The Illustration Game: Quotes and Notes Jaleen Grove The Illustration Game, published in Communication Arts magazine, is an artwork that critically evaluates and satirizes the illustration industry 1959-2019. It conceives of the time period in the form of a board game in which players roll a die to advance along a path, accumulating points or losing them according to typical events of each decade. The path winds through a forest of quotations that were said in print at the time or shortly after by leading illustrators and critics. For the quotations to read properly and succinctly, wording was very slightly modified in some cases. The sources and the quotes without modification are given here for those who wish to see context and origin. This document only discusses the quotations that appear in the black background.

David G Colton A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Manchester School of Art Manchester Metropolitan University 2019 1 | David Colton Abstract: My practice involves re-imagining aleatory art systems and practices to create products that push the user into a direct relationship with chance. Initial research revealed that modernist aleatory practices have largely been recuperated into the canon of contemporary art techniques. It was my intention to re- invigorate these practices by re-imagining them in a new context outside of art practice: to change perspectives, ‘reality tunnels’ and to transcend culture and social conditioning. There are differences between work that has been made using chance in the creative process, and work that pushes the artist or viewer into chance encounters and situations and exploring the differences between them has been an important part of this project. The resulting works situate the user within the chance process, and in effect, make them the subject of their own experimentation and practice. My insights and discoveries develop out of a range of experimental artistic works that critically examine the re-imagining and commodification of chance processes. This thesis documents the development of each work in a series of chapters which also explain the research and developmental processes, in addition to setting the works in a theoretical and contextual framework.

Increasingly heterogeneous reading contexts not only highlight the need to extend comparative analysis to include formerly marginalized texts; they also challenge traditional analytical categories informing comparative literature as a discipline. This dissertation proposes that the notion of the implied reader, central to reader-response criticism based on hermeneutic conventions, has to be rethought in order to account for readers who cannot engage with a given text in an unimpeded relationship of dialogue; this is especially the case when literary texts revolve around histories of violence. Through an analysis of literary works by three European emigré writers, Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), Peter Weiss (1916-1982), and W. G. Sebald (1944-2001), this study highlights postimperial, postgenocidal and post-Cold War reading positions that challenge the traditional hermeneutic sense of a textual horizon of understanding. The study further argues that comparative analysis of situated reading needs to go beyond constructivist notions of reading, which make it difficult to grasp relationships between literature and history. This analysis proposes instead that historical pressures in the twentieth century require comparative literature to address not only implied but also various unimplied and unwelcome reading positions that engage twentieth-century history in displaced yet material ways that manifest in literary form.
