An Overview of International Law Firms' Lateral Hires in China AN OVERVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL LAW FIRMS’ LATERAL HIRES IN CHINA (2019) WHICH FIRMS WERE HIRING AND WHAT PRACTICE AREAS WERE STRONG Private Practice | In-House ssq.com INTRODUCTION 2019 was another year of challenges for the China legal market. We saw continued uncertainty but there were moments of optimism, as law firms continued to hire partners and associates and more international firms started to take advantage of the latest development on law firm regulations and set up various Chinese alliances. Here, our China consultants Shawn Chen, Levana Huang, Betty Chen, Nicole Xu and our China researchers’ team have collected and analysed data on the partner and experienced associate hires made by the China offices of major international and Chinese law firms over the last year and put together our annual review and analysis of legal recruitment trends. PARTNERS & TEAMS How many partners were hired? Partners hired by year and location SSQ has been tracking partner moves in China for years. According to NUMBER OF YEAR BEIJING SHANGHAI our research, in the past four years (2016-2019 inclusive), a total of 89 PARTNER HIRES partners were hired by 37 major international (US/UK headquartered) law firms in Beijing and Shanghai. 2019 14 7 7 Lateral partner hire activity dropped by 40% in 2019 compared to 2018 23 15 8 2018. The decline had begun in 2018 but accelerated in 2019. This 2017 28 14 14 suggests the nervousness among international law firms on making 2016 24 10 14 heavy investment into China has become even more prominent, and highlights the increasing challenges these firms’ China businesses are facing. In contrast, our latest research shows the handful of ‘Red Circle’ Chinese law firms hired roughly around 30 new partners in Beijing and Shanghai in 2019 – mostly from their peer or lower-ranked PRC firms and only a few from international law firms. Chinese law firms continue to grow revenue and expand teams although the pace may not be as quick as before. ssq.com Who hired these partners? HERBERT SMITH FREEHILLS BECOMES FOUNDING SIGNATORY TO THE CHARTER FOR BLACK TALENT IN FINANCE AND THE PROFESSIONS 30 October 2020 | UK Firm news Herbert Smith Freehills has been announced as one of the founding signatories to a first-of-its-kind initiative, developed to increase representation of Black people in senior positions across legal and other professional services companies in the UK. Created by barrister Harry Matovu QC, the Charter commits firms to creating and maintaining an environment where Black talent can be identified, developed and promoted for the benefit of individuals and their organisation. It also commits signatories to support the recruitment of Black employees and their development and progression into senior roles by focusing on the entire executive pipeline. Commenting on Herbert Smith Freehills’ commitment to the Charter, Alison Brown, executive partner, says: "This has been an extraordinary year and one which it has become abundantly clear that action needs to be taken to redress the imbalances that have been allowed to persist in so many business environments. No marketplace can succeed in the long term if it fails to reflect the communities which it serves and the legal sector is no exception. Earlier this year we outlined ten actions for change to highlight our commitment to create a safe, supportive and respectful environment across the firm and the profession. We are proud to be one of the founding signatories of this Charter and are determined to ensure opportunities to attract and retain talent from Black and minority ethnic groups build an environment where everyone feels valued." The Charter outlines eight pledges that signatories to it will adhere to.

  • Trustlaw Index of Pro Bono 2016
TRUSTLAW INDEX OF PRO BONO 2016 SPREADING THE PRACTICE OF PRO BONO WORLDWIDE TO DRIVE SOCIAL CHANGE TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono - Regional Analysis Europe The analysis in this section relates to Europe excluding England and Wales. The 2016 Index data shows that pro bono engagement is strong across Europe among both partners and fee earners. Thirty nine law firms with offices in 27 countries across Europe submitted data on their pro bono practices for the 2016 Index, a significant increase from the 31 firms that submitted in 2015. Data for nearly all key indicators suggested growth in individual lawyers’ commitment to pro bono, expansion of the practice across previously unreached jurisdictions and an increasing number of law firms using pro bono as a tool to engage and retain lawyers. While there was a 30 percent increase in the total number of pro bono hours carried out by firms with offices in Europe last year, the average annual pro bono hours carried out by fee earners dropped nominally from 15.9 hours to 15.2 hours. However, findings in both of these years show an appreciable increase from the first year of the Index, when fee earners in European offices did an average of 12.3 hours of pro bono each. Such comparisons suggest a net increase in pro bono contributions since the Index began. In addition, the percentage of fee earners who reported doing 10 or more hours of pro bono work increased in the last year, from 25.1 percent to 26.0 percent. Partner engagement in Europe increased over the last year with partners’ average annual pro bono hours increasing slightly from 10.0 to 10.8 hours and 42.5 percent of partners in European firms contributing some time to pro bono initiatives (representing a 30 percent increase from the 2015 Index).

  • Glimmer of Hope in a Difficult Time: Victoria Mataczynski
GLIMMER OF HOPE IN A DIFFICULT TIME: VICTORIA MATACZYNSKI 08 September 2020 | Alumni Profile It sounds like a miracle product: eco-friendly, biodegradable in seawater, fluid-repellent, strong, adaptable, sterilisable, reuseable and customisable into different applications. No wonder that this material – called BioHastalex and derived from graphene – could serve many purposes as a revolutionary replacement for plastic in future. One we should all be looking out for. Victoria Mataczynski, an Australian lawyer and alumna of Herbert Smith Freehills, is a co- founder of Nanoloom, the company formed to manufacture BioHastalex. She is currently leading the company’s drive to obtain funding to enable it to start manufacturing at scale. She explains how the company came about: “BioHastalex was developed by a company called NanoRegMed and developed by Professor Alex Seifalian, a materials scientist, someone who I had met in London. “As everybody else, I was amazed by his invention and wondered why it was not being mass- produced. Alex told me of the difficulties of commercialising such a scientific product. With my background in law and head for business, I thought this was an amazing opportunity. Hence, we started Nanoloom. For us, BioHastalex is the way to go, and we can help to reduce the amount of plastic finishing up in our oceans. We are capitalising on a tide of consumer and regulatory sentiment.” Victoria has been promoting the product far and wide and received huge interest, but ultimately the commercial applications depend on seeing the product being used. “It is what people, in a material science context, call the ‘valley of death’,” Victoria continues, “the gap between the time when the innovation is created and being able to commercialise it.” That said, the opportunity is huge – for example, a number of car manufacturers have indicated that they could use BioHastalex to make car seats (a “game changer”, one said, if Nanoloom can pass the tests, which it is confident it can do).
