A review of finite-element methods for solving the shallow-water equations

ABSTRACT: The shallow-water equations have been extensively used for a wide variety of coastal phenomena, such as -currents, pollutant- storm-surges, - propagation, etc., to mention but a few. In meteorology the shallow-water equations also known as the prim- itive barotropic equations have been extensively used to test new numerical solutions for numer- ical weather prediction models as they posses the same mixture of fast and slow Rossby waves as the more complex three dimensional baroclinic . In the present survey we will review the application of finite-element methods for solving the shallow-water equa- tions. Various issues such as variable resolution, integral invariant conservation, etc. will be ad- dressed.
