Drastic Reduction of Pollution Caused by Ships The adoption of more than 25 main contracts for maritime safety, prevention of pollution and liability resulted in drastically reducing pollution from ships. This is reported in a paper by the Association of GreekShipowners, “Preven- tion of Environmental Pollution by Ships,” which registers the international and community framework of rules and regulations for the protection of the marine environment. The Association points out that marine accidents—which statisti- cally are very few—cannot be eliminated all together, however it is committed to completely eliminate operational pollution by ships. By staying informed about what is happening in the world and by passing the information on to others we are taking a significant step toward the protection of our planet.

May 23 World Turtle Day

May 23 is designated as World Turtle Day. This started in 2000 in the United States and, year by year, is gaining worldwide interest as turtles are facing great difficulties and are threatened by extinction. This ancient species, which in eastern philosophies symbolizes longevity, inhabited the earth long before human beings. It has survived since the age of dinosaurs, and has come to face extinction during the recent centuries. In Greece alone, in 2008, 292 sea turtles were found dead and 42 injured. Greece is host to the largest Mediterranean population of Careta-Careta turtles, and their protection has been undertaken for the past 25 years by the non-governmental organization “Arhelon.

June 5 World Environment Day

On June 5 the whole planet celebrates World Environment Day. The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), for 35 years, has established this day as a day of celebration and care for the environment, aiming to sensitize the world on the issue of the protection of the planet. Environment WE DID NOT INHERIT IT FROM OUR PARENTS WE BORROWED IT FROM OUR CHILDREN

This is the motto of UNICEF that points out that it is imperative we understand that environmental issues are issues affecting the rights of children. Whatever we do on this planet has a deep impact on future generations. UNICEF’s efforts focus on the environmental education of children and on their awareness that a healthy environment is directly and intimately connected to their own welfare.
