Discussion Topic 8 the Da Vinci Code Discussion Topic 8 The Da Vinci Code Perhaps you have seen Rosslyn Chapel before? Some of the final scenes of the movie ‘The Da Vinci Code’ take place in Rosslyn Chapel. Here, the main character, Robert Langdon ends up in Rosslyn Chapel after he cracks a code hidden in an ancient object. He visits the Chapel with Sophie Neveu, a young French woman who has followed him all over Europe trying to find the killer of her grandfather. Her grandfather, it seems, wanted to pass on a great secret to her, but was killed before he could do so. Their travels take them to many famous places in Europe, many of which have been linked with stories of the Holy Grail and of the Knights Templar, and many of which are linked to the idea of the Rose. Solving the secret of the cryptex was at the heart of The Da Vinci Code. At Rosslyn Chapel, Langdon and Sophie meet a mysterious group of people. These are people who are part of a secret The secret is that the Grail was Mary Magdalene, the carrier organisation. This organisation has protected the secret of of Jesus’ children. They reveal that Mary was once buried in the Holy Grail since the time of Jesus. Rosslyn Chapel. They also reveal that Sophie is a descendent of Mary and so a living descendent of Jesus. They vow to protect her for the rest of her life. This film is based on a book by Dan Brown. Some say this book should just be treated as an interesting read and not as containing any truth. Others believe there is truth in his book. There are many different opinions about Dan Brown’s book and there can be quite heated discussion about it. Is The Da Vinci Code just an interesting book and enjoyable movie? Does it mix up facts and fiction so that we don’t know which is which any more? Is Rosslyn Chapel’s place in the story just part of a made-up story? Or did the Chapel really play such a big part in the tale because it does indeed hold the secret of the Holy Grail or of Mary Magdalene? Is The Da Vinci Code pointing to the truth or just a story? INTRODUCTION Dan Brown’s book, The Da Vinci Code,1 gives a fictional account of a Harvard researcher named Robert Langdon. In the story, Langdon is called upon to analyze Leonardo Da Vinci’s work and decode its hidden mysteries. What he uncovers is an elaborate scheme of secret societies, religious conspiracies, and centuries old cover ups. His investigation does not sit well with the religious establishment and he quickly becomes a marked man. So goes the plot of this entertaining and influential novel. Dan Brown’s novel has generated no shortage of analysis. Charity www.bethestaryouare.org Digital Fortress is a science fiction book about TRANSLATR, a code in the NSA that, if released, would carry massive implications for national security and US intelligence. The code is written by Tankando, a former NSA employee who felt that the NSA’s intrusions into the private lives of citizens were unjustified. When people in the NSA attempt to break it, they find that it is impossible to break. The NSA hires Susan Fletcher, a cryptographer (expert in coding/decoding), to locate a password that would allow the NSA to stop TRANSLATR. Throughout the plot, Susan encounters various complications that prevent her discovery of the code, including the death of Tankando. This was one of the best science fiction books I have read. Suspenseful cliffhangers throughout the novel kept my eyes glued after every chapter. My favorite parts of the book were definitely the plot twists, which were abundant. The best surprise was a revelation about the person who created TRANSLATR. However, I cannot tell you all of the surprises; you will have to read the book to find out! On the other hand, the book was not without faults. Some of the information presented about cryptology and the NSA weren’t entirely accurate. If you’re especially interested in those fields, the book may not be the best source. However, the slight inaccuracies don’t take away from the plot. In addition, the various perspectives in the book were sometimes difficult to follow, especially if you read the book in many sittings.

    Movie Review: ‘Inferno’ By John Mulderig Catholic News Service NEW YORK – While not exactly hellish, “Inferno” (Columbia), director Ron Howard’s screen version of Dan Brown’s 2013 novel, does produce some of the purgatorial tedium of sitting around in a dentist’s waiting room or standing at a bus stop. On the up side, Catholic viewers will be glad to note that neither their faith nor the early history of their church is trampled on, as they both were so blatantly in Brown’s best-known work, “The Da Vinci Code.” In fact, aside from a few scenes set in such famous locales as St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice and the baptistery of Florence’s cathedral, the church is entirely absent as “symbology” professor Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) embarks on another of his globetrotting cultural scavenger hunts. The chase begins in confusion: Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital afflicted with amnesia only to find himself, mere moments later, being shot at by an assassin (Ana Ularu) disguised as a police officer. He escapes, thanks in large measure to the help of British-bred emergency room physician Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones). An intellectual prodigy, Dr. Brooks has been a fan of Langdon’s books since childhood.
