With the decade coming to a close a few weeks ago, the editorial staff decided that we should fl ashback to the ideas and moments that shaped the decade. As we adjust to life in the new “roaring twenties,” here is a breakdown of the most prominent events of each year from the past decade. 2010: On January 12, an earthquake registering a magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Haiti, causing about 250,000 deaths and 300,000 injuries. On March 23, the Aff ordable Care Act is signed into law by Barack Obama. Commonly referred to as “Obamacare,” it was considered one of the most extensive health care reform acts since Medicare, which was passed in 1965. On April 20, a Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded over the Gulf of Mexico. Killing eleven people, it is considered one of the worst oil spills in history and the largest in US waters. On July 25, Wikileaks, an organization that allows people to anonymously leak classifi ed information, released more than 90,000 documents related to the Afghanistan War. It is oft en referred to as the largest leak of classifi ed information since the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War. Th e New Orleans Saints won their fi rst Super Bowl since Hurricane Katrina, LeBron James made his way to Miami, Kobe Bryant won his fi nal title, and Butler went on a Cinderella run to the NCAA Championship. Th e year fi ttingly set the tone for a decade of player empowerment and underdog victories.

Not only did the company present more than 200 exiting performances, but we also welcomed Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the Met’s new Jeanette Lerman- Neubauer Music Director. Maestro Nézet-Séguin is only the third conductor to hold the title of Music Director since the company’s founding in 1883. I am also happy to report that the 2018–19 season marked the fifth year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so, as we recorded a very small deficit of less than 1% of expenses. The season opened with the premiere of a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s epic Samson et Dalila and also included three other new productions, as well as three exhilarating full cycles of Wagner’s Ring and a full slate of 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 13th season, with ten broadcasts reaching more than two million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (box office, media, and presentations) totaled $121 million. As in past seasons, total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. The new productions in the 2018–19 season were the work of three distinguished directors, two having had previous successes at the Met and one making his company debut.

    FACTFILE: GCSE DRAMA Components 1 & 2 Lighting for the Devised Performance Lighting for the Devised Performance: Component 1 During the process of creating, developing and realising your lighting design for the devised performance you should compile a file of evidence which can be used in your presentation to accompany the final lighting design. This document indicates the type of evidence which you should include and supporting appendix to use. Learning Outcomes Design students should be able to create ideas by researching the following: (1) the pre-release material; (2) the professional practice of lighting design; (3) the materials and resources used in development of their lighting design; (4) a range of genres, design styles and practitioners. (1) The Pre-Release Material As a lighting design student, you will work with a group of between 2 and 6 to choose one stimulus from a choice of 3 for the development of your devised performance. After research of the stimulus you will begin to work on the development of lighting ideas for the devised performance. It may take a few weeks for your group to come up with their performance ideas so you must be patient with them. You will be able to contribute to this discussion from your own research to ensure that the devised piece will give you enough scope for the creation of your lighting plot. Familiarise yourself with the lighting equipment, resources and technology within your schools Drama Department. During the preliminary devising period, you should research the professional practice of lighting design. (2) Professional Practice of Lighting Design Lighting is a vital part of any theatrical production and it is sometimes overlooked by students both when they visit the theatre and when they are preparing their own work.
