RESPECT LIFE

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

BEATITUDES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

BLESSED ARE YOU who take time to listen to difficult speech, for you help us to know that if we persevere we can be understood.

BLESSED ARE YOU who walk with us in public places, and ignore the stares of strangers, for in your friendship we feel good to be ourselves.

BLESSED ARE YOU who never bid us to "hurry up" and, more blessed, you who do not snatch our tasks from our hands to do them for us, for often we need time rather than help.

BLESSED ARE YOU who stand beside us as we enter new and untried ventures, for our unsured- ness will be outweighed by the times when we surprise ourselves and you.

BLESSED ARE YOU who ask for our help and realize our giftedness for our greatest need is to be needed.

BLESSED ARE YOU who help us with the graciousness of Christ, for often we need the help we cannot ask for.

BLESSED ARE YOU when, by all things, you assure us that what makes us individuals is not our particular disability or difficulty but our beautiful God-given personhood which no handicapping condition can confine.

REJOICE AND BE EXCEEDINGLY GLAD for your understanding and love have opened doors for us to enjoy life to its full and you have helped us believe in ourselves as valued and gifted people.

This month, we will highlight various disabilities and provide suggestions for positive interactions with a person having that disability.

BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED

There’s no “secret” to interacting with people who are visually impaired or deaf. They just want to be treated like everybody else, with courtesy and re- spect. So relax and act naturally. Just be considerate of the fact that you can see and hear and they cannot.

Here are suggestions that will make your next interaction with someone who is visually impaired easier and more comfortable:

Identify yourself - don't assume the person will recognize you by your voice.

Speak naturally and clearly. Loss of eyesight does not mean loss of hearing.

Continue to use body language. This will affect the tone of your voice and give a lot of extra information to the person who is vision impaired.

Use everyday language. Don't avoid words like "see" or "look" or talking about everyday activities such as watching TV or videos.

Name the person when introducing yourself or when directing conversation to them in a group situation.

Never channel conversation through a third person.

In a group situation, introduce the other people present.

Never leave a conversation with a person without saying so.

Use accurate and specific language when giving directions. For example, "the door is on your left", rather than "the door is over there".

Avoid situations where there is competing noise.

Always ask first to check if help is needed.

 Relax and be yourself.

GENERAL TIPS FOR INTERACTING WITH A DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING PERSON

Move into the person’s visual field.

Gently tap on the person’s shoulder.

 Do not mumble.

If the person prefers to use speech-reading, speak normally and avoid speaking too slow or too fast.

Do not over emphasize your facial expressions or lip movements as this can reduce communication.

Face the person and make eye contact when speaking.

If you use written communication, make sure you are understood.

Pictures and other visual aids may be helpful.

Take advantage of technology by typing back and forth on a computer screen, using email, instant messenger or text messaging.

 Avoid excess background noise.

 Be patient and relaxed.

Be sure to ask the deaf or hard of hearing person for ways to improve communication.
