Reunion, and another 10 were on display in the pits. The fans roared as a best elapsed time of 5.786 seconds and a 248.34-mph top speed were posted by these race machines that resemble beautiful beasts of the past. Drag racing fans can‘t get enough of these classic cars, which bring back fond memories of modern drag racing‘s formative years. So, we thought we‘d take a brief look back at the history of funny cars, and how they got to where they are today. Strong Start Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 29-31, 1965. The American Hot Rod Association was putting on its season-opening Winternationals drag races at Bee Line Dragway and seven brand-new, never-before-seen racecars from the Chrysler Corp. were being unloaded in the pits and making their way to the starting line. These were not normal-looking machines, but rather strange-appearing because of their dramatically altered wheelbase, which relocated the rear axle forward by some 15 inches, and also had the front wheels pushed forward by 10 inches. The cars were a mix of Dodges (Ramchargers, Bud Faubel, Dick Landy) and Plymouths (Butch Leal, Sox & Martin, Golden Commandos, Lee Smith) and they were powered by the familiar 426-ci Hemi Super Stock engines that came out in 1964. However, new for the year was a magnesium intake manifold (which replaced the previously used aluminum unit) and the cylinder heads were now cast aluminum pieces rather than the heavier cast iron versions.
