I had arrived late on a Sunday night in January of 2002 for my first “J-Term” class, which was scheduled to begin the next day. Accompanied by my friend and fellow East Tennessee Extension Center student Mark Martin, I walked into an empty and silent Norton Hall. I was in awe of the beauty of the buildings, but more so of the seminary’s legacy of confessional fidelity that had been recovered under the leadership of President R. Albert Mohler, Jr. As I walked by the office of Dr. Mohler (then on the first floor of Norton Hall), I was reminded of the reason I had become a Southern Baptist in the first place. It had been the theological commitment to biblical inerrancy in the Convention’s entities brought about the Conservative Resurgence that had brought this former Independent Baptist into the fold. The campus at 2825 Lexington Road was a tangible reminder that I was part of something bigger than myself and my small local church. Our participation in the Cooperative Program allowed us to have an investment around the globe in the work of God. One very important part of that work for Southern Baptists for over one hundred and fifty years has been Southern Seminary. Over a decade later, I still never walk onto the campus of Southern Seminary without a tremendous sense of gratefulness to God for the privilege of attending such a historic and strategic institution. I completed my Master of Divinity while serving as a pastor in East Tennessee. While as a student at the extension center in Maryville, Tennessee, I was encouraged especially by professors Chad Owen Brand and M. David Sills. These men enabled me to believe that Ph.D. work was a possibility for me. I remain grateful for their ix encouragement then, and their friendship now. Although my love for history dates back to my reading of baseball history books as a child, I first remember a desire to do historical research while taking a course on the history of Baptists with Gregory A. Wills in the summer of 2003. His combination of meticulous historical research and impeccable Christian piety is one which I hope to emulate. As a Ph.D. student at Southern, I have been challenged and encouraged by what seems like the entire faculty, but especially professors Gregg R. Allison, Michael A. G. Haykin, Thomas J. Nettles, David L. Puckett, Gregory A. Wills, and Shawn D. Wright. While at Southern, I have been afforded the opportunity to work closely with two of the premier Baptist historians alive today. I will forever be grateful for the privilege of having Thomas J. Nettles as my doctoral supervisor. His trust of my instincts and confidence in my ability have been both inspiring and intimidating. To know Dr. Nettles is to know a Christian gentleman whose very demeanor makes one want to be a more devoted follower of Christ. Words alone will never be able to repay the debt that I owe to Michael A. G. Haykin. Without him I likely would never have had the opportunity to pursue Ph.D. studies. God, in his providence, used this man to open the door for me to study at Southern. Dr. Haykin has been my teacher, boss, mentor, and friend. In every relationship, he has been a model of Christian piety. His investment in me is such that every academic opportunity that I have heretofore have been given, or ever shall be given, can be credited in some way to his influence and support. I must also express gratitude to Russell D. Moore, who has always encouraged me and whose hiring of Michael A. G. Haykin in 2007 paved the way for me to serve as Dr. Haykin’s research assistant for the past five years. Farmdale Baptist Church has been home for me and my family for the past five years as I have pursued doctoral studies. This church family has been loving and supportive every step of the way. They have not begrudged the time that I have spent in seminars or writing this dissertation. They have loved me and my family and have shown x it by their prayers and financial support. There is no doubt that God placed us at Farmdale, and we are thankful for the opportunity to serve Christ’s people here. Of course, most supportive of my academic endeavors has been my family. My parents, Garry and Jan Weaver, have always encouraged and supported me in every pursuit. As long as I can remember, they have been a model of sacrificial service to Christ. I am thankful for their example and investment in my life. They have recently reenlisted as missionaries at an age when many would be considering retirement. Their desire to finish strong and to see the nations reached with the gospel is a challenge and inspiration to me. They are my heroes. My brother and sister, Jeremy Weaver and Elizabeth Ramseyer, have been more than siblings; they have been lifelong friends who always bring laughter into my life. My grandparents, Frank and Hazel Weaver, have also been supportive throughout this long educational process. Their prayers and financial gifts have been used by God to meet needs at just the right time. My wife, Gretta, and our children have been patient with my long hours of writing and a constant source of encouragement. The children’s questions of “Are you done yet?” have provided motivation to finish the job as soon as possible. Gretta has always supported me, and her care for me and the children during what must have seemed like an eternity to her, is the key reason why I have been able to complete this project. Therefore, this dissertation is dedicated to her and our children, all of whom I adore. Among the many who have provided academic assistance are the staff of the James P.   • Chapter Xiv Baptist Successionism
    CHAPTER XIV BAPTIST SUCCESSIONISM The devious strategy of associating the Received Text with the aforementioned medieval sects, which are alleged to have descended in an unbroken succession from the New Testament Church, has its roots in a larger movement known as ―Baptist Successionism‖ or ―Landmarkism.‖ This movement is based on a misapplication of Proverbs 22:28 which is removed from its context and applied to Baptist ecclesiology. In its context of Proverbs 22, ―Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set‖ was a prohibition against removing ancient markers, usually stones, which identified the established boundaries of a piece of land. The Baptist Successonists claim that the ―ancient landmark‖ of their movement is not the Protestant Reformation but the New Testament Church, and that their founder was John the Baptist. Landmark Baptists reject, not only identification of Baptists with other Protestant denominations, they deny the existence of a universal Church and recognize only Baptists as having a direct succession from the apostles. The pseudo history of Baptist Successionism is today preached by Fundamentalist Baptist KJV-Only preachers such as David Cloud: ―We have now seen that the Baptists, who were formerly called Anabaptists...were the original Waldenses, and have long in the history of the Church received the honor of that origin. On this account, the Baptists may be considered the only Christian community which has stood since the apostles, and as a Christian society which has preserved pure the doctrines of the Gospel through all ages.‖ (David Cloud, Way of Life Encyclopedia, Roman Catholic Dominion 500- 1500 A.D.) It arose in the mid-eighteenth century and was a dominant force in the first half-century of the life of the Southern Baptist Convention, America’s largest Protestant denomination. J. R. Graves was its chief architect, promoter, and apologist. He initiated or helped propagate controversies which shaped Southern Baptist life and practice. His influence spread Landmarkism throughout the Southern Baptist Convention through religious periodicals, books, and educational materials. Key Landmark figures in the seminaries and churches also promoted these views. After over fifty years of significant impact the influence of Landmarkism seemed to diminish eventually fading from sight. Many observers of Southern Baptist life relegated it to a movement of historical interest but no current impact. In an effort to examine this assumption, research was conducted which explored certain theological positions of Graves, other Landmarkers, and sects claimed as the true church by the promoters of Baptist church succession.

    The Trail of Blood-Baptist Successionism By Steve Ray An article in the soon to be published “Catholic Dictionary of Apologetics and Evangelism” by Ignatius Press ********************************************* When Baptists attempt to discover the origins of their tradition they are faced with a historical dilemma. The search for Baptists roots hits a dead end in the sixteenth century. Most acknowledge that Baptist tradition is a tributary flowing out of the Protestant Reformation, but others attempt to discover a line of historical continuity, of doctrine and practice, back to Jesus and even John the Baptist. These Baptists are commonly referred to “Baptist Successionists”. Such a historical continuity is a factual impossibility though the proponents continue aggressively promoting their theories. First, we will summarize the popular theory as espoused in the popular booklet The Trail of Blood and secondly, we will analyze their position historically. It is helpful to remember, according to W. Morgan Patterson, associate professor of church history at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, that the “Baptist historians”-those who are proponents of this view-”have been preachers and pastors first of all, and historians second” (Baptist Successionism, [Valley Forge, PA: Judson Press, 1980), 5. The Trail of Blood was written by J. M. Carroll in 1931 and is published by Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington Kentucky. It is a small booklet of fifty-six pages containing a proposed timeline of Baptist churches back to Jesus. By 1994 over 1,955,000 copies had been printed and it has gained great popularity among Fundamentalist groups. The author unabashedly attempts to denigrate the Catholic Church while attempting to establish his own legitimacy as the true church.

Duvall Introduction When Clarence Walker began publishing The Trail of Blood in 1931, neither he nor J. M. Carroll, the author, could have imagined the impact the booklet would have on Baptists in the United States and around the world. The first thousand copies had been sold quickly by another publisher and sales continued steadily from Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. Today there have been nearly three million copies sold. The booklet has been enlarged by the present publisher,1 and it has been translated into several other languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian and possibly others. It is now on the Internet in at least three languages. The Trail of Blood describes in a brief outline form what successionist historians had written for nearly two centuries. They believed there had been a succession of churches that held the basic doctrines of Baptists, and they were not associated in any way with the Roman Catholic institution. The Trail of Blood does not claim to be a complete history as such, but what might be called a “Baptist Manifesto.” It was written in such a way that pastors and teachers could present a thumbnail sketch of their Baptist ancestors. One Side Just Loses More Slowly”: The Wire and Drug Policy Steve Wakeman Liverpool John Moores University Abstract This article presents a cultural analysis of HBO’s drama series, The Wire. It is argued here that, as a cultural text, The Wire forms a site of both containment and resistance, of hegemony and change with recourse to the regulation of illicit drug markets. In this sense The Wire constitutes an important cultural paradigm of drug policy debates, one that has significant heuristic implications regarding both the present consequences and future directions of illicit drug policy. Ultimately, it is demonstrated below that through its representations of the tensions and antagonisms characteristic of drug control systems, The Wire reveals larger predicaments of governance faced by neoliberal democracies today. Photographic images (Carrabine, 2012), children’s cartoons (Kort-Butler, 2012), video games (Groombridge, 2008), and films (O’Brien et al., 2005; Tzanelli et al., 2005; Rafter, 2007) have all been fruitfully investigated with recourse to the role(s) they play in the construction and development of public understandings of crime and justice. Since television programmes are one of the most powerful vehicles driving and informing such popular understandings, their inclusion within criminological analysis is not only justified, but critically important to the continued development of criminology as a field of study.

I do recommend, particularly, if readers can get hold of it, Bishop John V. Taylor's address on "The Church witnesses to the Kingdom" and also Kosuke Koyama's address on "The Crucified Christ challenges Human Power" - these were undoubtedly the two finest pieces of thinking put before the conference. Raymond Fung's address "Good News to the Poor - the case for a missionary movement" is also very good value. Extracts from these addresses, together with other reports of the conference can be found in the latest issue of the International Review of Mission, Vol. LXIX (275) July 1980. Issues of I.R.M. from about mid-1978 onwards give further background to the Melbourne conference. I returned home from Melbourne with a deepened awareness of the richness and variety of the people of God, and with a renewed confidence in the power and relevance of the gospel. P. Not only that, it is the most important. One of the most memorable story arcs from The Wire’s five seasons is the rise and fall of Hamsterdam—a quasi-legalized drug zone in West Baltimore. Stories are powerful teaching tools because they marry information and context. By seeing how the application of law affects characters we know and care about, we become more attune to the potential effects of legal decisions in the real world. The story of Hamsterdam—which is essentially an attempt to transform a black market into a fringe market—presents just such an opportunity. When considering the various dimensions of the fringe economy, life in Hamsterdam imparts three critical insights: (1) Markets arise wherever there exists market demand.

    114 HBO’s The Wire and Criminal Procedure: A Match Made in Heaven Brian R. Gallini Fans of The Wire know Bunk. Those fans who are legal minded may even remember, in the first scene of the first episode of Season 5,1 when Bunk masterfully interrogates a helpless suspect. I cannot imagine a better introduction to the Fifth Amendment materials in the Criminal Procedure course. But The Wire’s five seasons offer more than just helpful scenes. Rather, the show raises a diverse array of Fourth and Fifth Amendment issues that, I believe, can assist in teaching the Criminal Procedure course throughout the semester by keying all the course’s topics to The Wire. I proceed in this piece by offering (1) whyThe Wire makes for such a compelling pedagogical tool, (2) why a “one show” approach is superior to using sporadic clips from a variety of sources, and (3) then offering some concrete examples of how the clips are helpful on a class-by-class basis. Why The Wire? The Wire takes viewers into the inner-city streets of Baltimore for an in- depth look at the highly lucrative drug trade. Using a wide array of colorful characters, it treats viewers to a morally and legally complex world where police, prosecutors, defense attorneys, drug sellers and drug users all serve as compelling personalities living out the American drug war. Against that captivating backdrop is a more specific appeal to law professors—how all of The Wire’s characters interact with the Bill of Rights. Throughout its five seasons, the show provides an extraordinary number of discussion-worthy scenes that magnificently bring complex constitutional doctrines to life.
