Greetings Nor-Cal Olds Club members, Another typical hot summer in the CA central valley. I’ve been busy in the mornings and eve- nings working on my 1954 Chevrolet, cosmetic restoration, and should have it complete by the end of September (pictures attached). Yes, I know it’s not an Oldsmobile, but I’ve owned it since high school. Once I complete the ’54 Chevrolet, my 1955 Oldsmobile will be going through this same process. “Let’s Try Something New” (or revisit). Is an idea that past president, Ken Van Gundy, Jr. launched in 1994, and I’d like to re-launch this year. With club members spread out all over Northern California, I’d like to hold a “Get Together” in five or six areas like San Jose, Sacramento, Modesto/ Fresno, San Rafael, the East Bay & the Peninsula. These “Get Togethers” will not be meetings, but rather a chance to bring members together at their home/garage or a pizza parlor and just talk cars. The club will provide food and soft drinks. I’d like to hear from as many of you as possible about this idea. Looking forward to seeing you at our Micke Grove event!

President Bob Griffith

I saw this picture on the internet and was amazed the ‘49 Olds made it at least half way into a house with what appears minor damage. I wanted to create a appropriate caption but I couldn’t come up with one. Any ideas? Let me know and I’ll publish it in the next Oldsletter. Your Editor, Larry Ewing

I was making sales calls with one of the sales staff I directed when a 1971 Toronado went flying past us. I told my associate to catch up to that car, which I had never seen before, so I could see what it was. When we did I knew I had to have one, the Toronado’s of the 60s had not caught my attention, but this car was something special. So when I got home I went to Phelps Oldsmobile in San Jose, California to check out what they had. I came home with my car and still have it today. I followed the manual to the letter. One of the requirements was to change the transmission oil and filter at 25,000 miles so I had it done. It started to leak and it is still leaking after 177,000 miles later. The joke was when I ever pulled into the Oldsmobile service bay for service the guys would tell me you can’t park that car there because it leaks. My response would be “then fix it”! I have no doubt I will get it to stop leaking some day but it’s a small price to pay for the enjoyment the car brings to me. Larry Simon, San Jose, CA.

6 Five years after the original introduction of the all new Oldsmobile Toronado (1966) they intro- duce the second series starting in 1971. The engineers decided on a full frame and 123.2 wheel base 3.3 inches longer than the original. The overall length of the car was stretched 5.6 inches to 219.9 inches overall. Oldsmobile acknowledged that there were other luxury coupes on the market, so they dubbed the ‘71 Toronado “The Unmistakable One”. Available only as a two door hardtop, the ‘71 Toro also came in a single trim level though a Brougham option with individual controlled 60/40 front seats could be had. Prior Toronado‘s from ‘66 to ‘70 offered a standard and a deluxe version but very few of the standard model ver- sions were ever sold as most people opted for the higher level option. Larry told me his car although purchased in San Jose ended up back in Michigan for a while as he was transferred with his company. He said his wife, his daughter, his son all used this car and it took it’s toll after many years. There were some rust issues that had to be addressed and that was taken care of. At one point there was engine failure with a spun bearing that he had to get fixed. This is all out of warranty stuff but Larry loved the car so much he continued to repair it and keep it in top shape. Now at 177,000 miles this car looks brand new, the upholstery has been meticulously redone and is flawless as well as the paint a vinyl top. This car is garaged and pampered and is very much a part of the Simon family. You can very well call it a “Keeper” Clockwise below; plush 60-40 power seat, instrument panel from “Space Craft”, Torona- do specific air cleaner, 350 HP 455 w/all accessories. All like new condition.

7 Portal Park Show Sunday July 29th was a wonderful day at Portal Park where the local Cadillac LaSalle club has their annual event. Mid 80-degree temperature and shade trees as cars parked on the lawn. It doesn’t get much better than that. The show field was dominated by Cadillacs of course, followed by at least a dozen Packards, 3 Pontiacs, 2 Pierce Arrows, 2 Hudsons, 2 Ford products, and only 2 Oldsmobiles. John Smith with his ‘51 98 and me with my ‘50 Convertible and only 1 Buick. The catered BBQ was great again with plenty of all you can eat food. the best non Cadillac car was a ‘48 Pack- ard woody and peoples choice was a modified ‘49 Cadillac that our own Albert Esquivel helped work on for his good friend Mario. Unfortunately Albert was sick Sunday an couldn’t make the show.

Only 2 Oldsmobiles managed to come, John Smith’s ‘51 98 and Larry Ewing’s ‘50 convertible

Albert’s friend Mario won Peoples Choice with his ‘49 Cad. Two Pierce Arrows of mid thirties

Past Cad Pres Barns, 57 El Dorado. Three late 40’s Packards with woody on end Note large Packard row in distance 8 as Best non-Cadillac car Gene Adams by Larry Ewing Back in the mid 50s I was a teenager and loved to read Magazine. One of my favorite parts was an Oldsmobile that continued to set speed records and it was owned by Gene Adams of Los Angeles. This car went 106 mph and next issues it was 108, 110, 112 faster and faster all this in the quarter mile. I was enthralled. I found it important to get an Oldsmobile powered

car and my first car was a stock flathead ‘40 Ford deluxe coupe. I eventually acquired a ‘56 Olds 324 engine with the inspiration of Hot Rod Magazine putting these engines in various different cars, mainly early Fords. What actually transpired was I sold the ‘40 Ford and that ‘56 engine ended up going in a 1950 Olds 88 much like Gene Adams car except the coupe version. Over the years I had heard about Gene being still connected with and also em- ployed at Hilborn, the fuel injection service in Los Angeles. I saw Gene at a distance but did not meet him at the 1988 Fremont Drags when they were closing the place. He had a line of people wanting to tap his knowledge on fuel injection as he was the guru and still is. Fast forward to 2018 at the Good Guys in Pleasanton. My brother and I were walking by a ‘55 Chevrolet black-and-white 210 Sedan. I told my brother that I used to have one of those for a short while and he walked over and looked at the engine and pointed and said “not like this”. Turns out there was an early Chrysler Hemi installed in this ‘55 Chevy. I looked behind the car and saw a couple sitting in lawn chairs. I gave them the thumbs up. The man pointing to the woman as if it was her car. She approached and said that Gene Adams build this engine for her. I remarked “the real Gene Adams! The drag racer Gene Adams?”. She said yes, he lives in Andersen and he’s practically a neighbor of ours. I asked about the Olds engine that Arizona Olds Club member Jim Schultz had given Gene back in the early 90s when Gene retired in Chino Valley, AZ. Gene was looking for a ‘49-’50 303 Olds engine to build for a drag race class. I knew this happened but I never heard the results. She said that her nephew drove that Olds powered car and It did well but had issues when he over revved it in neutral. She said his name is Kin Bates. Her name was Lisa and it turns out she and her husband Claude Lavoie are both into serious drag racing. Her husband races a and has various other cars as well including a Bonneville car. He told us Gene Adams is building an engine for that car too. Claude sensed my enthusiasm about Gene Adams and asked if I wanted to meet him. He was right, I really did, so the next time I was headed up Anderson way Claude arranged a visit to Gene’s Shop. My brothers, Mike and Tom and I were able to meet and visit Gene Adams at his shop mid- July 2018. He had a picture of an Olds engine front and center at his shop desk plus various shots of early drag racing. He went right back to talking about his early racing with his ‘50 Oldsmobile in the ‘50s. He had and shared pictures and paperwork he had saved from back in the day. He was all into

9 Olds engines, held many records back in the ‘50s with one in the Albertson Olds Dragster which Leonard Harris drove to top eliminator at the Nationals in ’60. But Gene started to notice the engineering on the Chrysler Hemis of the day and by 1962-63 so now his focus was with Chrysler, It couldn’t have been a better visit for us. But sadly for him his wife Doris died a few week before we came up. He also lost his friend Tom McEwen early this June. Gene is about 84 and is going strong. He showed us his flow bench/station where he tests heads & intakes and can set up for nitro, alcohol and gas and variations of each. Over my head scientifically but my brother Tom, an hydrological engineer understood what he was up to. On the right is a picture I took of Gene and I had him hold an article I brought about his Olds out of a ‘58 Hot Rod Magazine. He also had a copy there too. He showed us paper work from Santa Ana Drag Strip where he held 3 records in 1956 at the same time with the same Olds en- gine, Olds Modified, 100 MPH, C gas 106 and in a ‘34 Ford at 110 mph. He talked about the engine he build that he got from Jim Schultz It went near 160 mph in the mid-8 second range, confirming what Lisa and Claude told us, he said it had a 2 speed Powerglide and the driver Kin Bates over revved it in neutral and pushed the valves into the pistons. He showed us the fuel injection but not the engine. Gene Adams is a drag racing legend and a super friendly guy and also know as Drag Racing’s Original Professor!

Above Lisa and Claude Lavoie in their garage in Anderson, CA. Her ‘55 Hemi 210 in far background. Left is Gene at Bonnev- ille Salt Flats back in the mid ‘50s. He said he went 146 MPH in his ‘50 88 fastback with Engle 10 Cam and Adams mods. Above is a picture that was on Gene’s shop wall near his desk. He said he was in the ‘57 Fiesta wagon push car and Tom McEwen in the Olds pow- ered “Shark”dragster. Circa 1961.
