In-patient psychiatric care is provided for the Shetland population. NHS Grampian embraces the acute services, mental health, primary care and other services across Grampian. The population covered by the Mental Health Services Clinical Management Board is 528,400, of whom approximately 40% live in Aberdeen. A full redevelopment of ROYAL CORNHILL HOSPITAL, which is located close to the centre of Aberdeen is now complete. The new hospital includes acute and continuing care wards, Day Hospitals, central treatment complex (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and ECT suite) and forensic and intensive psychiatric care unit. An acute psychiatric ward is located in Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin. The Mental Health Services are divided into four Clinical Directorates, Adult Mental Health (including the Adolescent and Child & Family Mental Heath Services), Old Age Psychiatry, Specialisms (incorporating Rehabilitation, Forensic Psychiatry, Liaison Psychiatry, Eating Disorders, Psychotherapy, Substance Misuse) and Learning Disabilities. Services in Moray are managed jointly by the relevant Directorates and a local management team. Child and Family Psychiatry is located on the acute services site at Foresterhill. Academic Psychiatry at the University of Aberdeen The former Department of Mental Health, in common with all clinical departments in Aberdeen, now sits within a medical school division. The University team is based in the Clinical Research Centre on the Cornhill site, and comprises clinical researchers, lecturers and scientists working on a range of projects alongside NHS staff with dedicated research and teaching sessions. The appointee will be eligible to apply for Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer status, and participation in research and teaching is strongly encouraged and actively supported: facilities are available develop staff at every level – from novice to expert in both teaching and research domains. Further information is available at www.abdn.ac.uk/mentalhealth The University Department of Mental Health provides good opportunities for training in research methods and assistance in the conduct of research studies. In addition, the Clinical Research Centre and the Mental Health Research Unit provide facilities for the conduct of clinical research projects. Description of hospitals and related facilities Royal Cornhill Hospital (Aberdeen) has a bed complement of 228 and provides a comprehensive range of general and specialist psychiatric services. A Nursery for the children of members of staff is located on this site. Community Rehabilitation Unit (Polmuir Road, Aberdeen) has five two-bedroom flats for patients undergoing rehabilitation. Great Western Lodge (Aberdeen) is a “halfway” residential facility located near the centre of Aberdeen. It provides for eight forensic in-patients who are preparing for discharge. Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital (located on the site of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary at Foresterhill) houses the department for Child and Family Psychiatry with day- patient and out-patient facilities. Dr Gray’s Hospital (Elgin, approximately 65 miles from Aberdeen) has a 25 bedded ward serving Moray. Elmwood Learning Disability services are provided from this facility developed close to the Royal Cornhill site. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) The ARI is the principal adult acute teaching hospital for the Grampian area. It has a complement of approximately 800 beds and houses all major surgical and medical specialties. Most surgical specialties along with the main theatre suite, surgical HDU, and ICU are located within the pink zone of the ARI. The new Emergency Care Centre (see below) is part of ARI and is located centrally within the site. Emergency Care Centre (ECC) The ECC building was opened in December 2012 and houses the Emergency Department (ED), Acute Medical Initial Assessment (AMIA) unit, primary care out-of- hours service (GMED), NHS24, and most medical specialties of the Foresterhill site. The medical HDU (10 beds), Coronary Care Unit, and the GI bleeding unit are also located in the same building. Intensive Care Medicine and Surgical HDU The adult Intensive Care Unit has 16 beds and caters for approximately 700 admissions a year of which, less than 10 per cent are elective and 14 per cent are transfers from other hospitals. The new 18 bedded surgical HDU together with ICU and medical HDU have recently merged under one critical care directorate.
