Reality Inspired Games: Expanding the Lens of Games’ Claims to Authenticity
Reality Inspired Games: Expanding the Lens of Games’ Claims to Authenticity Robyn McMillan, Darshana Jayemanne, Iain Donald School of Design and Informatics, Division of Games and Arts University of Abertay Bell Street, Dundee DD1 1HG +44 1382 308000 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper considers the potentials of contemporary games staking claims to realism through documentary and journalistic techniques as part of a wide-ranging cultural and technological phenomenon– ‘Reality Inspired Games’ or RIGs (Maurin, 2018). We argue that RIGs employ design techniques and strategies of legitimation that are valuable to the reactive development cycles in the indie sector, whilst also being beneficial for academic research and development. Through examining traditional documentary and the concept of Bruzzi’s performative documentary (2006) we highlight how this concept may allow developers to negotiate performativity and authenticity in their videogames. We discuss examples of such games in the realm of indie productions, such as That Dragon, Cancer (2016), This War of Mine (2014), and My Child Lebensborn (2018) and Bury Me, My Love (2017). All of which represent new ground for game design, documentary and journalistic techniques that have influenced our work on the MacMillan project. Keywords Reality Inspired Games, Documentary, Performativity, Indie “Much like photographs, paintings, literature and music are capable of transmitting the full range of the human experience from one human to another, so too can games. Due to their interactivity, games are capable of a higher form of communication, one which actively engages the participant and makes them a part of the experience rather than a passive observer” (Brathwaite & Sharp, 2010, p315). -

Don’t Forget to Save! The Impact of User Experience Design on Workflow of Authoring Video Game Narratives (Transfer Thesis) Daniel Green Department of Science and Technology Bournemouth University A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2019 This page is intentionally left blank. This page is intentionally left blank. Abstract Since their inception, video games have been a capable storytelling device. This is only amplified as technology improves. Contemporary video games boast awide range of interaction and presentational techniques that can enrich the narrative experience. Supporting authors with tools to prototype their stories, or even as direct integration into a game, is vital. This is especially important as the complexity and length of such narratives continues to increase. Designing these kinds of tools is no easy feat. In order to develop authoring systems for game developers that support prototyping or implementation of their envisioned narratives, we must gain an understanding of the underlying constituents that make up video game narrative and their structural and relational properties. Additionally, when designing the interface of and interactions with such systems, the User Experience (UX) design decisions taken may impact the workflow of the authors to implement their vision. Therefore, we must also gain an understanding of how various UX design paradigms alter the usability of our programs. -

PT, Freud, and Psychological Horror
Press Start Silent Halls Silent Halls: P.T., Freud, and Psychological Horror Anna Maria Kalinowski York University, Toronto Abstract “What is a ghost?” “An emotion, a terrible moment condemned to repeat itself over and over…” —The Devil’s Backbone (Del Toro, 2001) This paper analyses P.T. (Kojima Productions, 2014), a playable teaser made to demo a planned instalment within the Silent Hill franchise. While the game is now indefinitely cancelled, P.T. has cemented itself not only as a full gaming experience, but also as a juggernaut in the genre of psychological horror. Drawing from Sigmund Freud’s concept of the uncanny, the aim of the paper is to address how these psychological concepts surface within the now infamous never-ending hallway of P.T. and create a deeply psychologically horrifying experience. Keywords psychological horror; the uncanny; Freud; game design; Press Start 2019 | Volume 5 | Issue 1 ISSN: 2055-8198 URL: http://press-start.gla.ac.uk Press Start is an open access student journal that publishes the best undergraduate and postgraduate research, essays and dissertations from across the multidisciplinary subject of game studies. Kalinowski Silent Halls Introduction The genre of psychological horror is a complex one to navigate through with ease, especially for those that are faint of heart. Despite its contemporary popularity, when the sub-genre first began to emerge within horror films, it was considered to be a detriment to the horror genre (Jancovich, 2010, p. 47). The term ‘psychological’ was often used to disguise the taming of horror elements instead of pushing the genre into more terrifying territories. -

Hsin-Tze Wang Draft #3 Working Title of Thesis: “GENESIS” 30 October 2019 Thesis Instructor: Sharita Towne Advisor Selections (list 3 in order of preference): Teagan Smiley Wolfe, Chuck Lukacs, Laura Heit For my thesis project, I am examining the relationship between Transhumanism and modern media depictions of cyborgs and androids. With most of scientific advancement funded by militarism and capitalism, is it possible for that technology to break away from its corrupt origins and become its own independent being? Can that being, created for and from violence, reclaim their humanity? Or will they be doomed to continue the violent path set forth by their creators? With my research, I am going to create a concept art package that includes character concept art, 3D character models, and test animations. Science fiction, technology, and Transhumanism evolve alongside each other. With the rapid evolution of technology, people are becoming more and more anxious as to what it could become, and what it could make us. In my thesis, I will be creating three characters, using each character as an exploration of their relationship to an aspect of Transhumanism. For example, Lilith is a customizable service android created for the pleasure of others. She takes control of her body and uses her shapeshifting ability to escape. She weaponizes her body by freely changing her appearance, using her own body to challenge gender and race binaries in a cis-het and white dominant world. This blurring of gender binaries is tied to Donna Haraway’s “A Cyborg Manifesto,” where she describes the cyborg as “a creature in a postgender world.” The main inspirations for the project itself are the video games Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier:Automata, both developed by the game studio PlatinumGames. -
