In the 15th Century Champagne as a wine growing region was more important than Burgundy mostly due to the proximity to Paris which is only 1 hour away by train. Back then up until the mid-19th Century Champagne was a still, pale-ruby red wine. It is thanks to Monk Dom Pierre Péringon who had stumbled across the effervescence and helped manage and control it. At that time, wine makers had no temperature-controlled rooms and no filtering mechanism which allowed yeast from the alcoholic fermentation to stay in the wine. In the winter temperatures would drop below freezing and the yeast would fall dormant. In spring it would awake resulting into a secondary fermentation which would produce carbon dioxide gas and result into heavy pressured bottles which would burst. Dom Pierre Péringon had found a way into controlling the amount of yeast in the bottle and finding stronger glass for his bottles which gave him control. That all happened in the late 17th Century but still wine was still much more popular until the 19th Century. Once the bubbles took the whole production over Champagne, it was the large Champagne-houses priority in marketing their product out into the world. It didn’t take long for Champagne conquering the world and being known as the best celebratory drink there is. Prestige cuvèes came to be thanks to Luis Roederer who had made a special, high-quality, longer aged wine for emperor Tsar Alexander II in 1876, this fine champagne was bottled in a flat-bottomed crystal bottle hence the wines name Luis Roederer Cristal. All other Houses followed with this trend a few years later. And now we have the chance in tasting us thru the best sparkling and most complex wines in the world. • Spain Diversity Climate Notes
Spain Diversity Climate Notes *** WELCOME TO SPAIN The Diversity Network’s Country Diversity Notes provide readily accessible summaries of country- specific information on potential challenges for students who are from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in study abroad programs. The notes were created to facilitate the ability of study abroad professionals to find a good country fit for prospective study abroad students who are uncertain of how they will be received abroad because of their race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, religion or disability. The Spain diversity note, below, features a country overview as well as information pertinent to the climate of respect that U.S. students of diverse backgrounds can reasonably expect while living in the country. It also offers bulleted information noting facts that may directly relate to student experiences in the country. Links for students to pursue additional information resources on the various topics are also offered. While the note provides a bird’s-eye view of diversity matters in the country as they pertain to U.S. students, the country information found in the note is not exhaustive. Advisors should use the information contained below in collaboration with faculty and staff who have experience in the particular country, returned study abroad students who are able and feel comfortable to discuss their own observations of diversity in the country, and the advisor’s own knowledge. COUNTRY OVERVIEW Spain is the third most popular destination for U.S. study abroad students. Engulfing its Iberian neighbor Portugal, Spain has coasts along the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, with the Strait of Gibraltar to the south separating it from Morocco.

A- 6 PRELIMINARY GEDLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF OTSEGO LAKE John Sales, Willard Harman, P . Jay Fleisher, Ray Breuninger1and Michael Mel ia2 SUNY, College at Oneonta INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This report is a synthesis of the contributions of several workers. All of the ecological aspects, underwater sampling, bathymetry as well as some of the geological interpretation are the r esult of an impressive ten- year research effort by Bill Harman and his students working at the sueo Biological Field Station. Use of the fiel d station research vessel as well as the logistics for the lake tour and the lake log are also Harman ' s contribution. Breuninger contributed the sedimentology and Melia the Paleomalacology in two short studies done in 1974. Fl eisher contributed material on the glacial geology and the glacial landforms map and accompanied Sales on an initial reconnaissance of the lake perimeter. Sales pulled together most of the general geology, strati graphy, physiography and structure and did the actual writing of the shore road log. leaning heavily on the interpretations of Fleisher on the glacial geology. While not contributing specificall y to this report, the bedrock mapping done by Ri ckard and Zenger (1964) provides a firm foundation for many of the interpretations. IP pulli ng t he paper together and in fitting other workers' concepts to the l ocal situation, Sales ~ have distorted some of the concepts of the other workers . Much of this contribution represents preliminary ideas that will require further sUbstantiation and zoodification. Parts of this paper were updated from Sales , et al. , 1972 . • The Executive Committee of the Upper Vandalia Historical Society Has Generously Made Its Putnam County Cemeteries Available for Public Electronic Access
PUTNAM COUNTY CEMETERIES The Executive Committee of the Upper Vandalia Historical Society has generously made its Putnam County Cemeteries available for public electronic access. The document which follows has been taken from a printed copy by use of an optical character recognition program. While this digital version has been checked somewhat, many errors remain. Researchers are advised to utilize this document for quick search, and to check findings against a printed copy. The printed version includes a surname index, and a map which indicates locations of cemeteries in the county. The Society has collected additional material since the first publication of Cemeteries in 1990, and this data has been included in this revised edition. Sam P. Sentelle Hurricane, West Virginia June 21, 2004 1 2 PUTNAM COUNTY CEMETERIES PUBLISHED 1990 (With Added Material to June 21, 2004) BY THE UPPER VANDALIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY P. O. Box 111 Winfield, West Virginia 25159 3 4 INTRODUCTION This book is the result of a long and persistent effort put forth by many people. It has been an on-going project of the Upper Vandalia Historical Society that began several years ago. A committee was appointed at that time to proceed with a survey of as many Putnam County cemeteries as could be located. The project proved to be an enormous task as 255 cemeteries were found and recorded and more than 1700 different surnames were listed and indexed. Almost before the survey was finished, however, several more old burying grounds were reported that had been overlooked. It is the intension of the committee to continue to collect additional records as more cemeteries are located and from time to time publish supplementary editions to this register.
