LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Larry McCarthy upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by the Rockland Gaelic Athletic Association WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the quality and character of life in the communities across New York State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza- tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its citizenry; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long- standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Larry McCarthy upon the occasion of his designation for special recogni- tion by the Rockland Gaelic Athletic Association on Saturday, November 7, 2009; and WHEREAS, Larry McCarthy was born in Cork, Ireland, and holds a Ph.D. in Sports Management from Ohio State University; currently, he is an associate professor of management at the W. Paul Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University where he teaches in the Center for Sports Management, and also serves as the Director of the Institute of International Business; and WHEREAS, Previously, Larry McCarthy was the Graduate Sports Management Program coordinator in the Department of Recreation & Sports Management at Georgia Southern University; he earned an M.A. degree from New York University (NYU), and a B.Ed. degree from the National University of Ireland (NUI); and WHEREAS, Larry McCarthy has published research articles in national and international journals for professional sports franchises, cross cultural studies, international sports management and Irish sports in the United States; along with Professors Richard Irwin and Bill Sutton, he co-authored SPORTS PROMOTION AND SALES MANAGEMENT; and WHEREAS, Larry McCarthy was a founding member of the Sports Marketing Association and was appointed by The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games as an Olympic Envoy to the Olympic Council of Ireland for the Centennial Olympic Games; having spent six years as secretary, he currently serves as Chairman of the Gaelic Athletic Association of Greater New York (NYGAA); and WHEREAS, A long time member of the Sligo Football Club in New York, Larry McCarthy was formerly a playing member of Bishoptown GAA Club, Cork and Raheny GAA Club, in Dublin; he also played with and was secre- tary of Thomond College Football Club; and WHEREAS, Larry McCarthy is married to Barbara and they are the proud parents of Conor and Shane; Larry's support to all causes is untiring but no cause is greater than promoting sports and in particular his native games of Hurling and Gaelic Football; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ- uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten- tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Larry McCarthy upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by the Rockland Gaelic Athletic Association; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- smitted to Larry McCarthy..
