It is - what we think - the 24th Lesbian lives conference, although we are getting to the stage where we might start losing count. Let’s just say it is now a conference of some maturity that remains relevant in every age, as the world’s most longstanding academic conference in Lesbian Studies. What we do know is that the first ever Lesbian Lives Conference was held in 1993 in University College Dublin and has been trooping on since, with the dedication of academics and activists and the amazing support from the community. From this comes the unique atmosphere of the Lesbian Lives Conference which is something special – as Katherine O’Donnell, one of the founders of the conference, said: ‘there is a friendliness, a warmth, an excitement, an openness, a bravery and gentleness that every Lesbian Lives Conference has generated’.

The month of June was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, which broke out after police raided the Stonewall Inn - a gay bar in Lower Manhattan, New York City. This prompted a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBT community that are widely considered to have triggered the modern LGBT rights movement. The following year, to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, the first gay pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco. In the UK, the first official Gay Pride Rally took place in London in 1972. Around 2,000 people attended the event.1 The last London Pride that took place in 2019 attracted an estimated 1.5 million attendees, making it the largest yet.2 Pride events take place each year all over the UK.

The first LGBT pride march was held in New York in 1970, to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall riots. During the Stonewall riots, LGBT people fought back against unfair treatment by the police. The 1970 march was called The Christopher Street Liberation Day March and the participants were asking for acceptance and for fair treatment for LGBT people. Pride events are normally big marches or parades with music, singing, dancing and colourful costumes. They’re a time for LGBT people to show they’re proud to be LGBT. In many countries, pride is an opportunity to celebrate the progress made in LGBT rights and acceptance but also to highlight the injustices that still exist for LGBT people. 2 Pride in the UK LGBT people and their friends and family take part in pride events up and down the country. 1.5 million people attended London Pride in 2019 and the march was led by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London. It is safe for people in the UK to attend pride marches and many LGBT people take their children with them. 3 Pride around the world Whilst LGBT people in the UK can safely take part in pride events, the same is not true for everyone in the world. This thesis explored the lived experiences and gained a deeper understanding of the impact that racism and homonegativity had on those who have been in or who are currently part of an inter-racial and/or inter-cultural (both partners are perceived as Black but come from different ethnic backgrounds) same-sex relationship. The research was carried out using a social constructionist theoretical framework. Semi-structured interviews and electronic questionnaires were used to gather the empirical data and thematic analysis was used in order to identify themes within the data. The participants’ accounts shed insight into the constraints that still surround inter-racial and/or inter-cultural same-sex relationships.

    Over Not Out The housing and homelessness issues specific to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender asylum seekers May 2009 Full report Michael Bell and Cole Hansen Michael Bell Associates © Metropolitan Support Trust 2009 Foreword Barbara Roche, Chair of Metropolitan Support Trust One of Refugee Support’s key objectives is to provide ‘quality housing and support services to refugees and asylum seekers that are sensitive to their needs and assists with their settlement and integration.’ While we fulfil that objective in a number of different ways, at the heart of our work is a commitment to understand some of the key issues facing refugees and asylum seekers so that we are able to tailor our services, making them appropriate to their individual and collective needs. In July 2008, the Research and Consultancy Unit at Refugee Support identified a significant research gap on the issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) refugees and asylum seekers. ‘Over Not Out’ is the first comprehensive study on the housing and homelessness issues facing LGBT asylum seekers. The analysis demonstrates that LGBT asylum seekers face multiple disadvantages because of their status, sexual orientation or gender identity. The policy recommendations that we have identified are helpful in shaping our own services, in particular; diversity training in this area for all staff as part of their induction and personal development; confidential reporting mechanisms for LGBT asylum seekers who may experience harassment and a commitment to listen to and act upon the feedback our service users provide.
