In this issue, by coincidence, two of our contributors explore this topic. Molly Backes in her Writer’s Tip says: “Personally, I’m in favor of unlikable characters. We are writing about teenagers, after all! They’re not the most likable creatures in the universe. Lovable, sure. But not always likable.” Juliet Bond, in her review of Blake Snyder’s book Save the Cat: The Last Book on Screenwriting You’ll Ever Need for the Writer’s Bookshelf, says, “I’m personally drawn to characters that are a bit prickly, rebellious, and less than charming. But they have to be likable.” See what you think. In our previous issue Lisa Bierman said goodbye. In this issue our new co-regional advisor Deborah Topolski introduces herself: “I’m a prepublished member, still learning how to make inroads in my career . I’m on this journey to publication with you.” Another change in this issue is in the format of our Illustrator in the Spotlight column. A panel of Illinois illustrators has compiled a set of questions that each issue’s featured illustrator will answer. Today’s topic is “The Nature and Function of Conscience.” • During this Zoom Video Webinar you will not be able to see other participants or interact with anyone. It is a view-only format. We hope this learning experience in the quiet and privacy of your own home will help you in your ethical decision-making. Introduction Our focus today will be on the human conscience. It is likely that you have never heard a lecture or sermon on this subject. If you have, you are one of the few, for it is a subject that has been mostly neglected in contemporary society and in the Christian church. It should not be surprising, then, that when it is mentioned in conversation, neither party typically knows what the word means or what the role of conscience should be in their lives. The reason it is important to understand the nature and function of the conscience is because it is a “priceless gift from God.” He created us in His image (imago Dei) and gave us a conscience in order that we might learn how to love Him and live under His lordship and authority. Introduction As we begin our time together, consider the following questions: • What is the conscience? • How does it work? • Does it always judge correctly? • Can it change? • How can I take care of my conscience? • How can I keep from damaging it? Introduction Just by asking these questions, we are admitting that there is something “real” about the conscience, even if it is difficult to define or describe. -

Since Geppetto created Pinocchio with performance and entertain- ment in mind, it is not surprising to note how much interest the boy-pup- pet has attracted in cinema, theatre, and television. Cinema and television have given Pinocchio undivided attention for almost a century. Data shows that the story of the puppet generated approximately twenty feature film adaptations, 2 to which one should add the European co-production direct- ed by Steve Barron ( 1 996) and, of course, Roberto Benigni's Pinocchio, released in October 2002. Pinocchio the character attracts the media and continues to inspire cinema. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract The myth of Pinocchio is the story of a puppet that desires to become human and achieves it with the power of his will. Created by Carlo Collodi in The Adventures of Pinocchio, the myth of Pinocchio is linked to the fairy tale tradition and is the most recent manifestation of the animate/inanimate archetype. This thesis is the first systematic study of the Pinocchio myth and examines how it has been used and reinterpreted in different retellings across different media and disciplines. The first part of this study focuses on Pinocchio retellings in film and shows that the most contemporary example of the Pinocchio myth is in the story of the sentient cyborg/robot that desires humanity. Moving from the classic in the field of cyborg studies Blade Runner through Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence, which directly links the robot to Pinocchio, to the least technophobic and most transhumanist Battlestar Galactica, Chapter 1 demonstrates how all case studies are connected to Collodi’s novel through the confrontation scene, a specific passage in the text which touches upon the core of the Pinocchio myth, as Pinocchio is confronted both by the Blue Fairy and his corporeality. -

Bohn (guest essay)* Cliff Edwards Given the dramatic contour of the melody, and the well-crafted, optimistic message of the lyrics, the success of “When You Wish Upon a Star” is not surprising. It won an Academy Award for Best Song, was named by ASCAP as the most performed feature film standard, and was declared the seventh greatest song from a movie by the American Film Institute. The tune has also become a corporate anthem for The Walt Disney Company, suitably encapsulating the company’s common theme of dreams and wishes. However, this use of corporate exploitation in no way diminishes the perfection of this well-crafted song, its sentiment, or its impeccable performance. Born in Hannibal, Missouri, in 1895, Cliff Edwards started singing in saloons when he was 14 years old. He took up the ukulele, as he had no one to accompany him, and it was the cheapest accompanying instrument he could find. Dubbed “Ukulele Ike” by a waiter at Chicago’s Arsonia Café, who had trouble remembering his name, the nickname stuck for the rest of his career. JAMIE FOSTER PHOTOGRAPHY “Pinocchio” is a great opportunity to introduce children to live theatre. The young actors of San Luis Obispo Little Theatre’s Academy of Creative Theatre bring the adventures of the classic puppet to life in the intimate space where the youngsters in the audience have a close-up view of those on the stage. With colorful ethnic-style costumes and some innovative effects, an ensemble of 24 tells the tale of the wooden puppet who longs to become a real boy but succumbs to tricks and temptations along the way. Director Shelagh Garren and ACT coordinator Kerry DiMaggio choose plays with themes that the performers can discuss during rehearsals and that can provide a learning experience as they hone their theatrical skills, Garren said. This one looks at how we tell right from wrong, reacting to peer pressure, what it means to love and to be human, and the importance of education — and of course, telling the truth, as Pinocchio sees his nose grow longer when he doesn’t. Trevyn Wong is a delightful Pinocchio, starting out innocent and vulnerable but becoming mischievous and rebellious, until in the end, he makes a life-threatening effort to save his “papa,” Geppetto, the woodcarver who created him.
