CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

It’s indeed a privilege for me to witness the 65th Convocation ceremony as the Chairman of the Governing Board of XLRI. XLRI was established in 1949, soon after gained Independence, and for over seven decades has consistently striven to uphold its mission – to help shape business leaders who are competent yet upholding high personal values and societal concern. The industrial township of Jamshedpur is indeed fortunate to have such a progressive management school that of f ers much more than management-centric education programs. XLRI has always placed high importance on its students adopting ethical conduct, cultivating a values-driven culture, and shaping an integral character formation of its students. To the Class of 2021: It is rare that we come across multiple large challenges in a short period - a life-threatening pandemic, climate weirding as a consequence of climate change and economic downturn. As aspiring business leaders of tomorrow, these unprecedented challenges of f er valuable learnings as we have all suddenly moved into a scenario where the managerial acronym VUCA (short for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) has acquired totally dif f erent meanings. This new VUCA world challenges you to build your resilience quotient, take care of your own health and those of your loved ones and friends and also beckons you to support to the extent possible all the marginalized people who live life on a day-to-day basis. In these trying times I wish each of you all the very best in all your future endeavors and urge you to remember “these times shall also pass,” and we shall overcome these challenges as a business school, as a nation, and as a global family.

CONVOCATION SPEAKER & RECIPIENT OF THE SIR JEHANGIR GHANDY MEDAL

Mr. Sandeep Kataria is a business and marketing leader with over 25 years of experience in the consumer products and retail industry across different geographies in developed and developing markets. In December 2020 Sandeep has been appointed CEO of the Bata Shoe Organization. Sandeep joined Bata in 2017, as the CEO of Bata India Ltd. with the main task of transforming the footwear giant into a modern and contemporary brand for generations to come. During his tenure, Bata India has seen a significant upswing in brand equity, sales and profits. Sandeep's strategy to force reappraisal of the Iconic Brand with new look stores, contemporary new designs and cut-through insight driven advertising has being positively noticed by consumers across the country. Prior to taking over the charge at Bata India Ltd, Sandeep was the Chief Commercial Officer at Vodafone, leading the Marketing and Services function for the telecom giant in India and responsible for some of the most iconic marketing campaigns in India. Before Vodafone, he held CMO and General Manager roles at Yum! Brands (the owners of KFC, Pizza Hut & Taco Bell) in India and the UK. He was involved in the rapid growth of KFC & PH as well as the launch of Taco Bell in India! He joined Hindustan Unilever from XLRI and worked there for almost 2 decades in several marketing & strategy roles across India and at the global headquarters at the UK. Sandeep is an engineer from IIT-Delhi and finished his PGDBM from XLRI in 1993 as the gold medalist of the batch. While IIT gave him the analytical skills, he believes XLRI was responsible for sparking the interest in Leadership & Marketing making him a life-long student of consumer behavior and insight! Sandeep is married to Anuranjita Kumar, another alumni of XLRI from the 1994 batch who runs a startup Women In Technology (WIT.in) focusing on diversity & inclusion. Prior to that she spent over 2 decades as head of HR with Citibank & RBS. They have 2 children – daughter Avni who studies Politics & Economics at University of Pennsylvania and son Siddharth who studies at British School Delhi.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

This year the international exchange programmes were impacted due to the pandemic. While none of our postgraduate students or faculty could go on exchange to the partner universities, six postgraduate students (2 from Aston and 4 from NEOMA) attended online classes with our students.

The first student who went to Macquarie University as part of the dual doctoral programme completed his curriculum at Macquarie and returned to XLRI.

The institute is planning to offer joint degree programmes in Health Care Management, Analytics and Sports Management. The institute is also looking at a possibility of offering international certificate programmes for students who are undergoing their postgraduate programme. Here the institute is looking at having a tie up with partner institutes so that the students can spend a semester or a year in an international university to earn a certificate in a particular discipline. As in the case of student exchange the credits earned in the partner university will be credited to their postgraduate programme. So a student would earn an additional certificate along with their postgraduate diploma. Like the student exchange this will be a two way arrangement.

In addition, the institute is having a discussion with Deakin University to jointly offer a programme for the Indian Defence personnel as part of their Resettlement Programme for serving and retired officers under the Ministry of Defence.

XLRI signed the multilateral mobility agreement for students, faculty and staff with the Jesuit Higher Education Network (MAGIS EXCHANGE). Currently there are 29 participating universities. In this connection, the International Education of Jesuit Higher Education Institutions is organizing a meeting in Seville, Spain, from 23 to 25 March 2021 to work out the modalities.

CRUX

CRUX- Consulting and Research Undertaking at XLRI had a stellar year in 2020-21, navigating through two placement seasons and hosting many events throughout the three terms. This year, we have grown to include students from the Delhi- NCR campus. Apart from supporting both the junior and the senior batches during their SIPs and Final Placements, respectively, CRUX also unveiled its casebook for the year 2020-21, complete with our students' case interview experiences, detailed case analysis, frameworks, and industry reports. Considering the recent trends of consult companies' interview experiences, CRUX launched the HR Casebook this year to help students with their preparation. The HR Casebook gives a snapshot of the variety of HR cases asked in interviews like downsizing, digital transformation strategies, etc. The detailed casebooks will be a huge help for future interview preparation. CONSquad, first event organised by CRUX tested the basic problem-solving skills and consulting knowledge of the junior batch. The event consisted of two rounds - a short quiz and a case study round. For the initial years, the committee social media. primarily focused on industry and stock research spanning across sectors without managing any actual investments. The team started with just three investors in 2017 with the investor base reaching 120+ in 2020. The academic year 2020-21 saw the fund reach several key milestones. Post the selection of junior SIF team, the fund was opened to the students for making investments in the end of September 2020. The Assets Under Management (AUM) which were 7.11 lakh at the end of 2019 fund raising grew to 11.35 lakh by the end of 2020 fund raising. The team swiftly set about to invest the corpus and put in countless hours to invest nearly 3.5 lakhs in over 15 new stocks. With the rally witnessed by the market in recent months, the fund generated returns of over 27% in the three months ending Jan 2021 and the current AUM stands at 14+ lakh. To enhance transparency and provide a more seamless flow of information to the investors, the team prepared a google spreadsheet where the investors could monitor the SIF portfolio in real-time and keep track of all the trades undertaken by the team. Apart from the management of the fund, the team also conducted finance knowledge sessions for the junior batch before the SIPs to help them for the finance roles that come to the campus. These sessions covered fundamentals of finance, accounting and valuation.
