The Birds Who Sing Words Enjoy delightful songs performed by a chorus led by 4 colorful macaws named Jose, Michael, Pierre and Fritz. Laugh, clap and sing-along as they are joined in song by a total of 225 animated performers — including assorted toucans, parrots, showgirl cockatoos, crooning flowers, drumming Tiki statues and chanting wooden masks. The Pre-Show The magic starts even before you enter the Enchanted Tiki Room. The Tiki gods encircling a lush garden spring to life and introduce themselves. While you wait, take the opportunity to purchase a treat from the Tiki Juice Bar. Taste a Pineapple Dole Whip—a classic treat treasured by both Guests and Tiki Birds. Tiki Juice Bar Take a vacation to a tropical paradise where tangy pineapples are the main ingredient for an assortment of refreshing treats — including pineapple whips, spears and juices. Hosted by Dole®. Indiana Jones™ Adventure Enter the legendary Temple of the Forbidden Eye on a daring journey in search of unimaginable rewards. Deep inside the temple, you embark on a fast-paced thrill ride aboard a rugged troop transport. There are ominous signs of danger ahead, but, with famous archaeologist Indiana Jones on your side, what could possibly go wrong? The Temple of the Forbidden Eye Step with trepidation into a newly uncovered archeological dig site hidden in India's Lost Delta. Follow in Indy's footsteps and uncover evidence that the overgrown temple is not entirely benign. Venture past deadly booby traps that have been hastily disabled. Study carvings and frescos that tell the story of Mara — a powerful ancient deity who promised great treasures to the pure of heart and death to those foolish enough to gaze into its all- seeing eyes. Join a tour set up by Indy's friend Sallah and see how he's ingeniously arranged mirrors to avoid looking into the cursed eyes of Mara. But something is amiss, as tourists have started to mysteriously disappear. Indiana Jones went into the temple to investigate. He never came out. 7 The Vengeful Wrath of Mara Do you dare to discover the truth behind these alarming stories? Will you really be pulled into eternal torment through the Gates of Doom? Could legends about caverns of bubbling death, screaming undead mummies, erupting lava, evil wraiths and giant snakes really be true? As your expedition careens around precarious precipices and narrowly escapes collapsing bridges, you'll wish you never dared to test the wrath of Mara! Only one man can save you now…Indiana Jones. 3 Treasures Mara is said to grant earthly riches, eternal youth or knowledge of the future. Discover which treasure Mara will grant you. Each ride is different! Troop Transports Indiana Jones Adventure is neither a roller coaster nor a typical slow-speed attraction like the Haunted Mansion. You'll board a 12-person troop transport for a fast-paced thrill ride that realistically simulates driving fast over rough terrain. The experience is truly unique...and truly exciting. Your Belongings Cargo nets are provided in front of every seat to store your loose possessions. You're in for a bumpy ride, so be sure to use them! Jungle Cruise Board a trusty tramp steamer for a 7-minute guided tour of jungles from around the world, brimming with exotic animals and lush tropical foliage. Keep an eye out for potential perils — and stunning beauty — as your daring skipper navigates untamed waters with a skilled hand, a brave heart and a clever joke. Welcome to the world famous Jungle Cruise! Jungles Depart civilization from a forgotten Victorian loading dock. Crossing continents and oceans, you'll explore exciting rivers around the world — including the Amazon of South America, the Nile of Africa, the Irrawaddy of Southeast Asia and the Ganges of India. Animals Experience up-close encounters with animals both beautiful and savage. Discover giant butterflies, growling tigers, hissing king cobras, snapping crocodiles, majestic elephants, mischievous gorillas, proud lions and angry hippos. Tarzan's Treehouse Tarzan's Treehouse tells the story of Tarzan's wild jungle upbringing and showcases his improvised living conditions. Tour Tarzan's home, built high in an 80-foot-tall tree, and see what it's like to live on the wild side! The Tree The 150-ton mammoth tree has 450 branches containing over 6,000 leaves. Its scientific name is Disneydendron semperflorens grandis or "large ever-blooming Disney tree." As you 8 near the top, you're treated to astonishingly beautiful views of Adventureland far below you. Overgrown with vines and constructed with salvaged parts from Tarzan's parents' shipwreck, the tree house features vignettes from Tarzan's life story. Look for illustrations from Jane's sketchbook that provide the details of how Tarzan was saved from the savage Sabor, raised by a kindly gorilla and fell in love. Base Camp Once you've experienced the tree house, you're invited to investigate Jane's collection of scientific equipment and improvised cooking gear at the base of the tree. Inspect a magic lantern, play with musical pots, and pull vines for a delightful assortment of fun surprises. Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes Paddle around the Rivers of America on a grand sightseeing adventure aboard Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes. Named after the legendary frontiersman, Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes transport you back to a time before highways, when water was the fastest mode of transportation and an exciting new discovery was around every river bend. The Rivers of America The canoe voyage will take you in a full circle around Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island. Along the banks of the Rivers of America, you'll see sights and sounds from 3 different lands — including the backwoods of Frontierland, the wrought-iron railings of New Orleans Square and the peak of Chick-A-Pin Hill towering over Critter Country. Also along the river's edge, sharp-eyed explorers can observe: The rustic cabin of a frontier settler An idyllic Native American village Busy beavers at work on a dam A moose enjoying a leisurely lunch An ominous mansion lurking in the shadows A skunk staring down raccoons Mountain lions relaxing in the sun An osprey guarding it's nest The Disneyland Railroad steaming into the wilderness While you'll get a very unique perspective of the Rivers of America from the Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes, the attraction follows the same path as two larger ships: the Mark Twain Riverboat and the Sailing Ship Columbia. The Canoes The 20-passager vessels are real, old-fashioned canoes — there is no motor and no track. Modeled after the boats that early Native American and European explorers used to traverse the real rivers of America, these 35-foot-long canoes are powered entirely by the strong arms and paddles of the people inside. 9 Don't worry about the workload! The boats are lightweight and most of the paddling is more for fun than propulsion. While your help is appreciated, the river guides who sit in the fore and aft of the canoe are capable enough of navigating the waters by themselves. Splash Mountain Take a musical journey aboard a hollowed-out log through a colorful bayou populated with cheerful critters. One of the most elaborate Disneyland Park attractions, Splash Mountain culminates in a daring 5-story plunge down rustic Chick-A-Pin Hill. Brer Rabbit's Adventures During the approximately 9-minute water flume voyage, a cast of 103 backwoods critters tell the tale of carefree Brer Rabbit's plucky escapades as he strikes out on his own in search of a little bit of adventure. Drift past unforgettable sights and sounds that recreate memorable scenes from the classic Disney film Song of the South — including the pursuit of the crafty Brer Rabbit by the scheming Brer Fox and his bumbling partner in crime, Brer Bear. The Plunge You can preview the climatic plunge from the front of Splash Mountain and get a sense of what you are in for. Or can you? The logs appear to race down Chick-A-Pin Hill towards the Briar Patch...and then mysteriously disappear with a tremendous splash. The Secret of the Briar Patch Brer Rabbit pretends to be frightened by the Briar Patch, but he has a secret. The Briar Patch is actually his favorite hideaway: his laughing place. Take the plunge down Splash Mountain and discover Brer Rabbit's laughing place for yourself! FANTASYLAND Alice in Wonderland Alice in Wonderland is a whimsical ride through scenes from the 1951 animated Disney classic Alice in Wonderland. Join Alice on a journey down an enchanted rabbit hole and into the topsy-turvy realm of Wonderland. Down the Rabbit Hole Hop aboard your 4-person caterpillar and follow the White Rabbit to an off-the-wall kingdom. Wind through Wonderland surrounded by surreal sights, brilliant colors and madcap music. Among the zany inhabitants, you'll meet: Mad Hatter stout twins Tweedledee and Tweedledum enigmatic Caterpillar vanishing Cheshire Cat talking Doorknob 10 garden of singing flowers featuring a Rocking-Horsefly, Tiger Lilly, Dandy-Lion and Bread-and-Butterfly Down and down you go, until you encounter the Queen of Hearts.

Lillie JOMC 242 History Paper 5/3/02 Park Doctoral Fellow The School of Journalism and Mass Communication The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Lillie, Disney, 2 Abstract This paper offers a historical analysis of Disney’s corporate exhibits at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, GE’s “Carousel of Progress” and Ford’s “Magic Skyway,” in an attempt to consider their historical and cultural significance. The coming together of Disney’s legacy of nostalgic entertainment achieved via his desire and skill in “improving” the past and future with the equally strong desire of corporate giants to sell themselves and their products is presented here as a case study of the processes of cultural creation: how and why specific discourses of technology and consumption are written in to these narratives of the past and the future. Introduction Between April 22, 1964 and October 17, 1965 fifty-one million people experienced the New York World’s Fair.1 The mid-1960s was a time of both turmoil and prosperity for America. President Kennedy had been assassinated only months before the Fair’s opening. In southern states such as Alabama the civil rights protest movement was drawing national attention. While cold war tensions remained high following the Cuban Missile Crisis, the nation was enjoying the height of postwar economic prosperity and geo-political power. The Fair’s twin themes of “Man’s Achievements in an Expanding Universe” and “A Millennium of Progress” captured the exuberance of the times, celebrating “the boundless potential of science and technology for human betterment.”2 The 1939 New York World’s Fair was in many ways a predecessor to the 1964-65 exhibition.

  • The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson
MA 330.004 / MA430.005 /AMST 341.002 Fall 2016 Revised: 10-7-16 The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson Course Description: From his early years as a child star on the Chitlin’ Circuit and at Motown Records, through the concert rehearsal documentary This is It (released shortly after his death in 2009), Michael Jackson left a rich legacy of recorded music, televised performances, and short films (a description he preferred to “music video”). In this course we’ll look at Jackson’s artistic work as key to his vast influence on popular culture over the past 50 years. While we will emphasize the short films he starred in (of which Thriller is perhaps the most famous), we will also listen to his music, view his concert footage and TV appearances (including some rare interviews) and explore the few feature films in which he appeared as an actor/singer/dancer (The Wiz, Moonwalker). We’ll read from a growing body of scholarly writing on Jackson’s cultural significance, noting the ways he drew from a very diverse performance and musical traditions—including minstrelsy, the work of dance/choreography pioneers like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and soul/funk legends like James Brown and Jackie Wilson—to craft a style uniquely his own. Crucially, we will ask how Jackson’s shifting public persona destabilize categories of gender, sexuality, and race----in a manner that was very different from his contemporaries: notably, the recently-deceased David Bowie and Prince. Elevated to superstardom and then made an object of the voracious cultural appetite for scandal, Michael Jackson is now increasingly regarded as a singularly influential figure in the history of popular music and culture.

  • Michael Jackson's Gesamtkunstwerk
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 5 (November 2015) Michael Jackson’s Gesamtkunstwerk: Artistic Interrelation, Immersion, and Interactivity From the Studio to the Stadium Sylvia J. Martin Michael Jackson produced art in its most total sense. Throughout his forty-year career Jackson merged art forms, melded genres and styles, and promoted an ethos of unity in his work. Jackson’s mastery of combined song and dance is generally acknowledged as the hallmark of his performance. Scholars have not- ed Jackson’s place in the lengthy soul tradition of enmeshed movement and mu- sic (Mercer 39; Neal 2012) with musicologist Jacqueline Warwick describing Jackson as “embodied musicality” (Warwick 249). Jackson’s colleagues have also attested that even when off-stage and off-camera, singing and dancing were frequently inseparable for Jackson. James Ingram, co-songwriter of the Thriller album hit “PYT,” was astonished when he observed Jackson burst into dance moves while recording that song, since in Ingram’s studio experience singers typically conserve their breath for recording (Smiley). Similarly, Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime studio recording engineer, told National Public Radio, “Re- cording [with Jackson] was never a static event. We used to record with the lights out in the studio, and I had him on my drum platform. Michael would dance on that as he did the vocals” (Swedien ix-x). Surveying his life-long body of work, Jackson’s creative capacities, in fact, encompassed acting, directing, producing, staging, and design as well as lyri- cism, music composition, dance, and choreography—and many of these across genres (Brackett 2012).
