  • C.A.S.E. Gala 2021 Guest Speaker Jimmy Wayne
C.A.S.E. Gala 2021 Guest Speaker Jimmy Wayne The Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.TM) is thrilled to welcome country music star and life-long advocate for youth in foster care Jimmy Wayne as our special guest at our Masquerade Gala & Silent Auction on Saturday, October 30, 2021. Jimmy Wayne is a New York Times bestselling author, presenter and former foster youth dedicated to creating a positive change in the lives of children in foster care who need permanent families. Many of his award-winning songs including Stay Gone, Paper Angels, I Love You This Much and Do You Believe Me Now, which earned BMI’s prestigious Million- Air Award, spotlight his mission of raising awareness for youth in foster care. Jimmy has spent his career advocating for children in foster care, sharing his own experience as a homeless youth who was welcomed with open arms into the home of Bea and Russell Costner, 75 and 79 years old respectively, when he was 16 years old. Living with the Costners allowed him to attend school and eventually write and perform music. Jimmy’s three-time New York Times bestselling memoir Walk to Beautiful: The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found the Way has become a valuable resource for foster and respite foster parents. His children’s book Ruby the Foster Dog, inspired by a puppy he rescued while on his walk halfway across America, explores the challenges of foster care in a way that is both heartwarming and relatable for all ages.

  • Venturing in the Slipstream
VENTURING IN THE SLIPSTREAM THE PLACES OF VAN MORRISON’S SONGWRITING Geoff Munns BA, MLitt, MEd (hons), PhD (University of New England) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Western Sydney University, October 2019. Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution. .............................................................. Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts.

PRESENTS THE 12th Annual Scholarship Luncheon BENEFITING ORANGEWOOD FOUNDATION Friday, June 10, 2016 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Featuring Former foster youth turned county singer/songwriter & New York Times best-selling author JIMMY WAYNE 12th Annual Scholarship Luncheon Guest Speaker – Jimmy Wayne Jimmy Wayne is a former foster child turned country music singer/songwriter whose songs and story highlight his mission to bring awareness to the youth who age out of the foster system and become homeless. With hits such as "Put Your Hand In Mine," "I Love You This Much," and "Paper Angels," he released "Do You Believe Me Now," his biggest hit to date for which he earned the Millionaire Award for having one million radio spins in America. In 2009, Jimmy toured with Brad Paisley and recorded "Sara Smile" with Daryl Hall and John Oates. In 2010, Jimmy walked halfway across America to raise awareness for youth aging out of the system. The next year, he became CASA’s national spokesperson and released the novel Paper Angels which became a made-for- TV movie with the same title. In 2012, Jimmy helped get the bill extending the age of foster care to 21 passed in both California and Tennessee. Jimmy lives in Nashville and continues to raise awareness for youth by writing, singing, and speaking. “Drawing on his own troubled childhood, the songs address abusive relationships, revenge, missing children, the bad influence of negative people, and uncaring fathers, but every vignette resolves on a positive note. And there are straight-ahead love songs, too; "Tresspassin' " is a flat-out stomper celebrating the thrill of summer love.
