Gardner was a three-year lettermen at USC (1930-32) and was Justin “Sam” Barry, USC’s winningest coach ever, started out a captain his senior year, playing under legendary coach Sam three-sport star at Madison (Wisc.) In the fi rst year of the Galen Center, USC honored some of its legendary players as the jersey numbers were retired for Bill Sharman (No. 11) and Paul Westphal (No. 25) for the men's team and Cheryl Miller (No. 31) and Lisa Leslie (No. 33) for the women's team. Sharman had his jersey retired in a halftime ceremony during the USC-UCLA game on Jan. 13, 2007 and Westphal had his retired at the half of the USC-Arizona game on Jan. 18, 2007. The women's uniform numbers were retired on Nov. 10, 2006 at halftime of the USC-Long Beach State women's basketball game.
