"(2) Is it not a fact that the Cannon Hill Saleyards are merely a facility placed at the disposal of the buyers and sellers of cattle and the Queensland Meat Industry Board has nothing to do with the prices paid for the cattle sold at the Saleyards?" "(3) Would it not be true to state that the only affect that the operations of the Brisbane Abattoir have on the price of meat to the Brisbane housewife is the charge per head imposed on the slaugh­ tering of cattle owned by meat companies and individual buyers?" His parents, Charles and Joy, were farmers and active members of the local Methodist Church, and their parenting and Christian witness contributed to their three sons entering ordained ministry. A discerning school teacher encouraged the 8-year-old Alan to enter a school talent quest doing a series of quick sketches on large sheets of butcher’s paper. He won. This began the development of a communication gift that would influence his preaching style in years to come. On completion of the Leaving Certificate at Young High School, Alan went to work on the family farm. During this period, he co-led the church’s youth group, and was involved in the local community producing current affairs cartoons for the local paper, running a youth drop-in centre in conjunction with the Salvation Army, and as a member of the Young Repertory Society. In 1970 -71, Rev. Dr Alan Walker, President of the Methodist Conference in NSW, led evangelistic missions across NSW. Alan led the youth program for the week of mission held at Young Methodist Church.
