Jane Hafen, Examination Committee Chair Professor of English University of Nevada, Las Vegas The literature of the American West, much like the history of this region, is replete with images and stories of violence. Although pop culture (i.e. popular Westerns, film, television, etc.) has inculcated the idea that the West is synonymous with violence, the origins of this supposition begins with the arrival of Europeans to the New World, which, at the point of discovery, signified the West. European conquerors and colonists brought with them, along with their hopes and dreams for a fresh start on the new continent, the Judeo-Christian cultural values and traditions of the old continent. This ideological position condoned violent interaction with and subjugation of the wilderness that lay before them, which Europeans invariably gendered female. As commercial, political, and religious interests moved the frontier westward across the continent, from the Atlantic seaboard, beyond the Great Plains, over the Rocky Mountains, and to the Pacific Coast, a wake of broken, tamed, and violated feminine bodies followed. The works of Frank Norris, Sarah Winnemucca (Northern Paiute), and Terry Tempest Williams detail and examine the means, motivations, and implications of violence on the feminine-gendered 111 Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. As Norris, Winnemucca, and Williams demonstrate, violence committed against the feminine does not have simply regional ramifications but cultural and global consequences as well. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION: MASCULINE "MIGHT MAKES RIGHT": THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST THE FEMININE IN WESTERN AMERICAN LITERATURE The literature of the American West, much like the history of this region, is replete with images and stories of violence.     The Poetics of Provincialism: Mormon Regional Fiction EDWARD A. GEARY THE LATTER-DAY SAINTS have been a source of sensationalistic subject matter for popular novelists almost since the beginning of the Church. But the Mormon novel as a treatment of Mormon materials from a Mormon point of view has come from two main wellsprings. The first was the "home literature" movement of the 1880s, the goal of which, according to Orson F. Whitney, was to produce a "pure and powerful literature" as an instrument for spreading the gospel, a literature which, "like all else with which we have to do, must be made subservient to the building up of Zion."1 Even though its early practitioners are little read today—Nephi Anderson is the chief exception—the influence of home literature remains strong. It provides the guiding principles by which fiction and poetry are selected for the official church magazines, and it is also reflected in such popular works in Mormondom as Saturday's Warrior and Beyond This Moment. However, home literature has not had the impact on the world that Brother Whitney hoped for. It has not led to the development of "Miltons and Shakespeares of our own."2 Good fiction is seldom written to ideological specifications. It is one thing to ask the artist to put his religious duties before his literary vocation or to write from his deepest convictions. It is quite another to insist that he create from a base in dogma rather than a base in experience. Good fiction, as Virginia Sorensen has said, is "one person's honest report upon life,"3 and in home literature the report usually fails to ring true.

The version below, a slightly revised and updated version of the one that appeared in David J. Whittaker, ed., Mormon Americana: A Guide to Sources and Collections in the United States (Provo, Utah: BYU Studies, 1995), 455–505, is the one that appeared in the tribute issue Irreantum published following England’s death. Originally published in: Irreantum 3, no. 3 (Autumn 2001): 67–93. This, the single most comprehensive essay on the history and theory of Mormon literature, first appeared in 1982 and has been republished and expanded several times in keeping up with developments in Mormon letters and Eugene England’s own thinking.     Of Many Hearts and Many Minds: The Mormon Novel and the Post-Utopian Challenge of Assimilation by Scott Hales A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English & Comparative Literature APPROVED: Jay Twomey, Chair Jennifer Glaser Leland S. Person March 26, 2014 Cincinnati, OH For much of their nineteenth-century history, Mormons rejected the novel as worldly entertainment that corrupted the young and propagated offensive Mormon stereotypes. This changed, however, when Mormons began to recognize the form’s potential for promoting social betterment, teaching wholesome moral values, and using its popular appeal to draw people to the Mormon fold. Interestingly, this shift in attitude toward the novel came at a time when the Mormons, once a militantly separatist people, sought greater assimilation with the American mainstream by abandoning overt utopian practices, like polygamy and communal living, for practices that would no longer alienate them from the nation’s Protestant majority. In my dissertation, I explore the relationship between this transitional period and the development of the Mormon novel, arguing that Mormons embraced the novel as a cultural site for mediating their paradoxical desire to separate from and participate in the American mainstream. Indeed, I show how the novel allowed Mormons to express their utopian principles—if not their utopian practices—as mainstream America compelled them to take what I call a “post-utopian” stance toward society. Moreover, I show how adopting the novel form also enabled Mormons to contribute to and engage American literary culture, construct Mormon identities, and explore their ambivalent encounters with others from inside and outside their ranks.

Austin: The Brief History and Perpetually Exciting Future of Mormon Liter Essay The Brief History and PerKetually Exciting Future of Mormon Literary Studies Michael Austin In the middle years of the 1970s, Mormon literary studies seemed on the verge of becoming a big deal. Since 1966, Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought had been publishing poetry, literary fiction, and literary criticism by and about Latter-day Saints. And in 1974, a bold new magazine called Sunstone began publishing similar fare for a less academic audience. The same year, Richard Cracroft and Neal Lambert published the first edition of A Believing People, the first anthology of Mormon literature ever, to be used as the textbook in their Mormon literature course at Brigham Young University. And in 1976, the Asso- ciation for Mormon Letters (AML) held its first annual symposium in the Empire Room of the Hotel Utah, featuring papers on Mormonism and literature by such luminaries as Cracroft, Leonard Arrington, Bruce Jorgensen, and Arthur Henry King.1 For the next thirty-five years, the AML served as a nursemaid, shepherd, and cheerleader for the study of Mormon literature, hosting an annual symposium and giving awards for achievement in literary endeavors.

    Juanita Brooks and Fawn Brodie—Sisters in Mormon Dissent Newell G. Bringhurst THE FIFTEENTH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE Utah State Historical Society held on 23 September 1967 at the University of Utah brought together for the first time, in the same place, and at the same time three distinguished Utah-born scholars who were also well-known dissenters in the field of Utah/Mormon history. The first of these was Juanita Brooks, author of The Mountain Meadows Massacre and the controversial biography John Doyle Lee: Zealot-Pioneer Builder-Scapegoat, who was present by virtue of her position as a member of the Utah State Board of History. Also present was Dale L. Morgan, staff member of the Bancroft Library and author of several books and of three important definitive essays focusing on dis- senting factions within Mormonism that emerged in the wake of Joseph Smith's 1844 death. Morgan had been invited from California, to deliver the featured keynote address. The third scholar, who, like Morgan, had travelled from California was Fawn M. Brodie, author of the highly controversial No Man Knows My History: The Life of Joseph Smith for which she had been excommunicated from the Mormon church in 1946. Brodie had been invited to receive the Utah Historical Society's most prestigious honor—its Fellow Award. Brodie made clear her role as a leading dissenter of Mormonism's past in what she termed her "two-and-one-half minute" acceptance speech. This "honor [had] a special quality," she noted, because it represented "a tribute to the right to dissent about the past." Brodie in discussing the past explained: "I never return to Utah without being forcibly reminded of the overwhelming significance of the past in this area." All rights reserved 2 3 Juanita Brooks Dr. Richard Saunders Juanita Brooks was a professor at [then] Dixie College for many years Dr. Richard Saunders is an academic librarian and former Dean of and became a well-known author. She is recognized, by scholarly Library Services at Southern Utah University. A graduate of Utah consensus, to be one of Utah’s and Mormondom’s most eminent State University, he holds graduate degrees in history from USU historians. Her total honesty, unwavering courage, and perceptive and the University of Memphis. His career in history has centered interpretation of fact set more stringent standards of scholarship for on preserving the sources of history as a Certified Archivist and her fellow historians to emulate.
