He donated a major portion of it to the Oviatt Library in 2007 and 2008. This portion numbers well over 800 items including books, music scores, and ephemera. It is in the library’s online catalog under the name The Gilbert and Sullivan Collection. William Gilbert, the librettist, was born in 1836 and Arthur Sullivan, the composer, was born in 1842. The first and last of their fourteen collaborative efforts are: Thespis opening in December 1871 and The Grand Duke opening in March 1896. The other twelve are: Trial by Jury, The Sorcerer, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, Iolanthe, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, The Yeomen of the Guard, The Gondoliers, Utopia Limited. Mr. Trutt donated a display case to the Library to house a permanent display of his collection of Gilbert and Sullivan opera related ceramic figurines. The display case contains an extensive display of figurines. The items range from the early 1890’s through the twentieth century and up to the present day. Items are added as they are acquired. The oldest items are the early American pressed glass celery vases with scenes from the 1878 HMS Pinafore. Nearly as old is a blue Royal Doulton bud vase dated at the mid 1890’s. The scene is of Haddon Hall, an ancient castellated manor house in northern England. During his estrangement from Gilbert, Sullivan collaborated with a new librettist to produce the 1892 operetta Haddon Hall. Richard D’Oyly Carte presented Haddon Hall in his Savoy Theatre, the longtime home to the Gilbert & Sullivan operas. The elopement of Dorothy Vernon and John Manners from Haddon Hall in 1563 forms one of the great love stories brought to life in nineteenth century England by numerous books, poems, and finally in Sullivan’s operetta. Finally, the rare Parian Bust of Sir Arthur Sullivan is of the same period as the vases. The small version of the well-known Royal Doulton Jack Point is shown to the right of the top shelf. It is the most recent item, being produced in 2010. Three versions of the original large size Jack Point are shown at the center and either end of the top shelf. Royal Doulton items are sprinkled throughout the collection and represent the “collaboration” between England’s most famous opera duo and England’s most famous Pottery. Also of note are the series of Gilbert & Sullivan characters produced by the English company, Shorter and Sons, in the 1960’s. They were made in two sizes: shown on the second shelf are all fourteen of the smaller size of the series. On the bottom shelf are five of the larger size. The 1996 set of three former D’Oyly Carte actors was commissioned by the director of the newly established Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. The Gilbert & Sullivan Festival is now held yearly in England over a three week period in August. The famous Wedgwood Mug shows a scene from each opera. Of special interest are the Halcyon Days Enamel boxes. Called “The Revival of an English 18th Century Craft,” this recently conceived English company, has demonstrated an interest in relating to the uniquely English Gilbert & Sullivan duo. Also of special interest is the Yeomen of the Guard jug on the fourth shelf. This one of a kind item was created by a Gilbert & Sullivan amateur performer and master craftsman of the Maling ceramics company. On the following pages are shelf by shelf maps to locate and specify the various characters and other items associated with the Gilbert & Sullivan operas. THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER Faculty of Arts ‘Respectable Capers’ – Class, Respectability and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company 1877-1909 Michael Stephen Goron Doctor of Philosophy June 2014 The Thesis has been completed as a requirement for a postgraduate research Degree of the University of Winchester The word count is: 98,856 (including abstract and declarations.) THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER ABSTRACT FOR THESIS ‘Respectable Capers’: Class, Respectability and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company 1877-1909 Michael Stephen Goron This thesis will demonstrate ways in which late Victorian social and cultural attitudes influenced the development and work of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, and the early professional production and performance of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The underlying enquiry concerns the extent to which the D’Oyly Carte Opera organisation and its work relate to an ideology, or collective mentalité, maintained and advocated by the Victorian middle- classes. The thesis will argue that a need to reflect bourgeois notions of respectability, status and gender influenced the practices of a theatrical organisation whose success depended on making large-scale musical theatre palatable to ‘respectable’ Victorians. It will examine ways in which managerial regulation of employees was imposed to contribute to both a brand image and a commercial product which matched the ethical values and tastes of the target audience. The establishment of a company performance style will be shown to have evolved from behavioural practices derived from the absorption and representation of shared cultural outlooks. The working lives and professional preoccupations of authors, managers and performers will be investigated to demonstrate how the attitudes and working lives of Savoy personnel exemplified concerns typical to many West End theatre practitioners of the period, such as the drive towards social acceptability and the recognition of theatre work as a valid professional pursuit, particularly for women.

Director’s Note There is no theatrical phenomenon in the Antipodes The G&S operetta’s durability is extraordinary but with the staying power of Gilbert and Sullivan. not unexplainable. After all, Gilbert’s dramatic situations are still funny, and Sullivan’s music Our love affair with G&S (and let’s face it, how succeeds in providing a kind of romantic foil to many creators are instantly recognised by their Gilbert’s pervasive drollery and cynicism. This kind initials alone?) is almost as enduring as the works of friction was very much at the heart of Gilbert themselves. In the 1870s, when policing copyright and Sullivan’s creative relationship and the gentle was much trickier than it is now, two rival “pirate” satire alternating with genuine heartfelt emotion is productions of H.M.S. Pinafore were playing across a combination that never ages – indeed, perhaps it’s the street from one another in Melbourne.

THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN OPERETTAS ON 78s: COMPLETE SETS AND ABRIDGEMENTS, 1906. 1950 John W. N. Francis In 1877 Richard D'Oyly Carte commissioned Gilbert and Sullivan to write The Sorcerer, and organized an ensemble of singer-actors to perform the new piece under the author's artistic direction. Also in 1877, of course, Charles Cros and Thomas Edison invented sound recording. More than a century later both the music and the medium continue to flourish, and indeed they have come together often and success fully--notably in the many complete versions by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which have set standards of style and ensemble for generations of devotees and amateur performers. This discography documents the complete recordings of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas made at 78 rpm, not only by the D'Oyly Carte company or under its aegis, but also by others with lesser claims to authenticity. Also included are substantial abridgements and sets of excerpts--groups of five or more sides made at essentially the same time and place and with the same performers, whether or not they were ever issued collectively or with consecutive numbering. The following comments set the recordings in the context of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company's history. THE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS When Richard D'Oyly Carte died in 1901, his widow Helen assumed manage ment of the businesses he had built, including the Savoy Theatre in London and the opera company, which was then on tour. In 1906 she brought the troupe back to the Savoy for a repertory season of Gilbert and Sullivan, its very first.

  • GILBERT and SULLIVAN: Part 1
GILBERT AND SULLIVAN: Part 1 GILBERT AND SULLIVAN Part 1: The Correspondence, Diaries, Literary Manuscripts and Prompt Copies of W. S. Gilbert (1836-1911) from the British Library, London Contents listing PUBLISHER'S NOTE CONTENTS OF REELS CHRONOLOGY 1836-1911 DETAILED LISTING GILBERT AND SULLIVAN: Part 1 Publisher's Note "The world will be a long while forgetting Gilbert and Sullivan. Every Spring their great works will be revived. … They made enormous contributions to the pleasure of the race. They left the world merrier than they found it. They were men whose lives were rich with honest striving and high achievement and useful service." H L Mencken Baltimore Evening Sun, 30 May 1911 If you want to understand Victorian culture and society, then the Gilbert and Sullivan operas are an obvious starting point. They simultaneously epitomised and lampooned the spirit of the age. Their productions were massively successful in their own day, filling theatres all over Britain. They were also a major Victorian cultural export. A new show in New York raised a frenzy at the box office and Harper's New Monthly Magazine (Feb 1886) stated that the "two men have the power of attracting thousands and thousands of people daily for months to be entertained”. H L Mencken's comments of 1911 have proved true. Gilbert & Sullivan societies thrive all over the world and new productions continue to spring up in the West End and on Broadway, in Buxton and Harrogate, in Cape Town and Sydney, in Tokyo and Hong Kong, in Ottawa and Philadelphia. Some of the topical references may now be lost, but the basis of the stories in universal myths and the attack of broad targets such as class, bureaucracy, the legal system, horror and the abuse of power are as relevant today as they ever were.
