GEOLOGY OF EASTERN GHATS IN ANDHRA PRADESH BY A. SRIRAaMADAS (Geology Departrael;t, Andhra UMversity, Waltair) Received October 2, 1967 (Communicated by Prof. C. S. Pi¢lmmuthu,t.A.sc.) ABSTRACT The lithology, structure, metamorphism and stratigraphy of the granite gneisses, charnoekite series, khondalite series and .granites occur- ring in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh are described. The granite gneisses consist of the garnetiferous granite gneiss, the grey granite gneiss and porphyritic granite gneiss. The charnockite series consists of granite, diorite, gabbro, norite, amphibolite and pyroxenite. The khondalite series comprises gneisses, schists, quattzites, and granulites, metamorphosed from argillaceous, arenaceous and calcareous sediments. The granites include the pink granites and pegmatites. The formations are highly folded with thrusts and strike slip faults. The granite gneisses, charnockite series and khondalite series are metamorphosed to the gra. nulite facies, with a few members in the amphibolite facies and occasional members in the eclogite facies. Some granite gneisses are the oldest rocks present, and others contempolaneous with charnockite selies, which are themselves older than or contemporaneous with the khondalite series. The pink granites and pegmatites are the youngest rocks of the region. LOCATION TttE Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh are situated between Latitudes 16° and 19 °, and Longitudes 80 ° and 85 ° , and stretch for about 350 miles from Srikakulam District in the north, through Visakhapatnam, Godavari and Krishna Districts, to Guntur District in the south. They include Kurupam, Madugula, Anantagiri, Gudem, Chodavaram, Papikonda, Kondapalli and Kondavidu hill ranges. GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS Fermor ~1936) included the Eastern Ghsts in the garnetiferous type (manganese ore) marble provine belonging to the charnockite region.

But due How well loosely arranged rock (such as sand and to Rapid urbanization, industrialization and improper gravel) holds water depends on the size and shape of the rock disposal of waste that polluting even groundwater. particles. Layers of loosely arranged particles of uniform size Objective of this study is to assess and map the spatial tend to hold more water than layers of rock with materials of distribution of groundwater quality in Guntur District different sizes. This is because smaller rock materials can Andhra Pradesh, using geographical information system relax in space between larger rocks, decreasing the space (GIS). As the capital region is laid in between Guntur and available to hold water. It is usually much cleaner than surface Krishna district. Groundwater is the main source for water. Source of ground water is rain and snow that falls to the industrialization and urbanization. Here the physical and ground a portion of which percolates down into the ground to chemical properties analytical data of groundwater sample become ground water.25-40% of world population is using data of 30 well points of various regions in Guntur district groundwater for drinking purpose.

  • Application of Water Balance Technique in the Drought Analysis of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh
Pramana Research Journal ISSN NO: 2249-2976 Application of Water balance technique in the Drought analysis of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh Dr.N.Chandrayudu Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, S. V. University, Thirupathi (India) Email: [email protected] G S Srinivasa Gopinath Assistant Professor, VLITS, Dept.of BS& H, Vadlamudi 522213 India Email: [email protected] Abstract Water balance is one of the important techniques used in the studies of climatology, hydrology and agro climatology. It is helpful in the evaluation of various hydrological elements like water storage, water surplus and water deficit, which in turn provide quantitative solutions to many hydrological questions, in a given region (Hemamalini, 1993). Drought is weather related hazard and cannot be visualized like any other weather hazard. Moreover, accurate prediction is also not possible. However, water balance technique enables to carry out drought analysis. It is a perfect tool to identify the years of drought, their frequencies, and intensities. To understand the vulnerability of each mandal of the district to droughts, drought analysis has been carried out. Index of aridity (i.e. the ratio between water deficit and water need of the area) is the key parameter used to identify the drought incidences. The analysis shows that all the representative stations of the district are prone to droughts. From the study, it is inferred that Guntur district has been prone to droughts/famines from time immemorial. The incidence of droughts is on the increase which was indicated through the analysis of decennial frequency. The overall drought proneness in all the mandals was above 40 percent.
