A 27-year-old future-soul/R&B singer from Birmingham. This is Banks’ first full-length solo album following a string of three EP’s and being featured on tracks with , Sigma and most notably, 2014’s ‘Alive’ by Chase and Status. Firstly the artwork is striking. An eye-catching yellow border surrounds a painting depicting interlocking bodies each helping to lift the next person up — a visual representation of the albums title and the meaning behind it. The album title links back to the colloquial saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and is sentimental to Banks reflecting his upbringing in both his native Nigeria and in the UK where he arrived at the age of 13. The 14 song album kicks off with arguably its strongest song ‘Chainsmoking’. This is the lead single from the album and rightly so. Banks’ vocal ability is showcased and the sonics are strong, delivering a powerful electronic break in the chorus. Next comes ‘Love Ain’t Enough’, a song melodically similar to Rag’n’Bone Man, which makes it very ‘chart-friendly’. The track laden with electronics and thick production sees Banks joined by a strong female backing vocal performance creating a delicate feeling for the listener. ‘Mexico’ is a song that had so much potential. The instrumentation is fantastic and endearing featuring a bold combination of Hammond organ and a horn section. Banks’ usual electronic touch, although, masks some basic lyrics regarding a failed holiday to Cancun that struggles to captivate. Four songs in and we reach ‘Prosecco’. By this point, Banks’ has cemented his own sound and delivers a strong and catchy melody but unfortunately does not provide anything to challenge the listener in terms of instrumental combinations or lyrics. Featured vocalist Bibi Bourelly adds an effective contrast to Banks’ rich and warm voice on ‘Kumbaya’, a song that could easily have been a stripped down Rihanna tune but still one that could have been improved lyrically. Furthermore, ‘Slow up’ is a song on the verge of being labeled as a filler. Banks’ slows the tempo of the album down but struggles to maintain the listeners’ interest until 3 minutes in when the production on the instrumental break shines through and pulls the song back. Next, ‘Grown up’ (featuring NANA.), a short song which follows the trend set so far of being strong instrumentally but weak lyrically. It finds Banks attempting to contemplate life and his societal position over a lo-fi-beat and Tom Misch-esque electric guitar, following a 15 second clip of a telephone message which is difficult to understand and doesn’t quite deliver the same effect as when used successfully by the likes of Kendrick Lamar, who uses it in order to further flesh out the story of his second album ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city’, which I feel is where Banks’ got the idea from. The album then carries on in a similar vein. ‘Nostalgia’ is a well-produced number and ‘Caroline’ is evidently heavily inspired by Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ in the chorus. ‘Witness’ allows Banks to demonstrate his vocal abilities with venturing away from the low baritone we have become accustomed to by this point in the album, with a welcomed high pitch change. The penultimate track is second single ‘Unknown (To You)’, which is arguably the most powerful performance on the record. The chorus soars and showcases Banks’ vocals at their best, accompanied by a compelling string section. When the backing vocals kick in for the final few choruses we are finally given lyrics that deliver an emotive effect. Banks concludes with the slower and barer ‘Peace of Mind’. An apt title for the closing song of any album that has attempted to explore some of the writers most interesting thoughts and feelings. It is just a shame that in my opinion, Banks’ has not been successful in such a department. Overall, ‘Village’ a pleasant listen but not a memorable one. It challenges the listener on an instrumental level but falls short of doing so from a lyrical perspective. However, I feel Banks almost certainly has the potential to deliver in the future. The production on this record is effective and I would be intrigued to see him push his bold instrumental choices and pairings further. After all, this is only the debut album, and there is definitely more to come. Did you enjoy this article? Be sure to let us know!
