Primarily by way of recent studies, information on these quaUties in early postlarvae has begun to accrue, information which has not been previously summarized. The change in form (metamorphosis) that occurs between larval and postlarval life is pronounced in some decapod groups but subtle in others. However, in almost all the Deca- poda, some ontogenetic changes in locomotion, feeding, and habitat coincide with meta morphosis and early postlarval growth. The postmetamorphic (first postlarval) stage, here in termed the decapodid, is often a particularly modified transitional stage; terms such as glaucothoe, puerulus, and megalopa have been applied to it. The postlarval stages that fol low the decapodid successively approach more closely the adult form. Morphogenesis of skeletal and other superficial features is particularly apparent at each molt, but histogenesis and organogenesis in early postlarvae is appreciable within intermolt periods. Except for the development of primary and secondary sexual organs, postmetamorphic change in internal anatomy is most pronounced in the first several postlarval instars, with the degree of anatomical reorganization and development decreasing in each of the later juvenile molts. -

By MARY J. RATHBUN, Assistant Curator, Division of Marine Invertebrates, U. S. National Museum. INTKODUCTION. Among the collections obtained by Dr. Robert E. Coker during his investigations of the fishery resources of Peru during 1906-1908 were a large number of Crustacea, representing 80 species. It was the original intention to publish the reports on the Crustacea under one cover, but as it has not been feasible to complete them at the same time, the accounts of the barnacles a and isopods b have been issued first. There remain the decapods, which comprise the bulk of the collection, the stomatopods, and two species of amphipods. One of these, inhabiting the sea-coast, has been determined by Mr. Alfred O. Walker; the other, from Lake Titicaca, by Miss Ada L. Weckel. See papers immediately following. Throughout this paper, the notes printed in smaller type were con tributed by Doctor Coker. One set of specimens has been returned to the Peruvian Government; the other has been given to the United States National Museum. Economic value.—The west coast of South America supports an unusual number of species of large crabs, which form an important article of food. -

E-mail: [email protected] 3Corresponding author Abstract During recent studies of phylogenetic relationships within Eriphioidea (sensu Ng et al. 2008), we recovered molecular evidence that the genus Platyxanthus A. Milne-Edwards, 1863, was not monophyletic. This prompted detailed morphological examination of the group, which confirmed that clear differences in characteristics of the carapace, first male pleopod, antennae, antennules, epistome, abdomen, and thoracic sternum serve to separate the species of Platyxanthus into three distinct groups. Comparison of the type material of Peloeus cokeri (Rathbun, 1930), (formerly Platyxanthus cokeri) to Peloeus armatus Eydoux & Souleyet, 1842, indicated that P. cokeri is a junior synonym of P. armatus and that Gordonoxanthus Števčić, 2011 (type species Platyxanthus cokeri Rathbun, 1930) is thus a junior synonym of Peloeus. Danielethus n. gen. is described to accommodate Platyxanthus patagonicus A. Milne-Edwards, 1863, and Platyxanthus crenulatus A. Milne-Edwards, 1863. -

Martin ABSTRACT The known xanthid crab zoeas can be assigned to six groups, based primarily upon mor phology of the antennal exopod. A brief description of each group is given, and a table listing all known zoeas in each group is presented. The abbreviated number of zoeal stages in some xanthid species seems not attributable solely to restricted environments; however, no alter native reason for abbreviated development in xanthids is known. A key is given for identi fication of 22 xanthid zoeas in the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico for which descriptions are available, and a bibliography of all known descriptions of xanthid larvae is included. The first published mention of a larval stage belonging to the brachyuran family Xanthidae MacLeay, 1838, is a short communication by J. Vaughn Thompson (1836). In this paper, Thompson noted that the larval stages of the genus Eriphia Latreille, 1817 and other brachyuran genera corresponded to the genus Zoea of earlier workers. Since that time, the larvae of crabs of the family Xanthidae {sensu lato, not sensu Guinot, 1978) have received a considerable amount of attention. -

Collins 1,2 1 Department of Palaeontology, The Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD, UK 2 8 Shaw’s Cottages, Perry Rise, London, SE23 2QN, UK Abstract Crabs of Middle Miocene to Early Pleistocene age collected by members of the Panama Paleontology Project are described from the (Caribbean) Southern Limón Basin of Costa Rica and the Canal and Bocas del Toro basins of Panama, the (Isthmian) Chucunaque-Tuira Basin of Panama, and the (East Pacific) Osa-Burica, Parrita and Tempisque basins of Costa Rica. Thirty taxa are identified to species level, of which 25 are described in detail. Of these twelve species are new: Ctenocheles falciformis sp. nov., Dardanus biordines sp. nov., Hepatus biformis sp. nov., Hepatus lineatinus sp. nov., Thoe asperoides sp. nov., Platylambrus spinulatus sp. nov., Speleophorus subcir- cularis sp. nov., Persephona enigmatica sp. nov., Persephona manningi sp. nov., Iliacantha panamanica sp. nov., Euphylax maculatus sp. nov., Lophopanopeus maculoides sp. nov. Two new combinations are proposed; Glypturus toulai nov. comb. for Callianassa toulai Rathbun, 1919a, and Neocallichirus scotti nov. comb. for Callianassa scot- ti Brown and Pilsbry, 1913. A lectotype is designated for Callianassa toulai Rathbun, 1919a. As well as allowing description of new species, the new material includes the first fossil records of the extant genus Speleophorus and the extant species, albeit tentatively identified, Raninoides benedicti Rathbun, 1935a and Panopeus chilensis A. -

SPIVAK RESUMEN En el presente capítulo se exponen los principios de la sistemática del Orden Brachyura (cangrejos), se presenta una lista que contiene las 45 especies identificadas hasta el momento en el Mar Argentino que incluye tanto las autóctonas como las invasoras, se describe brevemente su distribución latitudinal y batimétrica, se detallan los hospedadores conocidos de las distintas especies de la Familia Pinnotheridae (cangrejos arveja) y se actualiza la bibliografía referente al cultivo en laboratorio y la descripción de la morfología larval de los cangrejos locales. ABSTRACT Argentine marine and estuarine crabs (Decapoda: Brachyura). In this chapter the principles of the Brachyura Order (crabs) systematics are explained, a list of the 45 species identified to date in the Argen- tine Sea that includes autochthone and invasive species is presented, a brief account of their latitudinal and bathymetric distribution is offered, the known hosts of the different species of the Pinnotheridae Family (pea crabs) are detailed and updating of the bibliography referred to laboratory culture and description of the larval morphology of local crabs is included. The data matrix was subjected to four different treatments: (1) a cladistic analysis with a combination of unordered and ordered characters, (2) a cladistic analysis with all characters unordered, (3) neighbour-joining, and (4) UPGMA phenetic analyses. -

The number of epibiont barnacles varied from 247 to 1,544 specimens per prawn; these were distributed predominantly on the cephalothorax and pereiopods, but also on the abdomen and other appendices. Although some were already reproducing, most barnacles had been recruited recently or were still sexually immature; this suggests recent host arrival in that estuarine environment. Despite the fact that other barnacles occur in this region, A. improvisus is the only species reported as an epibiont on Macrobrachium acanthurus; this was also the first record of epibiosis on this host . The occurrence of innumerable specimens in the pereiopods' articulations and the almost complete covering of the carapace of some prawns (which also increased their weight) suggest that A. improvisus is adapted to fixate this kind of biogenic substrate and that the relationship between the two species biologically damages the basibiont.
